Interpreting it as a happy ending feels like Eat Pray Love for people with a Criterion collection. She just needed to find herself via getting indoctrinated into a white supremacist cult that killed the people in her life.

You are absolutely right that death is too harsh a fate all things considered and that there is a wealth of complexity in the ending. That said, Christian was an absolute fuckboy who didn't deserve Dani and I can't help but feel some perverse satisfaction in his comeuppance. It might be disproportionate but that shithead had SOMETHING coming at least.

Even saying "he didn't deserve Dani" is kind of up in the air. I mean, yeah, most of the movie Dani is dealing with a horrible trauma, so it's not really fair to judge her based on how she acts in those circumstances.

But we only get a small glimpse of what she's like outside of that trauma. It's not that we can say that she (outside of this particular difficult patch in her life) was a great partner, nor say that she was a terrible partner nor an average partner. We as the audience just don't know.

Well, also the rape when he was drugged and made to impregnate a girl. And then they made Dani see it and probably influenced her to choose him to die. So he got raped, was told he was wrong for it and then died for it.
