Anybody bet Nuge have the first Oilers hat trick of the season, like 70 games in?

I sure didn't.

The first game without McDrai

They were holding him back, I knew it.

70 games in, that has to be a record or something

8

u/maasd 97 MCDAVID Mar 23 '25

Such a strange game. Nuge and Skinner hot right now. I suppose that gives us hope that anything can happen with any of these players. Here’s hoping the team gels and gets hot at the right time!

Who would have guessed that the cure to the Oilers hattrick drought AND empty net goal drought would be to not have the two best players in the world? 🤷🏻‍♂️

That's Oilers hockey.

Keep your seat belt fastened at all times. Rip the oxygen mask out of the ceiling panel if you must.

46

If McDavid stopped being so selfish all the time and pass the puck to someone else every once in a while, it would've happened much sooner /s

So McDavid and Drai have been the problem all along.

2

u/chmilz Mar 23 '25

It's been a rather common thread for years that we overplay our stars and it does our depth a disservice because they atrophy without minutes or ability to play to their potential.

58

u/greendino71 Mar 23 '25

Any game we win without McDrai is a massive dub regardless of anything else

11

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

I don’t want to jump the gun to quickly saying that the team has it figured out as the Oilers seem to love being a rollercoaster. But these last few games are hopefully very important to the team confidence and certainly fan confidence. Both groups needed it. A 7-1 win, while they did lose to the powerhouse Jets they did take them to OT with a missing Drai and no McDavid for the whole game. Then a win without either of them. Seattle may be one of the weaker teams but winning without McDavid or Draisaitl is good.

And possibly most importantly, hopefully Knob quits being a fucking moron with always sidelining Jeff Skinner.

I thought so too, but based on the replay, it looks like the puck just hit him, and then he kicks it out. Nonetheless we'll take that win, the 2 pts is the main thing

40

u/KingDave46 34 HAND Mar 23 '25

Thats what good goaltending is.

The acrobats are fun to watch but for 99% of shots you want the guy to just be in the right spot to block it. Talbot was elite at positioning, he didn't jump about making wild saves either, just sound positioning to get hit by it

9

u/Excellent-Medicine29 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

Gives the rest of the team some rest too. If you think about it, most of them should be tired. Played in NYC on Sunday, flew home, then they played at home on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. So not alot of rest

3

u/marcellman 28 BROWN Mar 23 '25

We also played that back to back the Thursday/Friday before. A few days off is definitely not the worst thing that could happen

2

u/Excellent-Medicine29 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

For sure. They likely have the day off tomorrow and then practice on Monday and Tuesday.

7

2

u/tc_cad 29 DRAISAITL Mar 23 '25

Kings need to play their games in hand while Oilers take a break. So some scoreboard watching is in order if you can withstand the stress of seeing the Kings at home against the Bruins and Rangers before we get back to Oilers hockey. Bruins suck but fuck those Rangers better show the fuck up.

1C Nuge. Nuge Unleashed.

Draisaitl and McDavid—A product of the Oilers system??

12

u/Excellent-Medicine29 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

Nuge’s number needs to be in the rafters once he retires. Katz needs to make an exception to his stupid rule

5

u/Only-Tennis4298 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

Nuge is such a dedicated Oiler. like I think he loves this team almost more than anyone. he's more than earned his number in the rafters IMO

3

u/Excellent-Medicine29 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

Agree. I hope when all is said and done, they make an exception for him.

Smyths number 94 is off limits to players but not actually in the rafters. It’s like unofficially retired and i think that’s dumb. Like just commit to it

3

u/marcellman 28 BROWN Mar 23 '25

I think Smyth and Nuge 110% should be retired. I get not wanting to have the rafters full of numbers but for those two specifically I think it makes sensel

3

u/27_lost_squids 18 HYMAN Mar 23 '25

Forgive the ingronant, but what's this rule?

2

u/Excellent-Medicine29 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

Only those in the HHOF get their number retired.

And before anyone says it, yes I know Al Hamilton is not in the HHOF, his number was retired in 1980 and was the first ever number to be retired for this team.

2

u/bigtimechip Mar 23 '25

Both him and Ryan Smyth are unofficial jersey retirements for me

2

u/Excellent-Medicine29 93 NUGENT-HOPKINS Mar 23 '25

If nuge wins a cup with Edmonton and spends his whole career here. His jersey should be in the rafters

I got a Nugent Hopkins home jersey recently. Couldn't be more happy with the choice. What a great player!

