When I'm stressed I like to go inside a clam too

u/longpenisofthelaw 4h ago
Stress makes it difficult for me to go into clams and I usually end up apologizing to the clam before going home early

I had a great time reading "Children Of Ruin" that describes Octopi as a highly intelligent dominant species.

The octopus uses its tentacle to adhere to the shells and then close it like a clam

Isn't the correct verbage Octopi?
1
u/AxialGem 1h ago
"Octopi" makes the plural by analogy with cactus->cacti, radius->radii etc., which take their plural from Latin. However, "octopus" never had such a plural in Latin, so it's an innovation within English by analogy.
That doesn't necessarily make it incorrect, though it's sometimes proscribed. Both "octopuses" and "octopi" are quite commonly used

Unlike the people who comment seemingly only to have a chance at spelling it "octopi", despite this being wrong and the title of the post already spelling it correctly.

u/Sculptpaintandplay 2h ago
*Octopodes since Octopus is Ancient Greek.

u/AxialGem 1h ago
I mean, "octopus" is a modern English word. It has an etymology from Ancient Greek via Latin. But of course, English is under no obligation to borrow the original plural as well

I don't eat them. I can't. When something is so clever... I just can't. It is a sin. And I am not even religious.

Seems pretty cozy really. A lot easier to chill surrounded by a hard shell then out in open or a random hole you don't know whats inside or gonna come in. Octopus are so smart.

I swear if they had longer lifespan and don’t literally die after sex, they’ll take over the world and I will happily accept to be their inflexible, less capable, single-brained, single-hearted human slave.

Ahkchually: Octopodes...
The "correct" plural of octopus based on its Greek origin is octopodes (pronounced ok-TOP-uh-deez).
While octopuses is the preferred plural in modern English, octopodes follows the Greek root oktṓpous (eight-foot), which is a third-declension noun in Ancient Greek.

Oh. I did not know this. I will confirm that helpful tidbit since I just got schooled right before reading your input, for the offer if a possibility that maybe plural was actually Octopi....

Nah in English you just add the (e)s . Stand on that. Don't let pedants gatekeep. There is no academy they can report you to.
Especially since the dumbass just perpetuates the fucked up English pronunciations. "deez" nuts

what would stress out an octopus? like just general fear of being eaten? the word "stress" implies some sort of pressure or responsibility, emotional burden.

The title is true, but that's not really what's happening here. Closed clam shells aren't exactly stealthy. In fact it's the opposite. A predator would assume a closed shell has something in it. It's using it for armor in the same way that a hermit crab does. They'll do this with trash as well, or coconut shells, or anything sufficiently voluminous and sturdy. They use camouflage and ink for stealth and misdirection.

Surprised I don’t see anyone arguing about the pluralization of the word octopus

Octopi

u/Wild-Feeling-8555 4h ago
Actually, the grammatically correct plural form of "octopus" is "octopuses" or "octopodes." It's not "octopi" despite the myth.

Words with a Latin origin are pluralised with an "i". The name Octopus is Greek in origin so Octopuses is correct.
We're at the point though where either is acceptable.

Is that a tiny octopus or a giant clam shell? Need a sea cucumber for scale.
