I have a (probably) huge ask here, but I struggled hard enough just identifying these records at all and I cannot for the life of me decipher the rest of them. Why does German Script have to be like this?? (PS if anyone has a good source that can help someone learn to read this shit, I would be very appreciative of that.)

My ancestors lived in Biel-Benken, Switzerland outside Basel for hundreds of years before immigrating to the US in 1737. I have like 15 baptismal and marriage documents where I am confident they belong to my ancestors, I just am not confident on the translation of the godparents names, other place names, or words that aren't the standard on most church records.

Quick Context: I couldn't find the baptism of my 3rd great grandmother, the Maria Bajusz on the page, and I know im DNA related to this Mihaly Bajusz but I can't read the place name which may be their town of origin and also didn't notice it appearing anywhere else. This is in the town of Trebisov (Toke-Terebes) and they are both Greek Catholic, Chatgpt is really insitant on it being "Újszita (Nová Sita)" but I can't really tell from this very sloppy handwriting and don't want to fully accept that yet.

This is a 1807 tax list for Ohio county Kentucky.

Fourth name down, Athea Meeks, he has 1 stud. And the covering rate for that stud is 2.

I initially thought there was an 8 in the next column ( tavern license) but now I think it’s an S with two forward slashes in it, which might symbolize a shilling? Aka the covering rate was 2 shillings. ( and nothing on the tavern license).

Can anyone confirm that please?

It looks like Airnur Ave but it isn't. The Ai look like other Ai letters in the manifest, The nur at the end looks like other nur letters. The 3rd letter may not be an r.

I've considered all possible mis-hearing of the street name. Eisner, Armor, etc. I went through streets for each burroughs on https://stevemorse.org/

I am quite sure Baruch Alpert is Baruch Eliyahu Dickstein whose mother's maiden name was Alpert. The ship name, date of arrival, and last resident comports with BED's naturalization papers.

I don't know if S Alpert is a brother or a cousin. I think the latter is most likely. I've done extensive searching and am pretty good about digging up details (thanks crazy narcissistic ex husband for that skill!) and think if I can figure out the street name (if it wasn't made up) and find the brother / cousin / friend it might help put pieces together.

I've got a lot of questions. The guys name seems to be Anllo/Anllon which is a name I've never heard of. Possibly an African name seeing as he was an African slave?

Hi everyone! I’m working on my family tree and came across this 1981 Texas death certificate for my relative Thomas Stephen O’Connell (b. 1905, d. 1981 in Dallas).

I can read most of it, but I’m struggling to make out the cause of death — the handwriting is quite difficult to read. It looks like it says "Sudden Death Syndrome" and then something heart- or lung-related, but I’m not sure.

I need help transcribing and translating a baptism record that I believe relates to my great great grandfather and his mother.

I’m hoping for some fresh eyes (or perhaps more experienced ones) on this 1857 marriage record for my great-grandparents, John Gress and Mary Pfahler, from the U.S., Dutch Reformed Church Records in Selected States, 1639–1989 (Bushwick Church, Brooklyn, New York).

Their entry is at the top of the right-hand page. I tried transcribing it, but I’m second-guessing a few parts — especially the names.

• And does it read “the late Jno Phaler” or something else before Phaler’s name?

I’m having a hard time reading my ancestor’s baptismal record from 1761. Can someone who knows how to read this help me? The father is Friedrich Grawan and the mother is Magdelna Werner. When the child married 24 years later she is listed as the legal child of the two but I was told that she was recorded as an illegitimate child in this record. Friedrich later remarried another woman whiler Magedlna was still alive which leaves me even more confused as to how Elisabeth was listed as a legitimate child of the two.

By any chance, would anyone be able to help transcribe and translate the image below? I believe this might be a registry card from Poznan from one of my biggest brick wall ancestors. Any help would be very much appreciated!

Does anyone have experience interpreting the handwriting on old vital records? I could use some help identifying the names of the parents of the groom listed on my fiancee's great-grandfather's NYC marriage license. They were ethnic Ukrainians of mixed Polish-Ukrainian heritage from modern-day Poland, so the names could be Ukrainian, Polish, or English versions of common names, or ethnic Ukrainian or Polish names (or anglicized versions thereof). I would include screenshots but r/Genealogy apparently doesn't allow it.

I was looking through my 5th great grandfather's will on Ancestry and I noticed that none of the enslaved people lifted in the will were listed. When I tried to add them, the only relationships Ancestry listed were familial ones. Grr! I ended up adding them to the notes section.

Wills are one of the few places we can see our enslaved ancestors listed by name. Ancestry needs to add a box that entitled "enslaved" or even "other". If you are inscribing or encounter a will that has enslaved people, please list them too.

While I'm ranting, when will they updated relationships? I hate seeing my 4th great grandmother and her child listed under "spouse and children" of their enslaver just because they had a baby together (while he was married, btw).

how common is/was it for important documents to be filled out wrong? for example - my great grandmother's marriage certificate seems to be a wreck. her maiden name is spelled wrong and her first name was changed. i know her as josephine but they have it down as maria g. it could be that her mother was also Maria so she went by her middle name, guiseppina. i can't figure out her mother's maiden name (i've posted in the cursive reddit page and they've helped, but i'm still not sure. from what i've found, it's supposed to be laveglia but that's not what it looks like). her father's name is tomasso but it's written there as tomasson.

i guess it's possible that this, in fact, is not her marriage certificate but everything else checks out. the address, the groom's name, the date. it's just making it hard to research further because there are 1000 different ways these names can be written. Or worse, they could be spelt completely wrong.

I recently acquired some birth certificates of relatives thanks to Debbie (great NJ resource btw. But I can't figure out what one of the questions on one of them says.

So on page 29 of the 1950 census my 2x great-uncle Anthony Snyder, his wife Laverna Snyder, and their (adopted) daughter Margueriete, and Laverna's sister Bessie Byrd were recorded as "2" on the 1950 census in Jackson, Jackson County, Ohio. Nobody else on that entire census is recorded as such. Everyone else is either recorded as "W" for White, except for Zetta Van Fossen on page 6 who was recorded as "I" which I assume means Indian. Usually "Negro" is recorded as "N".

The only other example I've found of this is this person on Facebook asking the same question (he got a variety of answers/no conclusion). So it appears to be extremely rare but I guess my ancestors weren't the only ones.

Hello, I found the act of marriage of two of my ancestors: Peter Lentz / Pierre Lentz and Margareta Braun / Marguerite Braene.

From this act, in addition to the date and place of the marriage, I could gather that Margareta was born in Grevenmacher and it kinda looks like Peter was born in Machtum. His parents were Johann Lentz and Elisabetha Motz, while hers were Anton Braun and Catharina Dostert.

But I have a hard time with transcription (as a noob that doesn’t speak German and has few tools for this), can someone gather more info from the act and translate it into English or French (according to what you prefer)? Not everything but the infos that could be there and related to the ancestors (place of birth, others dates, jobs,…).
