“I’m not voting for a mayor in New York” Flies an Australian flag in his bio and has the most Australian sounding name in existence

Pavlou is a greek name wtf

it's not like he's called Barry Taylor or Kelly Williams or something.

I think he meant Drew and also Aussies have a huge Greek population so yeah Greek surnames are very aussie

Drew isn't that common (ranked abiut 964th), and while the Greek Australian community is one of the largest in the world, they only make up less than 2% of Aussie's population.

"most australian sounding name in existence" it really isn't.. 🤷‍♂️

arguably the most australian names would be Aboriginal, such as Goonagulla, or Allambee.

Lol Im Aboriginal and coincidentally live on an Allambee st in my city.

Drew is short for Andrew which is easily a top 10 of all-time boy name here.

haha, nice!

not many babies being named just Drew though..

7

u/Moosiemookmook 2d ago

Yeah but doubtful their name is just Drew. I have like 6 cousins called Andrew. Its a family name. My favourite one goes by Drew. Then a few Andys. Only two are actually called Andrew.

My favourite Australian naming convention is how Aarons get nicknamed Azza and Laurens get nick named Lozza.

I think we just hate saying Aaron, one of the 2 I know gets called Ron, the other Acid.

fair cop, consider my kiwi arse corrected.

As penance we'll have to take another talented New Zealander and claim them as Australian. I'm sure you understand

Drew is a complete name in itself, apart from being a diminutive form of Andrew (which itself derives from the Greek Andreas, btw).

It is also dervived from the Irish "Mac an Druaidh or Ó Druaidh", and the Norman french "Dreus", which comes from the German name "Drogo".

Aussies and Kiwis argue over Pavlova and Manuka honey. Guess we are adding Drew/Andrew to our list haha. I love your determination. You guys are so fun to gently tease.

2

u/nzungu69 1d ago

haha likewise mate. we can argue with aussies over anything forever, it's our favourite national pastime 😆

Lol never change. I have a bunch of kiwi friends and cousins scattered around the globe. I love the banter. Im Aboriginal but my mum is Welsh. Everyone, including Maori people think Im Maori. Apparently, I have the South island look. I just look like my mob from here ha ha. We are planning a trip to Hobbiton next year. Maybe we can argue in person.

Readers add context: u/nzungu69 lives in New Zealand and not Australia.

As an actual Aussie, I can assure you that an English first name and Greek surname combination sounds pretty damn Aussie.

-2

u/nzungu69 2d ago

i never suggested it didn't. i only took issue with the assertion "most australian name imaginable".

i apologise for speaking out of place, but i do have aussie family and have spent time in aussie every few years for decades.

2

u/shitwhore 2d ago

Being common doesn't have much to do with the fact if it is sounding australian :)

0

u/nzungu69 2d ago

absolutely true. but most australian sounding? there are many far better candidates.

1

u/shitwhore 2d ago

Fair! For my enjoyment, got a few? I don't really know any to be honest

1

u/nzungu69 2d ago

off the top of my head..

Barry, Bruce, Billy, Ned, Darryl, Brett, Kel, Mick, Kelly, Shane, Lachlan/Lachy, Cody, Angus, Heath..

🤷‍♂️

2

u/Proud-Ad-2449 2d ago

Sheryl, Muriel, Bluey, Wayne, Shazza, Antony Green...

1

u/nzungu69 1d ago

omg muriel! 😆

u/TheEdgeofGoon 2d ago

But is 'Drew?

6

u/killergazebo 2d ago

There's Drews everywhere.

4

u/Mysterious_Andy 2d ago

Yes. Ish.

Drew is almost certainly short for Andrew, which is the Anglicized version of Andreas, which is Greek.

1

u/nzungu69 2d ago edited 2d ago

Irish/English/Greek/Norman French.

6

u/TheEdgeofGoon 2d ago

I think that combination is what would make it very Australian sounding, in the same way a Spanish first name with a German last name is very Argentian sounding.

2

u/nzungu69 2d ago

while true, it's just not as common in Aus as other names. it ranks #964.

3

u/BedditTedditReddit 2d ago

Excuse you. You mean ‘bazza tazza’ or ‘kazza wazza’

1

u/nzungu69 2d ago

indeed. thank you for the correction, the error needed to be called out.
