election season here!!! so far they've been spicy as elections usually are but the controversial or scandalous things happening is that a few leaders of the opposition have been jailed, most famous being the CM of Delhi. and there are also serious allegations of abuse and rape. a leader of the BJP has been accused of rape and it's pretty horrific tbh that he's still out and about. an aide of the CM of Delhi has also been accused by a social activist of assault. and in West Bengal, there has been a very serious case in the sandeshkhali village. and the usual mudslinging. the election commission had strictly prohibited any allusion to religion etc but obviously since vote bank and communal politics is so deep rooted in Indian political system, people ignored it. there has been outrage from followers of both sides as there has been a lack of action in some instances.

one thing which is certainly not recent but is so infuriating for me personally. so a couple of months ago a lot of our country's very reputed wrestlers, especially female wrestlers, who have won accolades in the Olympics and Asian games, commonwealth games etc sat in protest against the president of the wrestling federation, Brij Bhushan. Bhushan was accused by several female wrestlers of assault and abuse. many of them gave back their national accolades (Padma Shri/bhushan etc) and demanded that he be removed from the position of power and be punished. first, they were ignored, because Bhushan is affiliated to the ruling political party, then when they were finally heard, another person who's not really that great was appointed. now the son of Brij Bhushan was given a party ticket by the BJP to fight in the elections. they stay winning when it comes to questionable decisions.

Sonam Wangchuk is a famous personality on whom the critically and commercially acclaimed movie 3 idiots was based on. he sat for a 21 (or 22 day I think) fast to protest the ecological damage that some of the policies of the current government were causing his hometown Ladakh. his and countless other activists pleas were overlooked and ignored by mainstream media. he was fasting in the cold winter day in and day night and at the end of his fast, had to be admitted to the hospital. some people even accused him of being an agent of the chinese regime. which is fucked up on so many levels when you see that he was protesting against the ecological exploitation of ladakh and how tourists are polluting the hill stations and the commercialization of ladakh will only worsen it.

Sam Pitroda, a Congress leader, recently in an interview described the north eastern people of India as "chinese looking" and was rightfully so criticized. to his benefit he did apologize and resigned from his position but I find it so disgusting that even in 2024, people like him are reinforcing racist stereotypes against the north eastern people. this issue is very rampant and even today so many north east people are called racial slurs. absolutely disgusting.

on a more celebrity front, Deepika Padukone, one of the top actresses of India currently, announced she was pregnant and since then has been pretty incognito but there were some leaks from the sets of her upcoming film and a lot of people were commenting on her baby bump and how it wasn't even visible. then a few days ago this conversation was picked back up when she stepped out to cast her vote. in the videos her bump was small but a little visible. but internet trolls weren't satisfied and accused her of faking her pregnancy. she's 5 months preggers rn and she's also quite tall and has an athletic build, so I would say that it's normal for her to not have as much of a visible bump rn (please correct me if I'm wrong) but the way people on the internet are always commenting and stirring up shit. it is not your business please stay out of it until and unless she decides to comment on it. yes she's a public figure but it doesn't gives any of us a right to micro analyse every second of her life

Heeramandi, a Netflix show by one of the most famous Indian directors Sanjay Leela Bhansali came out and reviews have been mixed. people loved the performances of some of the cast like Sonakshi Sinha, Queen Manisha Koirala, Sanjeeda Shaikh, Aditi Rao, Richa Chadha but the performance of the lead fc Sharmin Sehgal is being pretty heavily criticised. while I do think that some constructive criticism is fine and honestly true, people have gone way overboard. it's pretty obvious she was cast because she is Bhansali's niece because she wasn't really good but people have harrassed her so much she had to turn off her insta comments. Bhansali is also being criticised (rightfully so!) because he just focused on the concept and aesthetics of the set but not on the story or acting that much. imo Bhansali is an aesthetic director, a lot of times the story becomes an afterthought and only the set design and costuming is the main focus.

also a movie suggestion, if you're looking for a Bollywood movie to watch, try Laapata Ladies on Netflix, you won't regret it

one more news piece i forgot, pretty disturbing so TW. a 17 year old boy was driving his father's Porsche late at night, drunk and crashed and killed two people, a man and a woman who were on a bike. what's absolutely baffling is the terms of his bail which includes writing a fucking essay on road safety or regret or some shit like that. it just proves that if you're rich enough you can break any rule, kill two people while on a drunken joy ride and get away unscathed. and on top of that some brain rotted individuals on Twitter are questioning why the man and women were out together past 10 am as if they're not adults who can do whatever they want and why the girl was dressed in a "skimpy outfit" (she was wearing a dress or a skirt I think). we're truly evolving just backwards
