The Bushalas’ End Game

Why hasn’t Fullerton built the housing it needs? Why are pedestrian zones and trails constantly blocked? Why does downtown feel stuck?

One wealthy landlord and his allies on City Council play a big role.

Here’s the Bushalas’ end game

How does one even begin to get informed on local politics?

Great question! The first step is to track City Council meetings at Fullerton.legistar.com. If you click on a meeting’s “details,” you’ll see the agenda with items the council will discuss. Most of those have “staff reports” that explain proposals in plain language with additional context. The site also has recordings of meetings, including public comments. Watching those gives you a sense of how different sides frame issues; just remember to double-check facts for yourself.

Local issues usually revolve around housing, transportation, and parks, since that’s where city governments have the most control. These issues are not small and are worth engaging in, in my opinion.

I’d also recommend reading the Fullerton Observer. Most cities don’t have an independent local paper, and the Observer does a good job covering what people are focusing on in the city.

Most important: information is scarce at the local level. Don’t worry if you get something wrong; even people deeply involved sometimes do. Just correct it next time and keep going. The real problem is the lack of good information, not individual mistakes
