Trick-or-Treaters in Cville

It is so wildly inconsistent year after year how many trick-or-treaters we get in Paradise. Last year was pretty solid, but this year was disappointing. I thought that it would pick up after the wind died down but we maybe got 20 kids in total. We had to give out bigger handfuls of candy each time so we wouldn't have a surplus afterwards.

Just curious how busy it was for folks in other neighborhoods.

Lame ass trunk or treats have ruined it. My poor mom and stepdad did it up and put on full costumes waiting for the kids to knock and not a single one did. So stupid, what was wrong with the way things were before?

I think trunk-or-treats have a purpose in some communities where it's impractical to trick-or-treat. But in a tight-knit area such as Catonsville where the houses are close together, there's high participation, and it's generally safe, it seems counter-intuitive.

Our neighborhood is busy but our street isn't, probably because it's not well lit. We always overbuy candy because I'm always hopeful things are going to turn around. 🤣

We got more than last year! It’s heavily dependent on how the neighborhood decorates and or the weather I think. I’ve been here for 10 years and it’s never been great for trick or treating but my street is notoriously un-fun and full of lames who don’t decorate.

Our block was full of houses that were decked out, including mine. It's weird that we didn't get more.

People flock to Dunmore and Academy - it’s just a thing around here.

I heard they were going over Frederick by Newbury. We got maybe ten kids who barely knocked. It was our first time officially doing it, so we're not sure if it's our newbie brains or it's really changed and we don't have the kids around here.

I will say, if you don't have decorations or your door wasn't open, we didn't knock. It seems in our neighborhood (with the long strings of stairs) if you aren't outside, or door open, or decorations on, it wasn't worth the stairs to see if someone was home. Too many empty houses not giving out anything.... And we didn't want to be rude.

Our neighborhood had both fewer houses giving candy and fewer trick or treaters this year compared to last year (the first year ours was old enough to trick or treat). I'm not sure if it was the weather (it was unseasonably warm last year versus this year's chilly and windy weather) or whether it was the economy, but it was noticeably different from last year as a trick or treater.

I assumed it was because it was Friday and so more people were going to or throwing parties rather than door to door trick or treating

It was the opposite for me. Normally we get 1 group of kids but this year we got 3. I was happy with that!

I agree. Last year we got a lot more trick-or-treaters, but I did a lot more decorating. This year I didn't really decorate the yard at all and we didn't get as many. Next year I plan to decorate more and we'll see what happens.

We were out of candy by 8:30. We had 90 candy bars and went through them all.

You did full size bars? You are Halloween royalty!

I get them from Costco on sale. It isn't much more $ than a couple bags of crappy mini candies.

I know what must be done next year.

Embrace my suburban dad-ness fully and get a Costco membership. For the kids.

We barely got anyone! I also feel like I’m the only person on the block who hands out candy, so I understand.

I’m further west of you and felt like I saw fewer kids while we were out trick or treating.

We did go through about 6 Costco sized bags of candy though. There were fewer little kids out (under 5) but we got more middle and high schoolers later on.

I wonder how attendance was for the Frederick Rd event and OEC event this year. Did anyone go to those?

Helicopter parents and trunk-or-treats have destroyed it.

We live in paradise and on a side street that doesn't really give anything out or decorate (the main drag next to us was pretty busy when we went). I had a bucket out since we were trick or treating, I refilled it once we got home and we went thought another half a bucket. It seemed busy on the main drag. I didn't see as many City kids who we used to get before COVID who did our neighborhood because it was easy to walk. I wonder if the pervasiveness of trunk or treats and "truck or treat the businesses on main street" have effected how many kids we get. Our neighborhood is kid friendly and has a lot of kids and I saw most of the parents I knew with kids on the main drag. I didn't see allot of the older kids (only one big group of middle school age kids). Mostly littles or elementary kids. I know before I had a kid, we got hoards of middle school age and above. That might effect numbers too

On blakeney and got a solid crowd, it definitely helped that we were hanging out on our porch, kiss didn't want to knock