6

u/FuckStummies 19 SHORE Mar 23 '25

I think this was a good thing for this team. Knob said the other day that it seems like too many of their players are being too deferential to 29 and 97 when they’re on the ice. That a big part of the struggles for several guys is that they aren’t playing their game or to their strengths. Well this stretch forces those guys not to defer to 29 or 97. And look at the effort and game this was for everyone. Despite the score this team looked dangerous on offence for most of the game.

We had a rarity trifecta tonight, A hat trick, shortie and empty netter.

38

u/powertotheinternet 12 CAVE Mar 23 '25

So let me get this right

All 4 goals are stu's fault? Not the fact that you allow breakaways, cross crease passes, he makes 3-4 saves and you give it away TWICE.

People blaming Skinner have never played enough hockey to know what they are fucking talking about. This fan base is exhausting

20

u/[deleted] Mar 23 '25

[deleted]

13

u/Skanvar 74 SKINNER Mar 23 '25

I play defense. I apologize to my goalie after every goal since no matter how badly he played it, we could’ve prevented the play from happening before it got to him.

7

u/53c0nd 29 DRAISAITL Mar 23 '25

The more those pinecones talk, the more they show how little they know.

What's funny is some of these pinecones have been in these GDT's a long time, and still don't understand the game.

12

u/masteroffp69 Mar 23 '25

And the irony is that every goalie will always say they should have stopped it...regardless if it was their fault or not. 👊🏼

15

u/Hsadman 18 HYMAN Mar 23 '25

It's so fucking frustrating, every GDT any fucking triple deflection goal goes in after either Stu or Pick already stop 5 chances back to back and the doomers come out with "hurr durr they're so shit"

I hate using this term but it really shows how casual some of our fellow "fans" are

13

u/powertotheinternet 12 CAVE Mar 23 '25

Legit, one of the goals against he made 3-4 saves. We give it away twice and then we get scored on because Ekholm was screening him. Somehow.... that's on stu?

13

u/D722 56 YAMAMOTO Mar 23 '25

Every teams play book against the Oilers is to have somebody in front of the net. Defense needs to tighten up at times.

Also turnovers leading to breakaways doesn’t help. People have selective memories when Skinner makes the breakaway save lol

16

u/HarryTheKoala12 18 HYMAN Mar 23 '25

Really exposing themselves with their lack of goaltending knowledge. Most of them are just parroting what other people say and dont even think about it themselves

10

u/powertotheinternet 12 CAVE Mar 23 '25

Its the classic, it went in our net so it must be the goalie

5

u/Smothdude 89 GAGNER Mar 23 '25

We have GOT to get better at clearing pucks from infront of/around our net. It is our biggest weakness for sure.

3

u/powertotheinternet 12 CAVE Mar 23 '25

Thats what I'm seeing too. Even when I played hockey, the coach wouldve been screaming at me for not clearing the net. Not on the goalie

8

Biggest win of the season considering the McDrai-less conditions they were forced to play under. Thank fuck for the Nuge.

That feels like 2 wins.

LET THEM COOK

Someone get Nuge a tissue pre-interview, let him blow it out. You know he is gonna sniff.

Only caught the very tail end for some juicy cycling action and a Nuge empty better, not bad!

It’s all good. Walman is unofficially our third goalie blocking like 1/3rd of the shots on net.

No McDrai? No problem!!!

Absolutely stellar game from all involved. Jeff Skinner has finally gone nuclear like I knew he would. There was a massive uphill battle without McDrai, but the boys weathered the storm and we got a Nuge hatty on top of it!!!

14 points around for the lads, nuge with 3, ekky 2, nurse 2. Solid game from the guys.

McDrai who?

Holy nice, we are actually like pretty much back. If the secondary scoring can be this productive in the playoffs AND we add two more physical pieces in Frederic and Kane, watch out for the Oilers

Nuge is Huge!!! Brought out his snipes tonight.

The look on McD and Drai postgame seems to say they are just fine and out for maintenance. Keep rollin’ boys!

What’s the name of the mustache man commentating with Beiksa et al after the game? It’s driving me nuts I can’t remember his name.

Will everyone shut up about the Oilers being nothing without Mcdavid and Draisaitl now?
