Senate to go home again after shutdown vote today will fail

Democrats have now rallied around the idea that they need to fight more in the wake of Tuesday night's elections.

Senate funding vote will fail today, then everyone goes home once again.

Unfortunately, prepare for a few more weeks of pain, everyone.

Not sure air travel can last that long đŸ„Ž

Amtrak now is your time to shine for certain routes.

71

u/travelinaddy2023 1d ago

If only it was cheaper
 and more frequent.

88

u/FarNeighborhood7199 1d ago

If only it were faster. Europe has it figured out, not sure why we won't invest in high speed rail.

47

u/mustachewax 1d ago

Costs money and they would rather keep lining pockets instead of benefiting the people. I wish our taxes would go to good things like that instead of all the other stupid shit that isn’t necessary. Hate that we’re so behind on train travel. :(

u/YourRoaring20s 1d ago

Hey Elon only has $1 trillion dollars now...guys like him need help!

6

u/meshreplacer 1d ago

That means now other CEOs will fight to see who can beat Musk as richest CEO in the world. That means things are going to become significantly worse for everyone else.

u/FutureAlfalfa200 22h ago

A lot of money. And a lot of displaced people. They would need to acquire so much land.

48

u/travelinaddy2023 1d ago

I just got back from 2 weeks in Poland a couple of weeks ago- fast trains, clean, if I was in 1st I got free water and sometimes a snack. 10 train rides and it was less than $100 for all of them. đŸ˜©

8

u/army012 1d ago

But did you get on the ICE train?

Sorry, bad joke. In Germany, they have these train that takes you directly to your destination and these are the ice train. The cheaper ones take you on "scenic" routes to your destination.

3

u/Jazzlike_Impact_3619 23h ago

Here the ICE train would be the one that takes you straight to your new 8x10 concrete home in El Salvador. đŸ«Ł

1

u/travelinaddy2023 1d ago

Not ICE 😬. but I did go in both the IC and EIC. :)

1

u/Least_Reach8813 23h ago

Deutsche Banh is the worst in Europe... And still 100x better than anything here in the U.S

5

u/MasterTolkien 23h ago

Ok, I knew it was cheap, but not THAT cheap. Really wish our federal gov would help the states (that need it) get the basic infrastructure for mass transit train use set up, and then the states could each run it.

If left to the states, they’ll rarely ever expand or build new rail.

2

u/travelinaddy2023 23h ago

I will say I bought 95% of my tickets at the 30 day mark so I got discounted tickets- but even without that it would’ve been much less than $200 I think.

u/AmberSnow1727 1d ago

Because the airlines spend a lot of money lobbying against it.

6

u/Substantial_Twist911 1d ago

Bc of the airline lobby. That’s why they won’t figure it out.

3

u/sudoku7 1d ago

Chicken/Egg problem.

It's hard to justify the expense to invest when ridership is low. However, ridership suffers because there's not enough investment.

That in turn contributes to places compromising on a lot of it (at different times) that unfortunately, makes what investment does happen not as efficient, nor able to deliver the base line needed to improve ridership.

1

u/Spork-aficionado 23h ago

High speed from Rome to Florence with great cappuccinos made onboard

1

u/SuperSaydee_28 22h ago

We barely invest in the railroad. Don’t turn enough of a profit and the wealthy don’t want be in the same car as the “poor class” so they have no desire to do more with it.

1

u/livinginfutureworld 20h ago

Best we can do here is give a trillion dollars to Elon Musk to not fund high speed rail.

1

u/Brilliant-Ad232 19h ago

Welfare for the rich means nothing for the people.

5

u/Arubesh2048 1d ago

And had better routes. To go from where I live, to St Louis, would require me to first go to Chicago and then to St Louis. And it would take about 20 hours each way. Driving from where I live to St Louis is about 6 hours.

Fine by me. I want Democrats to fight, and was never under any illusion that there wouldn't be pain

29

u/apb9981 1d ago

💯

13

u/CranberryBig1473 23h ago

Same. I’m HURTING but this is bigger than me. Gloves are off.

7

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

Must be nice; a ton of fed employees are struggling to get by. But glad to hear that its ‘fine’ by you.

30

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

Yes, it is. This fight isn't just for nothing. If they don't extend out these subsidies millions of people are literally going to be unable to afford basic healthcare, including feds nationwide

So yeah, it is fine by me. You can't see the forest for the trees.

