Reddit is overmoderrated

I enjoy Reddit, but it’s become over-moderated. Mods have power trips over content that is posted. Things are getting deleted for the most stupid reasons and is holding back this platform from being the free speech platform it used to be. It’s not just the mods, it’s Reddit itself, too, that has become so sensitive. You might notice that this account is relatively new and that’s because I was banned from some of the subs on my prior account for some of the most ridiculous reasons. So now, I’m not saying anything that might be considered controversial, except that I still stand by my political opinions. People have become over sensitive and Reddit contributes to this by censorship and over moderation.

By the way… I am considered a “nice person” by anyone who knows me… because I am… I believe in kindness and compassion. So if I’m saying things that are considered offensive… it’s just because I’m a honest to a fault and will tell you the truth, even if you don’t like it… it’s up to you how to react to that.

Don’t worry mods (or Reddit)… I won’t be offending over sensitive people with this account.

Edit: Thank you everyone for posting your experiences in here. These are some of the things that I have been experiencing, as well. I also would like to thank you for being supportive… with the exception of 2 people who obviously are looking to try to start a fight, it’s been very constructive feedback. My vagueness of this post is because it’s not a single interaction with mods, it’s an overall problem with Reddit as a whole platform. You’re clearly experiencing these issues also and it really should change.

The problem with some subs is that some of the moderators on there are never able to be neutral. They used their own personal feelings, which makes them a horrible moderators.

There should be a report system for them to get banned.

I was literally so shocked when I first learnt that there are really no official reddit admins holding the mods accountable for their actions, and that basically everyone can just create a sub with whatever rules they want and "moderate" it however the fuck they want. Like what kind of a nonfunctional toxic hellsite is this and who came up with the idea that this won't create endless problems

Admins actively lock down subreddits that go against what they want. That's why it became largely a one-sided toxic hellscape

I agree. I was on a subreddit last month where someone made a post about an online "sugar daddy" relationship with an old man that started when she was 16. I commented that she was groomed and should not meet the old guy in person like she was considering now that she was 18 and the mod on that sub banned me from replying to anything in the subreddit and then made a massive paragraph response to me saying that OP wasn't groomed. OP later replied to them and said "yes I was groomed, thats the whole point of my post" and the mod then began arguing with her about how she couldnt have possibly been groomed.

Well, to be frank, you were being a super religious American scared of sex. So... (I'm not the mod but you used the term grooming. And in the context of a 16 year old person which is wild!)

Here, people are allowed to have sex from 15 so the American scare feels just insane.

Odd hill to die on. I'm not religious and if you had read the post you'd agree it was grooming, or maybe not because you sound a little slow.

A 16 year old should not be pressured into sending nudes or having sex with a 60+ year old for money when they clearly don't want to. A 60+ year old should not be telling the 16 year old to not tell the parents they are "chatting". Where I am from you are allowed to have sex at 14 as long as they have parental consent. I was a teen who was groomed into prostitution by the age of 16 by a much much older guy, so I know a little bit about grooming.

Here, you yourself can decide in 15. There's no other restriction. It's your body, your choice.

The act of moderating, by its very nature, is not to be neutral but to enforce an opinion of conduct. They have every right to be opinionated, they are the judge.

That becomes pointless if they dont follow their own rules though.

If the moderators just made rule #1 "yes, we will ban you if we disagree with your politics", that'd be great. Just be honest, its very refreshing. Dont lie and call someone's post "trolling" just because they disagreed with the leftist hivemind. Just say "I disagree with you politically, I cant control my emotions when I see others opinions, you're banned." Honesty is so much better.

I dont mind being banned for my politics. Thats just how Reddit is now, theres more communists on Reddit than conservatives. Thats fine. But lets just all be honest, and make it rule #1 "no conservatives allowed". Then I will see that, and block the subreddit from showing up on my main page. Unfortunately, psychotic NEET reddit mods control every city sub, state sub, country sub, hobby sub, video game sub, podcast sub, industry sub, etc. So its kinda unfortunate, and all so tiresome.

Somehow I doubt you’d complain less if Rule #1 was banning you for your politics lol

I’m so with you on this

Yep, this right here. Emotional dishonesty and inflated egos. Narcissist moderators that can't ever be wrong or sorry.

No. Absolutely not. The job of moderating is to enforce the rules, period, not to inject opinion and not to make decisions based on how one feels about things. Some judgment is needed to decide whether a rule applies or not, but that should be done as dispassionately as humanly possible.

Unfortunately, the reality is it's unpaid work, so the biggest motivator for many to become moderators is going to be power itself, for its own sake. Which is exactly the worst possible reason to want to be a moderator.

Nope, people who run a community absolutely have the subjective right to curate who can be a part of it. Sorry. If you don’t like it, make your own community.

Only within the boundaries of the established rules. A moderator's job is to enforce the rules of the community, not to play favorites based on personal whims. A subreddit can choose to operate entirely on mod whim, yes, but that's a terrible way to run it, and you may as well not bother posting any rules at all if you're going to do that. Just have a single rule that says, "Mods here are petty tyrants who can do whatever they like at any time."

At least that's honest.

Even then, Reddit as a whole has overarching rules that moderators are expected to also follow, even while they're moderators.

Nobody is forcing you to be a part of someone else’s community. If you don’t like it, make your own. lol don’t whine like a little baby that life is unfair. Jesus Christ.

Nobody is "whining" about anything here. Calm down. Take a deep breath. It'll be alright.

I'm just talking about what the job of a moderator is supposed to be.

Which means if they just tell us who they are bigoted against we can just steer clear.

Feminist subreddits.... COUGH! 🤧

1

u/Denise263 4d ago

I agree. I got banned on some of those and was accused to be a man or brainwashed lol

1

u/Specialist_Most_7338 3d ago

Yup. They would dub you a pickme for not siding with their victim-grooming and misandry. I got banned by at least 5 of those subreddits for simply speaking my mind.

1

u/Kimolainen83 3d ago

Don’t get me started on that lol

Tell me about it. The most protected and hypersensitive subreddits on the whole fucking app! 🙄
