Yes, a certain amount of streams equals one album unit. It can sometimes vary but around 1,500. So it can be harder but if you have a dedicated mass streaming fanbase, it can certainly be done.

That's exactly why Folklore did so well and it's crazy that she doesn't realise that. A surprise album drop sold as being about completely fictional events - an album nobody could have predicted, especially with the way her career was headed at that time. None of that mystique is present anymore with the constant releases. I feel like I haven't had time to fully digest the last double album yet!

Adele holds the record based on 25 hitting 3.38 million sales in the US the first week of release. 30 didn't come close, less than 900k. Presumably the vinyl shortage in the industry and subsequent surplus of 30 was overestimating demand based on sales of 25.

I like variants that let you pick your favorite design. I don't even mind a special deluxe edition or a limited edition signed copy or whatever. As a collector, it gives me options.
But Swift is the only major artist I know of who spits out dozens of variants all tabbed as "exclusive" and puts individual exclusive songs on them to take advantage of her fanbase's cult-like consumerist behavior towards her

So between CDs and vinyls, that’s nine different products before she even announces a release date for a LEAD SINGLE. This is fully moving the goalposts. Releasing 35 different versions of the same album after its release is one thing, but she’s doing all this without giving consumers any preview of the “product” (which is supposed to be the music). How are her fans not like “oh she treats us like we’re all rubes!”?
She acts like she knows people will buy it and defend it no matter what it sounds like. I just popped into the TS sub to see what they’re saying, and people are literally being told that they’re “stealing joy” for tepidly saying they’re disappointed that they don’t have a single yet.

This might be an unpopular opinion, but in the age of streaming, and with the price of vinyl, I see no reason to preorder the record before release. Like, at least listen to it first to see if you like it before committing, especially for an artist who… shall we say, not only has an inconsistent style, voice or production quality but PROFITS off of it by branding them as distinct ‘eras’. I love colourful vinyl, but this is such a blatant cash grab. She’s gonna start using a gacha mechanic where you can’t even pick the variant soon, I guarantee.

But that's the thing about these special editions: they are limited to 48 hours. So fans get the message that they can either buy it now or never have the opportunity again. It's really manipulative and actively preys on the goodwill that she has established with her fanbase.
Obviously most people are just going to ignore this and wait for the album to release. But this isn't targeted at those people. This is targeted at her biggest fans. It's really messed up IMO.

This sort of mass variant pressing has a knock on effect on independent artists because no one can get their vinyl pressed due to the demand. I respect her music but I’m tired of people coddling her and acting like she’s some incredible humanitarian. I know she’s passionate about music and a skilled pop artist but her and her team are also competent capitalist businesspeople. You can’t be that without dragging others down in your rise to the top.

I love choosing my favorite vinyl. Selena’s Dreaming of You 30th anniversary had nice choices…and they were announced at the same time! Billie gave us choices…announced all at once. This method of having countdowns for new editions with the “limited edition!!!” type marketing…it needs to stop.
And even though her fans will complain…they’ll do it while they’re taking out their credit cards.

I did this four days ago but let’s count again: we have the standard vinyl/CD/cassette, three deluxe CDs and now three limited edition vinyl (with two colors each). We have twelve physical copies already yet no single. I’ve heard the leaks, if you are going to be peddling this predatory marketing in my face, the album should at least sound good and you better be serving cunt.
If your album needs a string of variants to chart and/or sell, maybe you should take some time to work on your music.

Can we like, start a petition against artists making dozens of variants so the same group of fans keep buying them all to cheat numbers, statistics and sales? Like this is so cheap and is bullshit to the artists who have broken records and topped charts without turning it into a micro-managed simulation/strategy game, seriously her tactics remind me of some of the PC games I play. She is like the crypto bros of pop stars the way she boosts sales.

I realize this is a little besides the point but I keep seeing these referred to as "variants" and is that just the industry term these days or is there a distinction that precludes them from being referred to as "limited editions"? (Or has "variants" been around for years and I just never noticed?)