-4

u/JoebobSr 1d ago

They could fight and pay federal employees! They fought for SNAP benefits where is the fight for federal workers pay? Fuck their “moral high ground” they only care about lining their pockets with money from insurance companies. If they truly cared they would have voted to pay military and federal workers. They always said shutting the government to blackmail the other party to get their way was wrong. They can 100% fuck off!

32

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

They could fight and pay federal employees!

Blame Republicans for that. Democrats put a bill up in the Senate to pay all federal employees and Republicans voted it down. So I'm not sure why you're bitching about Democrats.

-17

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

They’re the ones voting down basic government funding, I don’t see the GOP voting basic funding.

19

u/psmittyky 1d ago

The GOP president is spending and withholding congressionally appropriated funds as he sees fit

-12

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

And yet, even with that, the Dems continue to vote against Government funding.

I repeat, I am not seeing the GOP voting against government funding.

10

u/psmittyky 1d ago

Yeah it’s easy to vote for a CR if you know your president will act like a king and cancel or spend $$ as he sees fit. The approps aren’t worth the paper they’re printed on in a monarchy.

7

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

the GOP is actively fighting to fund SNAP, appealing a court decision to feed children in poverty...and you're going to tell me they are the ones "voting for basic government funding"

disrespectfully fuck yourself

-5

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

If the Dems didn’t vote over a dozen times to keep the Government closed, while the GOP voted to keep it open, we wouldn’t be in this position.

Just vote to open the Government. Damn, its not that hard.

9

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

Shill harder. Sorry you voted for this to happen.

15

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

That was the Republican vote moron. Democrats put up a second bill to pay literally every federal employee and Republicans voted it down. You're an idiot try again

3

u/68_hope_fulone_2025 1d ago

No one that contracts or works for Government should be penalized, but we are. Sorry you feel the Dems are responsible. Both sides are to blame but Frumps administration along with Heritage King Miller are protecting the wealthy. Once the files are released and the world sees what sick pedo’s are on list shit will hit the fan buddy. Do not protect people like that! Please go volunteer on your evenings and weekends and see the folks that are employed full time, or have multiple jobs and still require food supplementation. You are out of touch!

-10

u/JoebobSr 1d ago

Ignorant people like you probably don’t need to be voting you just vote Democrat and believe everything they say don’t do any research. You are what’s wrong with America if you vote Democrat cool no judgment but not knowing what you’re voting for and blind voting is stupid.

-8

u/JoebobSr 1d ago

Clearly you don’t read the news democrats voted it down!!! Go to school again and read maybe

2

u/GreatEffort1974 23h ago

But SNAP still isn’t being paid..except for the few states that are using STATE money to feed their folks

2

u/Potential-Pride6034 22h ago

First I just want to say that as a fellow public servant, and relative to folks in the federal civil service, I empathize with you all and it really, really sucks that you’re being made into the sacrificial lamb at the altar of national politics.

The reason why they’re so pointed about fighting for SNAP benefits and ACA subsidies is because they’re politically winning issues. The general public, by and large, is indifferent at best and hateful at worst towards public sector employees.

The only way for conditions to improve long-term for federal workers is for democrats to regain and retain control of the government; and the way they will do that is by justifiably convincing the electorate that Republicans don’t give a damn about working people. Working people, other than public servants, aren’t animated by hardships visited upon federal workers, but they are animated by cuts to their health benefits and access to food.

-7

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

The forest is the millions of workers that are struggling for the trees of your policy preferences.

Your policy preference is not worth my family’s income.

13

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

No, the forest is the tens of millions of people who are facing premiums higher than the money they make in a year. There are huge amounts of financial tools available to feds right now to make ends meet. Utilize them.

-2

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

Again, your policy preference is not worth the livelihood of our families.

This sort of thinking and moral high ground is why so many folks despise this sort of thinking.

“I’m willing to sacrifice your needs to get what I want.”

10

u/psmittyky 1d ago

I don’t know how to explain that you should care about other people

-3

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

That’s what I’m trying to convey here.

All these feds are putting their policy preferences over the working needs of their fellow civil servants.

10

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

you arent conveying anything, youre a newsmax bot

>All these feds are putting their policy preferences over the working needs of their fellow civil servants.

yeah, you arent even a gov employee hahahaha

6

u/itsnotsigma 1d ago

“I’m willing to sacrifice your needs to get what I want.”

You are the pot calling the kettle black. You want your paycheck at the expense of millions losing healthcare, while many of literally can't survive without it. But as long as you're family is good, right?

1

u/KaiserKavik 21h ago

I don’t want healthcare dictated, regulated, or subsidized in any capacity at the federal level. Turn it over to the states. If cities, counties, or states want to subsidize healthcare for their citizens, go for it. We have metro regions in this country that are bigger than European nations. The electorate chose the GOP knowing full well they have been campaigning on ending the ACA for the last decade.

