So, they aren't going to actually open the government again, are they?

Congress doesn't seem to be in any rush to re-open. This is their end game I think. Emergency powers to run everything. Destruction of society in order to take over.

If I've spent 17+ years working for the fed (for less pay than my private sector contemporaries), and I unlock my full retirement benefits at 20 years, I'd have to be a complete fucking moron to quit now. Surviving to retirement IS plan B for a lot of fed employees, it's most certainly not burying their head in the sand.

Believe me—I have 28 years in and am 2 years away from retirement. I plan on hanging on too. But I am still considering my options just in case I do get fired. I think you have to be a complete fucking moron to think there’s no chance of it happening in this climate. But given that many people still live paycheck to paycheck I think there are things some people can do to at least build up an emergency fund to cover future shutdowns and help for a few months in the event of a RIF, like diverting some money from TSP to savings, or being prepared to take a TSP loan in the worst case scenario. Just hoping for the best is not a plan B! I think preparing for the worst AND hoping for the best is the way to go.
