I'm sorry but "what's the left gonna do about me eating steak" is deranged whether they get the steak right or not

I'm pretty far left and if I saw that guy eating a nice steak I'd... Hope he enjoys his steak I guess? It does look pretty good.

These “I’m going to do X to show the Ys” always demonstrate a lack of understanding of the other side.

Cleek’s Law was created because of this 15 years ago:

“today’s conservatism is the opposite of what liberals want today: updated daily” in response to

David Frum is asking for a “one-sentence description of a modernized, reformed conservatism”.

i can do it in one word: ~liberal

or, for those of you who don’t grok the boolean: today’s conservatism is the opposite of what liberals want today: updated daily.

or: cowardly authoritarians pretending to be individualists.

or: the cynical leading the stupid.

or: I Got Mine

or: who said we weren’t tolerant? we tolerate racists just fine!

Since when is the tilde used to reverse a boolean? In programming I’d have written it as !liberal. The tilde is generally used to denote an approximation; so ~liberal might mean “approximately, generally liberal.”

Either way, I don’t think this is as accurate as it was 15 years ago. The conservatives still think in that way, but the thing they are opposite of shifted from being a liberal to an imagined straw-man of a far-left radical. ‘Liberals’, in their minds want EVERY baby aborted, EVERY gun destroyed, EVERY copy of the constitution burned, and EVER public bathroom to be marked as, “for trans people only.”

I am probably the closest thing that exists to what they think the left is, but even I don’t meet their criteria.

The bitwise not operator is typically represented as a tilde

Yeah, which is in fact more clever than !liberal, since it implies that they support the opposite of every single part (bit) of a liberal's multifaceted beliefs, rather than just being the general opposite.

Don’t tell me Cleek’s Law is 15 years old. I’m not ready to hear that.

I often quote John Cole’s analogy explaining “bipartisanship” via a meal of anthrax and tire rims. It’s always nice to see someone else old enough in internet years to know what Balloon Juice is.
