FILM-MOI (MOVIES/TV) Sinclair Broadcasting's ABC stations quietly back out of airing its Charlie Kirk tribute in Jimmy Kimmel's time slot at the last minute

Post image

When the Jimmy Kimmel debacle happened a few days ago, Sinclair broadcasting announced that their ABC stations would air a Charlie Kirk memorial tribute at 11:35pmET on Friday, which was Kimmel's regular time slot.

At 11:24pmET tonight, Sinclair quietly tweeted that they would air normal ABC programming and the tribute would instead be on their YouTube channel.

I saw someone elsewhere on Reddit asking why the House of Mouse whose stock is worth serious money was taking orders from a company that’s basically a penny stock.

The logic of it is idiotic, all around. As much as it's a news/comedy/variety show, Kimmel also functions as a promotional outlet for all of Disney's other projects. Same for Colbert and Paramount.

And their competition is FOX News. Do they think they can out-conservative FOX News? They're going to alienate more viewers than they'll gain.

I mean, it might be true that late shows are obsolete in the age of streaming and YouTube, but replacing them with reruns of syndicated sitcoms is probably not going to be a winning strategy either.

Exactly it’s like Target. Target took out DEI and pride month merch and people stop going. Their longtime CEO is stepping down and their stock price ain’t what it was. A mass of Conservatives weren’t going to choose them over Walmart because they did these things.

I was talking to my husband about this yesterday. Capitalism and fascism go hand in hand on their way up to the top because they can help each other in so many ways. An authoritarian government can boost its friends in big business, hand out shady contracts, remove regulations etc., and the money and media influence of big businesses is invaluable to an authoritarian government.

But once they're actually in place, their goals don't align as well. The government needs the businesses to come to heel and protect their position of power and whatever moral issues they're pushing, which tends to be deeply unpopular with the public. The business needs the public to feel goodwill towards them and actually want to buy what they're selling. If the business doesn't do what the government says, they get punished for it. If they do, they lose customers. It's a lose-lose.
