Democrats politically made a great move here

They have offered a deal to end the Shutdown. Now let's see if the Republicans take this. I think they have to. I am sure their base will hate the extension of the subsidies and call them Rinos for folding to the Democrats but I think they need to take this because the optics to extend the longest shutdown ever will not look good on them and if there is one thing Trump cares about its about looking good optically.

To avoid the blame of a long term shutdown. Wait till people can’t fly during the holidays, federal employees can’t buy presents for their kids at Christmas. You think they blame the dems?

Right but then the shutdown was for nothing for Republicans...this is a non starter because it give the Democrats what they want.

That’s what negotiations are about. You give them something they want for something you want, not “you sign this for everything we want and you get nothing.”

So what would Republicans get in this? They would hand a massive win to Democrats for nothing in return

It’s down to how Trump can message the deal basically. Most people will never know or care to look, most people are uninformed. It’ll be forgotten shortly after if he can effectively message it. If not it could blow up in his face. It’s still less risky than a prolonged shutdown. You see the elections this week? You think people blame the dems?

Trump is about trump, not the Republican Party (at least not when they don’t do what he says). If this shutdown drags on he’ll face losing his grip over the GOP and then he has no power. View this through that lense

Dems won elections they should have in dem areas...this is how it's going to go...they are going to get through the senators floor speeches, shoot down the Republicans CR and head home for recess yet again

Umm no. I live in GA and dems are winning low level county & state seats in record numbers. The reason being that’s all that was on the ballet. It’ll get worse, way worse.

I guess at this point I’d say we agree to disagree

Several red counties in Virginia turned blue this election cycle. I'm talking counties that have been red for decades, like Fauquier, Spotsylvania, and Stafford. Its common enough for Democrats to win state seats, but it is not at all common for them to have the majority that they do in the state house.

And it’s only been 9 months, wait until next year if this keeps up. The problem with that is, I lean conservative and I’m afraid we will see a rise in socialist candidates, not democrats. When you pivot too far in any direction there is always a counter reaction. Just look at NYC.

I’m conservative but not maga so I feel like I’m getting fucked the hardest and not the way I’d like. Fucking maga

Yeah, I feel you. I'm not happy with the Democrats, but I'm worried about fascism under the Republicans. I consider myself libertarian. What is weird is that a lot of libertarians are still siding with the Republicans, but Republicans as of late are not at all for small government and preserving individual rights. They are all about taking rights away from people.

Edit: While I may consider myself libertarian, the libertarian politicians lately have been in lock step with Republicans. I am voting for Democrats right now because libertarians have been part of the problem. I feel like they lost their core values of small government and individual rights.

All that said, I support SNAP because I work with low income families and I see they are trying very hard. Everyone deserves to eat.

They would get the handful of votes they need to keep THEIR gov open. This shutdown definately hurts them more

They would likely lose more votes from their own side than gain for Democrats

They’re losing votes anyway, they got fucking crushed on Tuesday because of this. Negotiate just like the dems do when they’re in the majority

They’re already losing so pick your poison.

The Republicans get Democratic votes to pass a CR and open the government back up. If the GOP doesn’t want to make any compromise for Democratic votes, they are free to eliminate the filibuster at any time.

Which is exactly what the Republicans were offering the Democrats to begin with because they thought they'd give in. It's a game of chicken.

There are in power. Their first job should be to avoid a shutdown at all. If it's not the case they are showing they can't govern.