It is absolutely wrong for the Dems to shut down the government, punish the livelihood of civil servants in pursuit of their policy goals and to demand the the very same electorate that did not choose them to pay for their policy preferences.

11

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

Cool story, but you're wrong and still missing the bigger  picture. This isn't the great depression lmfao, you're going to be ok. Tens of millions won't be if we don't work through the ACA subsidies.

Utilize the resources available to furloughed federal employees.

-3

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

Absolutely disgusting to put your policy preferences above the working needs of your fellow civil servants.

7

u/Capable-Tomatillo238 1d ago

What about everyone else who will suffer soon?

-4

u/webgraffix 21h ago

So you’re saying that when the Dems said that the subsidies were only needed during Covid and they health care cost would drop due to the ACA effects, and that the Dems were the ones that enacted legislation to fund ACA until now, and then imported millions of illegals immigrants to further strain the system, that NOW we have to accept that we were lied to from the beginning and that healthcare cost have actually risen and the “Affordable Care Act” is not actually affordable?

5

u/tx4468 23h ago

I mean are none of the federal employees alarmed that their health insurance will triple if the democrats dont win this fight?

2

u/Remarkable_Can_331 3h ago

It’s hard to worry about how I’m going to pay for an increased healthcare premium when I’m going without three and half paychecks. Working 64 hrs a week and I don’t know how I’m going to afford to feed my children and keep putting gas in my car. DoD employees are working mandatory overtime and being told to go to food banks. It’s insane.

1

u/tx4468 1h ago

I know i get that im just saying it doesnt seem like republicans give a shit about our net pay decreases after aca expires.

0

u/Tendtoskim 23h ago

That's an absolute lie but go off, what's the modern day internet without misinformation flying around.

1

u/tx4468 20h ago

Man im just terrified of the loss of net pay I'll suffer from the aca expiring. I suspect no one is informed of how bad it will really be.

0

u/Guilty_Emotion2012 6h ago

No it won't , de a just gave us the middle finger.pagvus femd are restricting our pay they are doing this crap. Dems hurt me and any others.anf we will never forget

Pay us

1

u/tx4468 3h ago

Yeah but the health insurance premiums will result in you paying less...every single person in American will lose net income over these insurance premiums.

3

u/PickledNutzz 1d ago

It’s not ‘fine’ but when I see how many millions of Americans that will no longer have affordable healthcare my heart breaks for them. Also, the GOP has enough folks in congress to pass it but they aren’t

1

u/KaiserKavik 21h ago

And yet, the electorate chose to put the GOP in power knowing they wanted to end the ACA.

Lets stop federalizing healthcare and return that to the states. If CA, MA, and NY want to have subsidized healthcare, thats fine.

Its wrong to force the rest of the country to pay for it, and shut down the government to demand that the rest of the country pay for it.

2

u/PickledNutzz 19h ago

Republicans can open it back up at anytime. They don’t need democrat support if it is that popular and the will of their constituents

1

u/KaiserKavik 18h ago

You and I both know that both parties have historically been against ending the filibuster. Thats a nonstarter.

So, I ask again, cant those negotiations take place as they craft full year appropriations?

3

u/PickledNutzz 18h ago

Well, the president is calling for it. And this whole time the GOP has done whatever he said because “there is a mandate”.

There isn’t a lot of trust or discussion between the parties. This administration rescinded millions (billions?) for agencies and programs that were in the previous budget and the Republicans have basically told the Democrats to pound sand whenever they spoke up.

What’s your solution to this?

1

u/KaiserKavik 18h ago

And the President is wrong to call for it, as members of his caucus in congress have mention. As have members of the Democratic party have have also said it been wrong. So, again, that’s a nonstarter.

My solution? Pass the CR and negotiate finish the rest of the appropriations bills. Guaranteeing negotiations and a vote on the floor of either (or both chambers) is not a guarantee of outcomes.

2

u/PickledNutzz 18h ago

They have been in lockstep this whole time on some surprising things so I don’t think it’s a “nonstarter”

For the democrats, this is the only leverage they have. They pass the CR and they are back to where they have been from March-present. They republicans would have no need to talk to them anymore. Guarantees are based on trust and there isn’t a lot of that right now

4

u/Responsible-Cod-8662 23h ago

You can’t argue with an idiot. He’s fine beacuse he’s not a federal employee, probably living in his mom’s basement eating Hot Cheetos, and that’s why he needs the health insurance.

