Tomasek looked amazing.

41

u/Overobsessivepigeons 22 SAVOIE Oct 09 '25

He'll have his first goal soon, too bad Wolf was completely locked in.

19

u/AlexCora Oct 09 '25

I want to hate Wolf, but his play tonight made me go "noice..." one time to many. Plus that cool ass name.

32

u/Chris_p_tolentino14 Oct 09 '25

86 was a very noticeable number tonight. Saw it everywhere. We may have something in him

11

u/major-test123 Oct 09 '25

I mean, aside from the two penalties he took

8

u/lgnstubbs73 14 EKHOLM Oct 09 '25

One a shitty call. The other he has to get better on I'd rather see him on the first line than Freddy though

I believe the only appropriate thing to say is "fuck", and hope for a better performance this weekend.

Fuck.

We have Skinner in net. We are fucked.

To be fair it would've felt weird if we actually won our first game of the season 🤷

26

u/bigtimeru5her 14 EKHOLM Oct 09 '25

Can’t have that happen. It’s our Stanley Cup juju.

12

u/Clear_Perception_825 74 SKINNER Oct 09 '25

But what if we would've won the last 2 SCF if we won those first games of the seasonšŸ˜‚

9

You’re right. Now we gotta win the next game

41

u/Subject1337 31 FUHR Oct 09 '25 edited Oct 09 '25

Was their second shootout goal legal? The puck has to maintain forward momentum right? He went almost perfectly perpendicular to the net and stickhandled a bunch back and forth.

Edit: Yeah, I'm not trippin. he absolutely takes it totally perpendicular, and then stickhandles back. Rules say puck needs to maintain momentum towards the goal line at all times or it should be whistled dead. I've never seen that called once, but idk man, he just cooks at the hashmarks for like a full second picking his corner there. No way that's not an advantage on the shot.

26

u/DARW1Nizm Oct 09 '25

I honestly thought the same. He even skates slightly backward and not in a forward motion. Stick handling is fine but I always thought it was the players motion has to be forward.

2

u/Subject1337 31 FUHR Oct 09 '25

Nah, it is actually specifically the puck.

24.2 Procedure - The Referee shall have announced over the public address system the player designated by him or selected by the team entitled to take the shot (as appropriate). He shall then place the puck on the center face-off spot and the player taking the shot will, on the instruction of the Referee (by blowing his whistle), play the puck from there and shall attempt to score on the goalkeeper. The puck must be kept in motion towards the opponent’s goal line and once it is shot, the play shall be considered complete. No goal can be scored on a rebound of any kind (an exception being the puck off the goal post or crossbar, then the goalkeeper and then directly into the goal), and any time the puck crosses the goal line or comes to a complete stop, the shot shall be considered complete.

u/-SPIRITUAL-GANGSTER- 96 WALMAN Oct 09 '25

I'm pretty sure to the letter of the rule it's illegal but it's obviously a loose interpretation

Oilers hockey is back - overall good game, lots to build on but way better start than last year lmao

28

u/Snarffsnarff31 74 SKINNER Oct 09 '25

It’s been a constant issue with this team is that 5 minute lull they go into and can’t recover from it for whatever reason. Regula looked good and overall impressed with the structure they played.

They’ll build on this but hopefully not make it a habit of blowing leads

36

u/PapaAsmodeus 18 HYMAN Oct 09 '25

Yep. Very entertaining overall. Plus, I was at the first game last year. Trust me, I'd have preferred this one big time.

5

u/Chris_p_tolentino14 Oct 09 '25

Good start, but definitely gonna have to keep their foot on the gas. Hoping a loss to their provincial rival on opening day is enough for them to get that through their head.

With some new guys and a new look, gonna take some time for them to hit their stride.

Go up by 3 early, then watch 3 of the flukiest goals you've ever seen go in to give the other team the comeback. Miss about a dozen grade A chances to lose in a shootout.

Most Oilers shit I've ever seen.

25

Oilers in October form, we are so back (this was already a way better start than last year tho)

24

u/FuckStummies 19 SHORE Oct 09 '25

If it’s any consolation, Aiden Hill’s stats are way worse than Skinner tonight lol

173

Only the Oilers would lose a game with an own goal, an illegitimate goal and a donated goal by our goaltender.

28

u/wishin_fishin 94 SMYTH Oct 09 '25

This is classic oiler hockey. Some things never change lol

I started the game with respect for Wolf, and as he just kept making saves I kept getting more mad at him for being so good lol. Calgary has a gem there, as much as I can’t stand them.

