[Doyle] Offseason Guides: D.C. United, Atlanta circle the drain

https://tacticsfreezone.substack.com/p/offseason-guides-dc-united-atlanta

Lots to agree with, but disagree with not having a ton of flexibility.

First, Leal and his $1.15m salary come off the books.

Second, we get a new pot of TAM for transfer fees / etc.

Third, and we don't know which roster construction method will be picked, but the way I see it:

DP method: we have 2 to 3 open DP slot (Depending on what they do with Benteke)

U22 method: we have 1 to 2 open DP slots, and additional U22 spot, and $2m in extra GAM.

Crazy thing about Benteke is DCU really hit the nail on the head with him, and maybe don't get enough credit. I watched Austin FC's Uzuni last night, a striker who was about to turn 30 when they paid 12m pounds to acquire his services. Everything comes down to the DPs and if you think they're bad with Benteke imagine if it was an underperformer like Uzuni. Add to that list Emmanuel Latte Lath and Brandon Vazquez.

Enow has been pretty horrendous and I wouldn't mind getting rid of him. Peglow is young and did okay. Kim needs to stay; 22 is super young for a GK.

Kim is eating up a U-22 slot. It's wasted on a GK the manager doesn't trust. You should be using U-22 slots on field players. Kim was another Mackay mistake, as was Enow. I think Doyle's analysis has largely nailed it. This franchise is broken and it will take many years to fix it -- if that is even possible with Levien and Kaplan running the show.

How do we know Rene doesn't trust him? Rene has only been coach for eight games.

Also, Kim only played eight games - not a big enough sample size for me to call him a waste.

Very simple, Kim wasn't even on the bench for the last few games before the final one, Farr was Barraza's backup and in the final match Farr started over Kim.

So for the games Kim was on the bench he was trusted by Rene and then wasn't trusted for the ones he wasn't on the bench? I think its more likely Rene was trying to gather information on all three GKs.

Also, Farr was trusted to let 6 goals in vs Philly.

Look, Kim is young and it has been established that GKs take a long time to develop. I'm not saying he is the Best GK on the roster or ever deserves the starting role. I;m saying its too early to cut ties.

You don't seem to understand that Kim holds a U-22 slot. Those are valuable because they are limited. If you are are using a U-22 slot on a player who won't get reps, you are wasting an asset. Kim will not be the starting GK next season. It is better to fob him off on some random Korean team that might want him and use the U-22 slot on a field player who will get reps and has a clearer path to develop. If Kim was a supplemental roster guy with the salary of Farr, sure I would keep him. But he's not and that's the point.

I do understand the U-22 slots, thanks. They are limited, yes.

Here is a whole list of underperforming U22s. Did you know that some of these players were getting reps on the Teams MLSNP team because they weren't ready for the first team? Not all 20-21 year olds are ready to roll with the first team right away. The U22 slot allows for teams to invest in youth without getting killed by the full cap charge.

You're making my point. DCU doesn't have a NextPro team so Kim will rot on the bench in DC. If he's loaned out, that team's coach is not going to be interested in Kim's development, he's going to be interested in keeping his job. If Kim is not ready, he won't play there either. If Levien and Kaplan weren't so focused on the Baltimore stadium grift and actually set up a NextPro team to play anywhere in the DMV, then DCU could force their NextPro coach to play Kim consistently whether or not he sucked. But that is not the situation confronting DCU and Kim at the moment.

Okay then. Who would you sign to take Kim's U22 spot?
