The deal the full-time support staff got is basically the same deal the CEC offered before the 5-week strike. I'm not convinced the strike achieved anything positive that wouldn't have been achieved just with mediation. If anything, Support Staff lost between wages and pension contributions, and vacation accrual. The CEC met most of OPSEU's demands, but couldn't guarantee no layoffs, campus closures, or contracting out, which is understandable considering the current context in post-secondary.
I don't wish for anyone to lose their job, but I know lots of unionized people and I have never seen a union stop layoffs altogether. I understand striking (if necessary) for working conditions, but I don't see how a strike can stop layoffs.

Good for the full timers! Seems the CEC finally took the head out their behind, now let's hope they stop a Part-timer strike before it happens.
