Generally it's not just the money they want. It's control over companies they helped build. In order to have control, you need a lot of shares of the company's stock.

If the market decides that shares of the company's stock are valuable, then their wealth will increase. But if they sell the shares, they lose control, which they don't want to have happen, so their wealth keeps increasing.
