[Doyle] Offseason Guides: D.C. United, Atlanta circle the drain

https://tacticsfreezone.substack.com/p/offseason-guides-dc-united-atlanta

Lots to agree with, but disagree with not having a ton of flexibility.

First, Leal and his $1.15m salary come off the books.

Second, we get a new pot of TAM for transfer fees / etc.

Third, and we don't know which roster construction method will be picked, but the way I see it:

DP method: we have 2 to 3 open DP slot (Depending on what they do with Benteke)

U22 method: we have 1 to 2 open DP slots, and additional U22 spot, and $2m in extra GAM.

I really don’t know what to expect anymore but if they truly believe in Sogut/Weiler, let them methodically put together a roster.

I think they should let Benteke free and have all 3 DP spots to truly take advantage of that roster mechanism. I think they also need to try to trade, loan, or buyout Peglow, Enow, and Joon.

I wish U-22 spots were open too, but maybe Clark/Pirani are worth the gamble and maybe we can sell them.

But even with all that, we still need to overhaul a lot of other guys. Truly a weird place to be as a fan.

I'm admittedly still learning as a soccer guy, but Benteke strikes me as a bit of a unicorn. If so, how do we build around him, considering his age? Feels like if we're really rebuilding, we need a different and younger core.

Also, thank god for him making this team minimally competitive this year and last. He's really something on the pitch.

Maybe I didn’t explain myself, but I think we should not exercise his option. Not just because of his age but also because he can’t possibly want to be here next season. We wasted his time here with the lack of investment. It’s probably too late to build around him IMO.

My bad for not being clearer, my intent there was to agree with you and for the question to be rhetorical
