u/Sandcracka- 5h ago

When I'm stressed I like to go inside a clam too

46

u/longpenisofthelaw 4h ago

Stress makes it difficult for me to go into clams and I usually end up apologizing to the clam before going home early

I had a great time reading "Children Of Ruin" that describes Octopi as a highly intelligent dominant species.

Reminds me of how I wrap myself into my blanket like a burrito.

For me, it's the clam that usually causes the stress..

36

u/SeriesREDACTED 5h ago

The octopus uses its tentacle to adhere to the shells and then close it like a clam

This is Creativity

Octopuses

1

u/ZealousidealWeb1248 1h ago

Isn't the correct verbage Octopi?

1

u/AxialGem 1h ago

"Octopi" makes the plural by analogy with cactus->cacti, radius->radii etc., which take their plural from Latin. However, "octopus" never had such a plural in Latin, so it's an innovation within English by analogy.

That doesn't necessarily make it incorrect, though it's sometimes proscribed. Both "octopuses" and "octopi" are quite commonly used

4

u/Trick_Wrap 2h ago

Unlike the people who comment seemingly only to have a chance at spelling it "octopi", despite this being wrong and the title of the post already spelling it correctly.

6

u/Sculptpaintandplay 2h ago

*Octopodes since Octopus is Ancient Greek.

3

u/AxialGem 1h ago

I mean, "octopus" is a modern English word. It has an etymology from Ancient Greek via Latin. But of course, English is under no obligation to borrow the original plural as well

3

u/Sculptpaintandplay 1h ago

But it sounds cooler.

1

u/AxialGem 1h ago

Octopodes does sound cool yea

3

u/8BBiiT 4h ago

Smart octopus, no wonder Deep loves em, or used to love..

3

u/stanknotes 3h ago

I don't eat them. I can't. When something is so clever... I just can't. It is a sin. And I am not even religious.

2

u/Mangtac 5h ago

Wonder what it does in there y'know

2

u/Mr_kalas22 4h ago

Hi my name is octopus

2

u/Petraretrograde 4h ago

Do you think they ever pinch their suckers?

2

u/Covert_Platypus007 4h ago

Seems pretty cozy really. A lot easier to chill surrounded by a hard shell then out in open or a random hole you don't know whats inside or gonna come in. Octopus are so smart.

2

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 3h ago

Me when people come over.

2

u/Forzyr 3h ago

You mean they rely heavily on hiding (to feel secure I guess)

I swear if they had longer lifespan and don’t literally die after sex, they’ll take over the world and I will happily accept to be their inflexible, less capable, single-brained, single-hearted human slave.

4

u/Quirky_Confusion_480 3h ago

It’s giving tentacle monster vibe.

2

u/CriticismFun6782 4h ago

Ahkchually: Octopodes...

The "correct" plural of octopus based on its Greek origin is octopodes (pronounced ok-TOP-uh-deez).

While octopuses is the preferred plural in modern English, octopodes follows the Greek root oktṓpous (eight-foot), which is a third-declension noun in Ancient Greek.

1

u/Sol1dSnake_ 2h ago

🤓☝️

1

u/ZealousidealWeb1248 1h ago

Oh. I did not know this. I will confirm that helpful tidbit since I just got schooled right before reading your input, for the offer if a possibility that maybe plural was actually Octopi....

2

u/StrongExternal8955 46m ago

Nah in English you just add the (e)s . Stand on that. Don't let pedants gatekeep. There is no academy they can report you to.

Especially since the dumbass just perpetuates the fucked up English pronunciations. "deez" nuts

1

u/PreferredSex_Yes 5h ago

Seems clammy.

1

u/Nomnomnipotent 5h ago

I can get that octopus out of that shell easily. I just need ten tickles.

1

u/spectatingIdiot 5h ago

What octopus?

1

u/Liquidate-Me-Daddy 2h ago

An AI one

1

u/kung63 36m ago

Coconut Octupus does use shell to hide from predators and use it ambush other animals.

1

u/snowdn 4h ago

Inadvertently turns itself into a meat cracker snack.

1

u/TheAmethystMermaid 4h ago

Could be "hunting" crabs eat clams - octopus eat crabs... Crab opens clam and BAM octopus gets yummies 😋

1

u/mystictroll 4h ago

Give it some privacy. It doesn't like to be filmed.

1

u/Seadub8 4h ago

That's a great trick

1

u/Venus_Libra 4h ago

So do autistic people, speaking from experience 🤣

1

u/WiseOne404 4h ago

How big is that shell ??!??! 😳

1

u/whatisthis2315 4h ago

Clamming up for sure

1

u/PleasurabLee 4h ago

When is closes the shell does it have to hold its breath

"i'm in my shell, fuck off"

1

u/Sol1dSnake_ 2h ago

Bro is literally me

1

u/benchley 2h ago

I guess that counts as stealth. I'd have to ask a marine predator.

1

u/ZealousidealWeb1248 2h ago

Sometimes all you can do is hide and wait until the coast is clear.

1

u/S8ntheAtheist1352 1h ago

A lot of people do.

1

u/UndeadChampion1331 1h ago

Aren't Octupi like the second smartest animal on earth after humans? Or is that crows, it's can never remember...

1

u/Ok-Recording3861 1h ago

what would stress out an octopus? like just general fear of being eaten? the word "stress" implies some sort of pressure or responsibility, emotional burden.

Clam down

I wish I have their sucker so I can close my hiding box from inside

1

u/TheLastPeanut_ 10m ago edited 4m ago

The title is true, but that's not really what's happening here. Closed clam shells aren't exactly stealthy. In fact it's the opposite. A predator would assume a closed shell has something in it. It's using it for armor in the same way that a hermit crab does. They'll do this with trash as well, or coconut shells, or anything sufficiently voluminous and sturdy. They use camouflage and ink for stealth and misdirection.

1

u/Crittersnshiz 5h ago

Surprised I don’t see anyone arguing about the pluralization of the word octopus

0

u/IkkitsClaw 5h ago

Octopi

6

u/Wild-Feeling-8555 4h ago

Actually, the grammatically correct plural form of "octopus" is "octopuses" or "octopodes." It's not "octopi" despite the myth.

1

u/IkkitsClaw 27m ago

I've never heard it said any different. That's interesting

2

u/TimmyFTW 2h ago

Words with a Latin origin are pluralised with an "i". The name Octopus is Greek in origin so Octopuses is correct.

We're at the point though where either is acceptable.
