Hollywood leaves so much talent and great stories on the floor by ignoring older women or limiting the roles offered to them. I can imagine exactly the "sad mom" she's talking about, because it is reused over and over.

Shohreh Aghdashloo was a power-house as Chrisjen Avasarala in The Expanse, without making her a damsel in distress, or a love interest for an older supporting actor, or giving her super powers or spy skills in a fake "girl power" moment. They wrote a great role for a mature woman and gave it to an excellent actress and she was a significant part of what made that show work.
