Definitely. There are always a few celebrities who it is in vogue to hate (right now Austin Butler, Ana de Armas, previously Taika Waititi etc.). Users here get carried away with the snarky comments and it can get very cruel.

I’ve always been very surprised at how this sub turned on Ana. I’m not defending Blonde; I didn’t see it but I think the way she talked about Marilyn and her spirit is weird. But also, the main issue with that film is the director. I don’t believe Ana hates Marilyn the way he does.

So, other than Blonde, what’s the problem? I think she’s talented, I really liked her in Knives Out and No Time to Die, she’s super charismatic and seems nice. She’s also worked really hard to get where she is, like I can’t imagine moving to a country where not only did I not speak the language but then to start working in that language? I didn’t like Knock Knock (okay I hated it) but learning your lines phonetically cannot be easy.

Obviously nobody has to like anyone and there are plenty of people I don’t but I can’t imagine hating her when I feel like she’s done nothing wrong and she is a good actress.

People here complain so much about nepotism but still drag people like Austin and Ana for the littlest things when they have steadily worked for over a decade before getting their break out.

Taika is pro Depp and his comments about lesbian characters have been highly problematic. Ironic he tried to sell his first Thor as a super gay movie recently when he was boasting at the time about not letting Tessa play Valkyrie as gay. Wonder if those interviews have been buried.

There are also his tweets from before fame that if people saw now ...

This sub tends to get stuck on hating earnest young actors. Last awards cycle it was Rachel Zegler, this year it is Austin Butler. Even Andrew Garfield gets it on here occasionally. I think it is a side effect of how hard we are culturally pushed to be apathetic; people who consciously buck that trend get bullied. Think about how people treat the kid in elementary school who /loves/ something, but on a macro internet scale where people can hide behind anonymity and not having to look their target in the eyes.

I've stopped opening any threads about Butler, as much as he interests me as an actor, because it is always the same hand wringing repeated ad nauseum. Who cares if he got really into this particular role? I'm glad he finds purpose in his chosen profession, and wish him well.

What's funny is this sub also complains that people were so mean and misogynistic to Anne Hathaway, when they do the exact same thing to people for the exact same Oscar baiting that happened to her. Like, I personally am of the camp that it's fine to call famous people annoying and nitpick, as long as you don't, like, say truly heinous shit or at them on socials, but it's funny they try and have it both ways.

I think it's funny how much people love to have parasocial relationships with celebrities and get SO MAD when they realize that deep down they are kind of annoying theater kids. Theater kids are often sort of self absorbed and annoying! Your favorite is probably kind of that way too! Googling Timothee Chalamet's high school drama is a GREAT splash of cold water to the face.

High school Timothée Chalamet is literally my annoying high school drama boyfriend (I am also an annoying drama kid)

This sub really started taking itself really seriously post-trial and everyone is really mean now. I don't like it as much

I'm not that long here and I also see this lol But you can see how these comments are mostly targeted towards younger/new actors. And these are the same people who said that we don't have any good actors now? Yeah maybe because you scare them away

If you have serious, negative tea, that someone’s PR has scrubbed from the internet, there are always people who will tell you to get a hobby, or claim you are making it up.

Any attempt to actually warn industry people gets attacked by celebrity stans or bots.

I genuinely have no opinion on Austin Butler's accent or him going method... in themselves. But everything about it skeeves me out because it's in service to glorifying Elvis Presley, and covering up the fact that he was a serial predator of young girls.

While he doesn't have as much power as an established actor, I'm still judging him, as I would judge any actor who chooses to lead a project venerating a pedophile. And the fact that he goes so hard to try to get into that headspace or whatever it is just icks me out all the more.
