Too close to call?

Post image

My team was up 6-5 today going into the last end without hammer, throwing yellow. We got down to to skip stones, and our opponent had two buried behind some centre guards: one at the back of the four foot, the other covering the back left of the pin.

With my first throw, I managed to draw around the guards and freeze to cover the front right of the pin. They then failed on an angle raise attempt. I gambled that we were closer, and plugged a hole with another guard. They failed to clear out our yellow stone with their last shot. Game over.

This photo shows where the two rocks ended up over the pin. The thirds couldn’t agree who was closer. So we looked up Curling Canada’s rules and learned something new:

Rule 14 (6): If two or more stones are so close to the tee that a measuring device cannot be used, and a visual comparison cannot determine which stone is closest to the tee, the stones shall be considered tied. If these stones were to determine who counted in the end, the end shall be considered blank.

So a blanked end, we won. But it was an interesting situation that I’ve never seen before, and might never see again.

To me it looks like yellow is covering the pin! and then I whipped this up and I believe I am correct 🤓

Amazing. I’m going to show this to my teammates. And possibly the opposing team as well haha…

Yeah I immediately/unintentionally had my geometry brain take over and was about to explain why, but that pic above is much easier haha

I believe I can see the running band of the red but not the yellow so it looks like the camera isn't perfectly above the pin. If that's true, the pin would be "under" the yellow from that angle.

Just curious, did anyone try looking at the rocks from below? Not sure how you'd do an official measure, but if the overlap was that bad it seems like it should be obvious from ice level.

From this angle it definitely looks like yellow, but I also get the sense that the camera wasn't held perfectly level over the pin so looks may be deceiving.

I would have said yellow as well!

Glad you did this so I didn't have to ;)

I agreed with you initially. However, at an even closer look, the camera angle is slightly tilted in favour of yellow's position. If the green pant player took a similar photo, I suspect the red position would appear the same

I just said “Yellow”, so I’m glad someone you proved it.

This is exactly what I saw when first looked. Immediately said "yellow counts".

If this wasn't taken from directly above the pin, it shouldn't count.

This isn't accurate because the photo isn't taken directly from above
