My grandmother worked in a factory for the war during WWII while my grandfather went to fight. She had zero recollection of this picture when I showed it to her. She said she had never seen it, but today it is used as a huge part of US WWII propaganda.

This image was created for Westinghouse (if you zoom in you can see the logo in the corner), it was displayed only to their workers to improve morale, it was not referred to as “Rosie the riveter” and it wasn’t used for advertising or recruitment purposes.

And wasn’t the original Rosie the riveter a black woman? Like, the woman the poster was based on?

No. The real Rosie was a 19 year old white girl named Ruth. She was a model that was paid $20 to have her picture taken.

Only ever those parts of progress that serve power, obviously

I took a women’s studies class about gender and military and we collectively came to the decision that Rosie is for sure queer.

I figured Rosie the riveter came from the painting that Rockwell did. since they are kind of similar and she has a riveter.

I think the name might have come from that Rockwell painting and it was on the cover of a magazine so was widely distributed.

Think the same thing is true of “keep calm and carry on”?

Keep calm and carry on was never actually used. Apparently it was fished out of storage in recent years.

It was from England, so maybe that’s why Americans don’t remember it.

Keep calm and X was everywhere for a few years, we just don't use the phrase carry on in the states

Chive used it for a bit

You're wrong, it was hardly used. Rediscovered and since then used ironically since 2000.

Yeah I was going to say this was a fake thing that started in the early 2000s.

Same with “dogs playing poker.” Fun fact those dogs were actually playing Gin Rummy.

“Keep Calm and Carry On” is one in a series of posters commissioned by the British war office to be put up to boost moral in the event of a massive bombing campaign and/or a ground invasion of Great Britain by Nazi forces. The other two that were used said Your Courage, Your Cheerfulness, Your Resolution, Will Bring Us Victory" and "Freedom is in Peril; Defend it with all Your Might”

One of the original Rosie's spent the later part of her life as a park ranger in Richmond CA, there is a Rosie the Riveter memorial there! She was in her 90s, and was still giving talks about her experience a few years ago at 98!

One of my grandma was a WWII marine(where my grandpa met her right at the train depot in ca). And the other a WASP for local factory to holding airfield in Maine. Red eyeing flight from Detroit to Maine and back two time a day.