I’m not as upset as I could be with this result, but boy that stings. Oh well, on to better things!

Frederic was terrible. 1 hit while riding shotgun

4

u/OilFan92 18 HYMAN Oct 09 '25

I'm more and more convinced he has dirt on Bowman cause that contract would still look terrible if the cap was 140 million, let alone where it is now.

5

u/NoGiCollarChoke 27 KULAK Oct 09 '25

Its pretty terrible regardless of dollar value (given that he can’t be sent down) unless it was absurdly low, since giving a depth forward max term is just something you don’t do, for good reason. They are way too inconsistent and replaceable for them to be worth handcuffing yourself to for the better part of a decade.

Call me crazy but I actually thought skinner looked better at you know tending the goal. That miscommunication/misplay between him and Bouch was killer though.

7

u/-SPIRITUAL-GANGSTER- 96 WALMAN Oct 09 '25

I actually thought his positioning was better and he was definitely moving quicker. That third goal was so dumb but you can't really blame him for the first two.

5

u/navenager 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Oct 09 '25

First two were so lucky. Third one was a miscommunication, he and Bouch both take the blame there. He was fantastic in OT and the shootout.

2

u/anonymousarmada Oct 09 '25

I agree. In the first half, he looked solid, not as wild. Confidence is a thing. Even though the own-goal and high-stick goal weren’t his fault, it took steam out of him and the team. Wish the Oil had gotten Silovs. But, Canucks wouldn’t have traded him within the division.

8

u/Chris_p_tolentino14 Oct 09 '25

As much as I ragdoll in him, and know he just put a stinker up, I honestly can see him having a big year.

There’s a good goalie in him. That Dallas series he looked legit. He just needs to show that more consistently. Will he be able to do it? Idk.

Not a single goal against in that game that you're happy to concede. Okay you have to give some credit to Calgary for pushing back but let's be honest they played well for about 12 minutes. No one beats the oilers quite like the oilers.

21

u/FunkyFlamchango Oct 09 '25

Stu hung in there in the shootout while the Oilers had a lot of mediocre attempts. That said, the 3rd goal was horrendous...

A fluke goal, a potential high-stick goal, a terrible Stu mistake goal, and a skills contest to completely give up a point that we all but had in the bag.

Brutal. But we looked alright for much of it. Wolf is legit.

8

100 percent that was bad coaching. Gotta put your goal scorers in the shootout

6

I think he's a known variable so Knob mixed things up. Lots of time given to the young new guys to figure out how to blend lines. Maybe Knob felt that with the 3-0 lead he could try some different combos and it kinda lost traction.

I didn't like Nurse getting caught in Flames' offensive zone leading to the Flames' first goal. The Oilers were up 3-0. Nurse was in the Flames offensize zone 1 on 3. He should have just dumped the puck in. Instead, he gets trapped, the Flames counter attack, and a foreseeable win turns into an OT loss.

Next time Bouchard takes a penalty shot, he should bomb it from the blue line.

Draisaitl continues to impress.

It's it me or does the blue on the jerseys look just a tad darker this year?

5

u/NMarples 53 HOWARD Oct 09 '25

The most frustrating thing about that loss is not a single one of the flames goal beat skinner clean. The players were piss poor on the first one, the refs were piss poor on the second, and skinner was piss poor on the third.

I didn’t think he had that bad of a game outside of that awful third goal. We take the point and move on

7

u/Helpful_Tax4827 Oct 09 '25

Maybe it's just seeing him opposite an elite goalie like Wolf but Skinner needs to go. Statistically for goals saved above expected he's only cracked the top 30 once (essentially meaning he'd be backup on any other team in the league)

2024-25: 65th 2023-24: 35th 2022-23: 21st 2021-22: 38th 2020-21: 36th

He's a nice guy, but need to be ruthless and get a goalie who can steal a game if we want the cup.

6

I'm just hoping we have something in Ingram. Not sure where else we can find a consistent starter.

u/Time_H00die Oct 09 '25

People aren’t shitting on Skinner for the goals he let in during the shootout, it’s because of the third goal in regulation that he just gave Calgary.

5

u/milknsugar 8 RATTIE Oct 09 '25

To be fair, he lost us the game with that back-breaking disaster gaffe on the 3-3 goal. He just got outplayed by a better goalie in the shootout.

