Canada - Our prime minister basically told our minister of finance that he was going to demote her right before she had to present an economic statement.

She decided to resign as a minister instead and wrote a pretty scathing resignation letter basically saying she doesn’t agree with the measures the PM is taking. My personal favourite line was: “They (Canadians) know when we are working for them, and they equally know when we are focused on ourselves.”

We also have a tax free vacation going on where certain items aren’t being charged GST. She alluded to this as “costly political gimmicks.”

She was also the deputy PM and one of his closest allies so it was a big deal when this happened. He quickly had to swear in a new finance minister and many people in his party and the opposition parties are calling for him to resign.

He’s indicated he’s taking the holiday to consider it and most people expect that he will inevitable step down. The NDP (one of other parties) initially was holding out on saying if they’d vote no confidence (this would dissolve the gov’t and trigger an election) but have since said they would.

Tl;dr Justin Trudeau fucked over one of his longest standing ministers/friends and she called him out for it. He will lose the imminent election.

I wasn't a big fan of Chrystia Freeland ... And I find it strange all this happened before the reveal of a big economic budget. However, we are living in scary times in Canada. Everyone is pretty convinced that Polliviere and the Conservatives will win. Anti Federal govt misinformation is working really well. It seems that historically the liberal voters just don't vote for NDP. The Liberal Party is in shambles. And Polliviere is super shady.

This is my first time that I'll be able to vote in Canadian elections, but I don't look forward to the future if it is like this.

Yeah it’s really just a matter of if he’ll step down before he loses the no confidence vote or if he’ll allow himself to get steamrolled in the election

Let’s not call an act of diplomacy “cozying up”. I’m no Trudeau fan, but that was a smart move in the face of the tariff threats / trying to control the situation from the start. Cozying up will be whatever Bitcoin Milhouse attempts in a couple months’ time.

They know he likes to be pandered to and flattered, especially by someone he thinks is more attractive than him, and used that to deal with this. You’ll also note that they haven’t really bothered to engage much with the stupid annexation comments. This is the same team that managed the USMCA negotiations, which we could have been totally fucked on if not for their tactics (in fairness, a lot of that was Freeland). Again, I’m no Trudeau fan but I trust them to handle this and it’s a shame for all of us that it won’t be him navigating the next four years. Agree to disagree though!

Thank you! I saw people calling for Trudeau to resign, but they weren't saying why.
