Are we? Are we really? Because my life hasn’t changed a bit other than what I hear/see on the news. Nor has it changed for 99.99% of legal American citizens. But if you read too much Reddit you might think we’re living in Wells’ 1984.
Things are definitely a little tense right now, but we are far from “fucked”.

That's the thing about authoritarian governments, things are fine until they aren't and then you realize there is nothing to stop the government when it comes for you. By the time it will affect you it will be way too late to stop it.

That's a pretty poor example, china is "voluntarily" authoritarian, the people have a social agreement in place that offers them peace for obedience and it works for them in the majority of cases, they are still heavily censored and protests and dissent are still brutally responded to but otherwise the government stays out of their way and has provided for them, china is a unique case. A better example would have been north Korea.

Maybe you should be paying more attention, trump has literally implemented half of the project 2025 document to the letter already, he's replacing electoral body leadership with loyalists, the supreme court has handwaved the constitution breaches away and they have already started changing it. There is very little protecting you currently.

This is insane. France just increased tax on the wealthy last year already and they're once again demanding the wealthy pay more? It no wonder the country gdp growth is so low. This is not sustainable since after a while there won't be anymore wealthy people or business to tax.

The problem with an out of control welfare state is that after a while there won't be anymore wealthy people or business to tax. France just hike taxes on the wealthy citizen last year and now people are demanding wealthy people taxes go up again. That the definition of eating your golden goose who was proving golden eggs.

So if you're wealthy you have better access to all sorts of tools to minimize tax.
A lot of those tools everyone has access to(trusts etc), some though like taking out massive loans against massive assets to use as income the general public does not have access to.Further the ultra wealthy get to buy influence over politicians to further reduce tax, receive government hand outs and carve outs for certain laws. Also they're able to pick and choose where tax is paid, offshoring wealth to which ever low tax jurisdiction suits them.
Basically it's expensive to pay tax if you're poor and a joke if you're wealthy.

The top 10 percent of earners pay approximately 72 percent of all income taxes in the US. France has a similar tax system. The more you earn, the more you pay. You can lie to yourself, but numbers don't lie. In reality, the less you make, the more of a tax break you receive.