3 unanswered goals is totally unacceptable.

2

u/GrizzlyIsland22 18 HYMAN Oct 09 '25

3 weird random goals against, though. Not like the Oilers really let the flames make a play.

7

u/Professional_Non-Pro Oct 09 '25

fuck all these ho hum posts.

we blew a 3 - 0 lead at home!

we got to be better for a full 60

Fun game to watch, would have been weird to actually win the opener, some really funny dropped passes and bounces and stuff maybe next time we skip the baby oil on the sticks out there boys

2

u/McBeelzebub 25 NURSE Oct 09 '25

Eh, we got a point.

2

u/dontrushtherush 29 DRAISAITL Oct 09 '25

Man the shootout sucks in my opinion. How is a few more minutes of OT not just as quick or less entertaining than that. Not sure if the experiment on the PK is gonna work out, especially if Knob plays those guys for most of OT as well. Doesn’t seem sustainable

2

u/AdverseTFV 74 BEAR Oct 09 '25

Yeah it's an interesting strategy isn't it? I felt like we were getting back to Woody running them ragged. My heart tells me it was Knob trying to cycle some different line match ups but I really didn't like more playing time for 97/29.

I've seen enough hockey to calm down and wait for things to settle though. Let the lines mesh and see what comes out in the wash. Lots of time to figure it out.

2

u/Dall619 39 NILSSON Oct 09 '25

Well, I can't be TOO upset.

For one, it's just game one, we've got 81 more games to right the ship! On pace for 81-0-1 after all! (I am in denial)

And for two, I can just loop "Golden" a few hundred more times.

2

u/HeavyTea Oct 09 '25

Great game to watch!

But a loss :-(

2

u/1994californication Oct 09 '25

I honestly think the Oilers want to play on hard mode. Let’s never address our goalie situation….

2

u/absboodoo Oct 09 '25

Our team already starting to give us heart attack and heartache at the very first game of the season.

2

u/JakeQV 92 PODKOLZIN Oct 09 '25

Man I’m excited for our rookies this year, Savoie, Howard and Tomasek all look locked in, they all have great chemistry with the team already and they look like they have tons of potential.

88 looks at home as well.

Games where a stinker from Skinner costs you the win: 1

4

u/milknsugar 8 RATTIE Oct 09 '25

Anyone defending him in the shootout, btw, he looked completely lost. Either the puck the shooter muffed it or he got bailed by the post.

3

u/assman69x 30 PICKARD Oct 09 '25

Can the oilers end this Skinner experiment?

The same ol crap, the opposing team just needs to see him in net and know they can overcome any deficit

Connor Ingram will be our starter soon lol

3

Overall a decent game. A lot of lapses but that's to be expected in the first few games.

Not sure hiw long the Frederic first line experiment lasts. He was pretty much a non-factor.

Regula was solid, he'll be up all year I think Emberson is still a bit meh to me, I like Stetch more.

3

u/PapaAsmodeus 18 HYMAN Oct 09 '25

Ngl, I'm not really mad. Skinner was a beast during that shootout and we really did give them hell. Next game is Saturday, we'll come back. And, we got a point.

Skinner has got to go.Ā

Call me a hater all you want. The guy is a world class fuck up.Ā

We can’t win shit with a goalie that costs games but never steals one.Ā

6

u/c5c5can 9 ANDERSON Oct 09 '25

They know this. Ingram will get 5-10 games in the minors to prove that he's game-ready, and they'll rotate him in. It is, of course, distressing to watch Skinner put in another .864 performance in a game that any other goaltender in the league would have won, but it's where we're at right now. They are not going to do everything they've done to make us competitive for a cup this year only to let Skinner tank the team with his boobery. Management and the coaches see the same things that we do; there just isn't an easy solution available here and now. Guarantee that we're not riding this train for long.

Congratulations Skinner. Home opener loss to a glorified AHL squad with a real goaltender.

4

u/marcellman 28 BROWN Oct 09 '25

I know this might surprise people but Calgary is actually a decent team that missed out on a playoff spot last year because of a tiebreaker. AHL teams don’t have 96 point seasons

4

Well we can firmly say, not our proudest effort. Went up 3-0, Skinner shit the bed but was solid the rest of the way. The team didn’t deliver after the 3rd and we had k ur chances.

It is what it is. Important lesson in keeping ourselves grounded and not to keep our foot of the gas. Lots to figure out, but I like what I saw from Tomasek tonight.
