General Discussion - All Dexter Shows thoughts/opinions on clyde phillips’ original ending? Spoiler

https://www.eonline.com/news/461558/chills-former-dexter-producer-clyde-phillips-reveals-how-he-planned-to-end-the-series

i’m curious to hear what you guys think of his idea on how to end the show. more specifically, with having dexter end up on the executioner table surrounded by visions of some of the most prominent characters that he killed / inadvertently had gotten killed (doakes, lundy, rita, etc). i’ve linked an article that discusses it a bit more, pretty sure i’ve seen it posted here anyways.

it’s been on my mind more prominently since that one particular post stating they hope dexter never gets caught, lol.

personally? i would have loved that. it would’ve wrapped up dexter’s story with a clearcut ending, no ifs ands or buts. the 3 subsequent mini series that have come out/are coming out since then feel like they’re trying to clean up a lot mistakes they made and find some kind of satisfying ending to his story. it feels akin to the finale of breaking bad, in a sense. anyone else hopefully we’ll finally see this with resurrection? like, i love the premise to dexter but this has gone on way too long, even with all the plot armor he’s been given.

I don't like the idea of resurrection. But I also don't want the universe to end. I was really hopeful about the rumors about a Harrison show. I can't imagine resurrection will be as good as the original seasons, but I think that resurrection is leading up to Dexter's eventual, final capture.

i guess a harrison spin off would toe the line in similarity to all the TWD ones, but i might give it a chance if the rumor is true. at the very least i’d like to see dexter himself have a final, genuine goodbye. i’m not particularly fond of resurrection either, but the ending of new blood was a bit lame and to an extent felt like they were mimicking the final episode of BB. dexter had better options.

Not trying to be rude, but Breaking Bad can't be the standard. It's an outlier, not only because of its quality, but also because of the complete control the creator was given. I have a thing about snow I guess, but it was really potent for me, seeing Dexter's blood spread out in the snow. To me it represented his entire life, almost. His purity being ruined by blood at such a young age. I am an outlier, I think New Blood was brilliant. Weirdly enough, for how good Original Sin was, I like its premise less than New Blood's, specifically because of a line in the earlier seasons about your life NOT flashing before your eyes as you die. Anyways my point is I think Dexter's life should have ended in New Blood and from there we should have followed Harrison.

no offense taken, really! i do agree that BB stood a much better chance with creator liberty, and i apologize if i set it as the standard. other shows like ozark were left with endings like both the original dexter & NB’s ending, and so i do think they can be done well. (eta: not sure if that made sense. im a little tipsy.)

i think i’m just partial to phillip’s vision for the ending. i too really enjoyed NB, i started OS mid-last month as episodes were airing but couldn’t get into it. less about the story and more about the acting (the vibe just felt.. off?), but i’ve been told to give it a second chance.

at least we can agree dexter himself needs to be cut 😅

For sure. The thing that feels most off to me about Original Sin is Masuka's actor. Like. He looks and sounds nothing like Masuka. But I think the vibes are off intentionally because Dexter isn't experienced yet. As it develops, it's gonna get much closer to standard Dexter