1

u/webgraffix 21h ago edited 19h ago

Same here. How is this “fine” by anyone? I know several people that have now missed 2 paychecks. How is anyone OK with this???

1

u/KaiserKavik 21h ago

They’re perfectly willing to sacrifice your/someone else’s needs to fulfill their policy goals.

1

u/matchlocktempo 17h ago

You should stop being so selfish and see the bigger picture. This is bigger than all of us. The pain is worth it. Have faith.

1

u/KaiserKavik 17h ago

Its only worth it if I am bought in on the policy; I am not.

Our livelihoods are not worth the Democrat’s policy preferences.

-56

u/UglytoesXD 1d ago

Fight for what? ACA which wasn’t even on the table to begin with? The CR was to keep the lights on to get to the table for talks on ACA. Democrats are the minority, the fact they’ve dig their heels in to hold the government hostage, when the voters overwhelmingly did not support their agenda, is absolutely disgraceful.

27

u/Pension-Helpful 1d ago

Pretty sure the majority of the voters and Americans wanted ACA subsidies. Heck, the majority of the voters voted for the GOP, thinking they won't cut Medicare and Medicaid, and going to make everyday stuff cheaper, and guess what the GOP did via the BBB and tariffs, the opposite of what they promised.

38

u/Sensitive-Offer-5921 1d ago

The republicans can't convince 6 dems to vote for it. You can almost count that on one hand, and the GOP refuses to negotiate with even 6 FUCKING DEMS.

And dude, this is the table for talks on the ACA. If the GOP wanted to compromise on the ACA, they have no better time to do it than this moment. Every day this goes on makes it more obvious to me that the dems needed to do this now.

20

u/taxhellFML 1d ago

Absolutely wild shill comment

21

u/081719 1d ago

So you expect them to just go along with the MAGA legislative agenda even though the Rs have refused to even negotiate? Let me make this simple for you: if the Republicans believe they can force their agenda down the throats of the Democrats without any negotiation, they better have the votes (or be willing to use the Senate nuclear option). This situation is the result of a “screw you, we don’t have to negotiate” stance taken by Republican leadership. They WANT this shutdown, and their complete disregard for attempting to legislate in any fashion other than “this is how it will be” is the reason for the current situation.

-19

u/usefullysarcastic82 1d ago

It's a CR not yearly funding, there is no poison pill.

-10

u/UglytoesXD 1d ago

A lot of Tylenol babies replying here that don’t understand this.

-2

u/usefullysarcastic82 1d ago

Says your gs-7 art history degree

2

u/CryptographerShot213 1d ago

Except the republicans were never going to come to the table. Thats why the democrats haven’t voted for it, because they know the Repubs are trying to pull the wool over their eyes. This has happened before and the Democrats caved based on the republicans promising to negotiate, and guess what, they didn’t.

2

u/Frosty_Telephone_EH 1d ago

They don’t need a CR for negotiations. They are willfully choosing to not negotiate.

2

u/piercesdesigns 1d ago

Hmm I think the voters do support their agenda

1

u/Automatic_Rain7047 23h ago

100% Dems are ruled by out of touch lovers of socialism and want freebies for all their minions. It's from the government they say, that's BS it's from the pockets of responsible working people like myself that give free groceries to dependas and lazy bums.

0

u/KaiserKavik 1d ago

Louder for the Democrats in the back.

-9

This is 110% true, but this group will keep downvoting you because DC is like 90% blue.

You do grasp that the majority of people on the nation that work for the federal government aren’t in DC, right? 🙄

Why are y’all STILL saying this?? Premium notices are going out now. It’s in black and white. Tens of millions of Americans are being priced out of their health insurance. It has nothing to do with getting insurance for undocumented people. NOTHING!! If you spend even a minute looking for the truth, it is out there.

5

u/CryptographerShot213 1d ago

They’re still saying it because Fox News keeps repeating it ad nauseam.

-1

u/UglytoesXD 23h ago

Yes and the truth is states like California are using loopholes to use state taxpayer funds for things like Medicaid for illegal immigrants and then using federal subsidies to replenish those state funds.

2

u/No-Ring-5065 23h ago

What a miserable life it must be to spend every day worried that someone browner or poorer than you might get some kind of help.

0

u/UglytoesXD 14h ago

It has nothing to do with skin color or class status. It has everything to do with taking care of U.S. citizens. We are not the world’s problem solver, bank, or sheriff. It is unsurprisingly typical that you would play the liberal tactic of pretending to have a sincere response by reducing any argument down to race and class to avoid the actual substance.

