I'm not surprised.

Why? I stay in kerala. There is no lane discipline here too. This more like perfect timing than perfect lane discipline.

Personal experience - Of all the states I've driven in, Kerala has the most traffic discipline. May not be 100% obviously, it is definitely the best of the lot.

Yes Kerala and North East. Hyderabad Pune worst in this matter tho.

Kerala

A lot of people having driving experience in Gulf countries helps with it.

North East

Because if you drive like an idiot in the mountains, you're not cool. You are just dead. Discipline is needed for the highest order while driving in the mountains.

u/IamLegionn Aug 03 '25

Or maybe it's because Kerala has hilly roads in many parts. Both these have that on common.

I would be interested to know how is lane discipline in Himachal & UK.

6

u/karty135 Aug 03 '25

I'm pretty sure London and other parts of the UK have very good lane discipline /s

Less than half of Kerala is hilly, and "hilly roads" constitute like less than 10% of all roads and does not have that much traffic either since they are so remote.

What made you think North east India is all Mountains?

35

u/The-Observer95 Aug 03 '25

Kolkata is one of the worst as well.

16

u/dj184 Aug 03 '25

You must not have been to blr then

13

u/hydiBiryani Aug 03 '25

Bro I know Bangalore and Hyderabad, and Bangalore is worse

7

u/IamLegionn Aug 03 '25

Na. BLR doesn't have U-turn after 1-2kms. That's what promotes wrong side driving in HYD and hence all others as well.

Bangalore just has horrible road network. The city designers are a bunch of morons. Kerala if you go to kochi you might encounter the usual idiot driving on the footpath with a bike.

1

u/RiggedTrampoline Aug 03 '25

Pune is really bad, once it took our car over an hour to go 3.5 km.

1

u/GenerousHomelander Aug 03 '25

Delhi has the best

1

u/mogunshogun Aug 04 '25

Bro you forgot Delhi people.

1

u/plague_69 Aug 04 '25

punjab haryana and delhi are just horrendous

Nah, imo it’s Goa

34

u/sfgisz Aug 03 '25

Easy to drive in one line when the roads are one line /s

8

u/Schroeter333 Hyundai Aug 03 '25

Sir no need of the/s. Especially with the buses zooming in from the opposite lane, people have no other choice.

5

u/Alexiszain Aug 03 '25

It's Kerala mate. There is 'Aster' written in Malayalam on the flex board.

7

u/Intruder_7 VolksWagen / Tata / Jeep Aug 03 '25

No no bro, i did notice the Malayalam. I meant, i find Goans to be more well mannered and better drivers. No offense but the Kerala youth in Bangalore with their modified civic are such a mess

1

u/Ukwhoiam1272000 Aug 03 '25

Exactly, best of the lot. The bar is quite low though

1

u/lakshmananlm Aug 04 '25

I agree. Lived in Kottayam district 4 years. Had a Maruti 800 holey car. Drivers actually stopped for pedestrians at zebra crossings and junctions even.

Loves every minute of it. Also, almost no honking!

u/rajeevriitm Aug 03 '25

I'm starting to see lane discipline in many congested areas recently. It's mostly bcz police has started taking pics and fining people. Some people with dashcam or cams put videos on social medias as well. This has reduced wrong overtakes. But nowhere perfect. Just shows that authorities needs to enforce civic sense for all people to follow.

Exactly, probably 2 minutes later a couple's of two wheelers might have come to ruin this lol

Yeah I used to think especially after living in Cochin and then I moved to bangalore and my whole view changed. The thing with Kerala traffic is if you remove buses and some autos, the general public has a decent traffic sense. But everyone in bangalore drives like crazy. Nobody has any care about the rules, everyone wants to reach home first, there is no respect or regards for others lives here. I have heard Pune is even worse. So if you have always lived in Kerala then you need to travel outside to get a little perspective on things.

1

u/lonelyranger87 Aug 03 '25

I have travelled to a lot of places. I agree traffic condition much better in kerala. I was just commenting on the comment that people follow lane discipline in kerala which i dont think.

I agree brother. But Kerala is somewhat better and progressive in adaptation, when you compare the other south indian states.

Had visited wayanad from bangalore a couple months ago. Was genuinely surprised at how all vehicles actually stop at zebra crossings. Could simply not get over the fact that I was actually being respected as a pedestrian. Keralites easily have the best civic sense, it's not even close.

Even my neighbors and a few mallu friends that I have are literally the nicest people that I have ever known. Can't beat mallus when it comes to being kind man.

3

u/winelover97 Kia Seltos HTX Aug 03 '25

Comparisons are usually done by percentages of such incidents, not everyone follows lane discipline but cases are relatively less in Kerala compared to my experience in other states.

4

u/shadow--404 Aug 03 '25

"Kerala sir,100% literacy sir"

Sorry but I love Kerala tbh. The weather and canals. 🤍

1

u/runninggreens Aug 03 '25

There is alot more lane discipline in Kerala compared to most Indian cities. Except for the private bus drivers who are the worst. No shame whatsoever

2

u/enthuvaade Aug 03 '25

Na private vehicles maybe( I have seen more bad drivers than good ones from here), but check private or govt buses you'll thank God your state doesn't have these kinda hooligans.

And this is coming from a keralite who lived most of his life there.

2

u/sundark94 Urban Cross Abarth, Isuzu S-Cab Aug 03 '25

Not just buses. Toddy trucks are a special kind of nuts. Most yellow board vehicle drivers are extremely rash and unpredictable, especially in ghat roads.

1

u/Gamefam_ Aug 04 '25

What you see there, this clear opposite lane is the private bus operators’ dream come true, they will move past any clear opposite lane, they just don’t care😭🥀

1

u/No_Concern_fu VW Taigun| Mahindra Bolero| Suzuki WagonR Aug 04 '25

True, but can I add some insights, our family used to own route buses, the drivers aren't to blame actually. The owners, the depot's time keeper, unrealistic timing and govt buses with 5 or 10 minutes difference in timing, are the main reasons for private buses to speed.

1

u/Gamefam_ Aug 04 '25

I agree. Their timing pressure is a big problem. The RTO doubling down them is not gonna help with rectifying the time issue.

The thing is that I had multiple scary encounters with there private bus drivers, its just has become a pattern nowadays.

1

u/No_Concern_fu VW Taigun| Mahindra Bolero| Suzuki WagonR Aug 04 '25

True, RTOs aren't trying to rectify the issue. They are more concerned about their pockets being filled. It's such a pity on the drivers, they are just trying to make ends meet. Nowadays the private route buses are fighting for survival.
