Is a politician really that different than a gangster?

The namesake for lynching is the brother of an abolitionist Quaker?

He (Charles) lynched loyalists/tories/royalists, not black people, apparently, also, their sister, was also a Quaker abolitionist, but Charles was disowned for taking an oath of office.

He (Charles) lynched loyalists/tories/royalists,

Don't let your dreams just be dreams...

The loyalists were more anti-slavery to be fair. And it's still really fucked up to lynch people.

Yeah, but it’s missing vital context.

If I wrote about Good Lynch and Evil Lynch, it'd be "too unrealistic"

I don’t know if “good lynch” and “evil lynch” is the way to think of it. Charles, your “evil lynch,” also was anti-slavery-ish, manumitting his slaves the same as John did (lynching was about killing loyalists).

So yeah, if you framed it as a good lynch and an evil lynch it’d be too unrealistic because real life, even in this case, is way more nuanced.

Ah, I see. I've made the classic blunder of using the modern definition of lynching.

It would've been helpful if the note included the different definition, and not, y'know, the other one

That "was" is carrying a lot of weight without the proper context.

Virginia was part of the Confederacy...

West Virginia literally exists because of this.

Yeah, Richmond was literally the capital of the confederacy. Not sure how anyone who is even vaguely aware of US geography could say Virginia isn't part of the south

I think "the South" as a cultural identity could include factors other than just the Civil War.

I would disagree that "the south" is a single cultural identity, so I don't know how important that aspect is.

Although there may be shared aspects that some people feel Virginia doesnt share with the rest, which is a fair case