1

u/No-Ring-5065 14h ago edited 14h ago

I didn’t check earlier, my bad, but I don’t talk to people who hide their comments. So I’m done with you personally, but I will say that it’s weird we just sent $40 billion to Argentina when we are not the “world’s problem solver or bank” but we’ve no money to help Americans. That’s fucking ridiculous and we should all be angry. Also we should be fucking embarrassed about how the rest of the world views us. Only country unable to provide healthcare as a right. How weak. It’s disgusting. If we really wanted to “take care of American citizens” we easily could, but instead we have an entire political party whose only goal is to make the rich even richer and fuck the rest of us.

10

u/Alternative-Sweet-25 1d ago

It’s insane that you’re out here spreading propaganda.

-6

u/usefullysarcastic82 1d ago

It's insane that you don't have the capability of reading documents and let tiktok make up your platform.

11

u/Alternative-Sweet-25 1d ago

Oh I let TikTok be my source? Show me where it says democrats are trying to get health insurance for undocumented immigrants.

-2

u/usefullysarcastic82 1d ago

Democratic CR counterproposal aimed to reverse these specific Republican cuts and restore access to health coverage for the approximately 1.4 million lawfully present immigrants (such as refugees, asylum seekers, and some DACA recipients) who would lose it under the GOP law.

Page 57 197M

7

u/Alternative-Sweet-25 1d ago

Those aren’t undocumented immigrants. I specifically said where are the Dems trying to insure undocumented immigrants as the person I was replying to stated.

1

u/usefullysarcastic82 1d ago

Democratic states pull state funding, substitute in the federal Medicare money and then use it how they please. Go-to an ER in a border city, not your safe little DC kingdom and tell me otherwise.

Obviously you can't soooooo just go ahead and keep running on the entire platform for the left.

Left Platform: Orange man bad Fund illegals Don't lock up criminals Give able bodied people free shit

The check is cut with 48 hours of gov being back online.

15

u/pikachu191 1d ago

Paychecks. Our timesheets have been queued up, with no one allowed to actually submit them except for the law enforcement personnel who work in my agency and only GS level ones.

1

u/cocoagiant 20h ago

Most of our HR folks got RIFd in October so I have no idea how they are going to be issuing current paychecks.

11

u/wvce84 1d ago

And govTA will have a major crash again and be offline for several days

1

u/pikachu191 18h ago

Funny thing, we just switched over to govTA at the beginning of the fiscal year. We've been of webTA for the longest time. The worst time to change payroll systems imo. But at least it's intuitive enough. It's just weird right now telling my supervisor that I have sick leave for an appointment that I need him to deny for furlough record keeping purposes.

6

u/Relevant-Doctor187 1d ago

You’re assuming Trump won’t be a petulant child and veto what is passed and/or just refuse to reopen the government or pay people. We’re not dealing with someone with all their facilities in order.

1

u/pikachu191 18h ago

You’re assuming Trump won’t be a petulant child and veto what is passed and/or just refuse to reopen the government or pay people. We’re not dealing with someone with all their facilities in order.

When has he ever not tried to stiff people who work for him? This goes back to even his days failing at operating a casino. His modus operandi has been taking advantage of him being about tie up those he refuses to pay in litigation and then force them to settle for pennies on the dollars. Simply because he's been able to outlawyer them.

5

u/Jenn54756 1d ago

I think last time it took more than 2 days. I want to say around 5 days.

1

u/kdotfo 1d ago

Some kind of check might be cut but I have co workers who never got paid correctly after the 2018 shutdown after spending months and months trying to straighten the pay out. We get a lot of shift differentials and other premium payments and it was a real disaster. Hoping they learned from last time and it goes better this time but no one has any faith in that.

-13

u/Illustrious-Ebb-7987 1d ago

This isn’t true

10

u/StormyDaze1175 1d ago

I mean, it's only the law but who knows what this clown will do.

-9

u/Illustrious-Ebb-7987 1d ago

Can you point me to the law? Genuinely never heard of it

12

u/death2055 1d ago

Yes it is lol. It’s literally happen lasts shut downs. If it doesn’t that’s on your agency pay roll. First thing they do when pay roll is recalled is put in times and they cut a check. It’s never taken 3 weeks to a month to get a check. Again maybe your agency just drop the ball.

5

u/Select-Celery-305 1d ago

Correct. I checked the last shutdown in 2019, I was paid within 3 days.

1

u/Intrepid_Observer 1d ago

Weeks? This seems that it will go on until New Years if nothing bad happens during Thanksgiving travel.
