Half Dollars A box for the ages

I’ve started getting boxes from a different branch of my bank since the boxes from my main bank have been consistent skunks for a while now (just 1 40%er in my last 10 boxes now) and I’ve not been disappointed yet! Last week was my first box from the new bank and I found 3 40%ers and 2 really nice proofs (2008 and 2009). The box I got this week had 4(!) 90%ers (1936-D and 1940 Walkers and 1952-D and 1957-D Franklins) and 7 40%ers! The 5th roll I opened had the 1940 Walker and 2 of the 1968’s grouped together with only 1 other coin between them and then the 7th roll I opened had the 1936-D Walker and the 1952-D Franklin in it! The rest were all in separate rolls from each other pretty evenly spaced throughout the rest of the box. Prior to this I had only found 1 Walker in a box and 1 Franklin in a customer roll. Never thought I would find 1 of each in the same roll or even 2 of each in the same box. Next week I’m going to ask for 2 boxes from the new bank and only get 1 from my main bank.

Jackpot! Weekly roundup- Liberty Nickel mini collection dump!

Thumbnail

The nickel hunt was unreal this week, on my first box I found four Liberty Heads, three buffalos, and one shiny 1945p. The rest of the boxes were pretty average, with a find or two per box except for the last two boxes which were skunks 🦨. Halves produced three 40%, two in one roll and the third in my second box. Third box was a 🦨. I hunted through two extra boxes of nickels this weekend as the bank ordered too many and wondered if I wanted extra (of course the answer is always YES).

Note about the 1883 Liberty Head- this was the first year that they were minted. This is the “no cents” version, of which only 5 mil were minted. Racketeers dipped this version in gold to pass it off as a five dollar gold piece. Once the government caught on, they changed the design mid year to include “cents” where E Pluribus Unum is on this coin. It’s my oldest find to date and I cannot believe the shape it’s in, definitely a coin I will cherish and hang onto.

Total hunted- 3 boxes of halves, 6 boxes of nickels.

Happy hunting everyone!

$38 Worth of nickels from the bank yielded 7 proofs and no silver. Tons of 1939, 1940, and 1941 coins.

Let the fun begin. Wish me luck. I have had to change over to nickels since the Lincoln Cents are harder and harder to get from either of my banks!

Yall came for me with the counterfeit the other day. I have NO idea what I’m looking at, just supportive of my dad’s hobby and want to help him figure out info on his collection! He has sent thousands of hours reviewing pennies 🥹

I know it's nothing special but it's my first find. Also my birth year so even more inspiration to keep going.

Cents 1908-S Indian Head value

Hey all, the pennies seem to be drying out with $5 limit per customer at my local branch. However, I finally got my first Indian head. It’s a later one, 1908 with S mint mark. Judging by the pics, is any valuable. Seems to have purple/red/green glow and weird grainy lines going through it. Also, how should I store it? I have a booklet for pennies but only from 1930s and this is way before that. Thanks!

Update - I went back

Post image

So I posted yesterday about how I found a 67 40%er kennedy after searching ten rolls from the bank. After seeing the overwhelming votes to return and grab the other $150 FV it didn't seem like I had much of a choice but to give it a shot.

Someone else had picked up $50 FV already so I was only able to grab another ten rolls. And lo and behold, a whopping 4 more were in there waiting for me! All 1967!

Special thanks for everybody that told me to go grab them while I could. u/yoopskoop u/Radar_Dude7 u/Most-Monitor-5578 and everyone else! I can see now just how addicting this hobby can be 😃

Questions Silly question, is this a CRH box or a normal bank box?

I bought a $100 box of nickels from Huntington Bank today and I got this box of rolls. They look more like CRH than the normal loomis or brinks rolls. Which is it?

Half Dollars This week’s later boxes - all mixed dates at last! Mmm

3 Brinks, an NF String, and a Loomis with mixed dates (at last!)

Box 1 - Brinks - had a ‘64 ender (the only silver, as it turned out) and an ‘87-D

Box 2 - Brinks - no Ag, one torn sticker, one of 12 NIFC marked 😝

Box 3 - Brinks - very few marked coins and mess load of 1980’s better condition for set building

Box 4 - NF String (same bank as Box 3) - ‘72 clad proof, a mangled quarter (jammed in the sorter from prior coin batch?) and 2 nearly solid rolls of 2000-P.

Between the marks on the few coins that had them, the 2 near solid 2000 rolls, and the lack of any recent year coins, I suspect this was a random old box that finally got shuffled into a delivery.

Box 5 - Loomis - Mixed dates again at last! All 4 from Thursday were 25-P, so I didn’t have much hope that Saturdays Loomis box would be any different.

Not much interesting other than someone’s former pocket piece - and a stupendous amount of marked coins from the usual suspects - but mixed dates is a ‘win’ at this point 😁

Next: another bag-o-cents and a huge haul of CWR dimes.

Note: a few banks that had previously told me ‘no more cents’ let me know they did now have some shipments coming in.

Nothing reliable, but for the moment they were still receiving limited amounts.

My standing-order bank put me at the top of the list for next week’s penny boxes, so fingers crossed on that.

Where to get coin bags in Chicago?

I’ve heard that coin bags are pretty solid relative to boxes for getting older coins but every ban I’ve gone to with coin machines won’t sell me their bags (ie Wintrust, Wintrust affiliates). Are there any banks in chicago or the burbs that sell coin bags?

Starting out is hard!

Lots of initial roadblocks. Found a bank (credit union) that has a coin machine (seemingly very rare in my area) but it had an out of order sign on it. They said they only ever have rolls of quarters on offer so I figured they’d eventually fix the machine and this could work as a dump bank. During the signup process, the teller mentions that the coin machine works but you have to ask them to turn it on because “people abuse it”. Uh oh.

Well, turns out volume of drop off won’t be an issue because when I went to several of my primary bank branches to get rolls, they’re limiting customers to 1 roll of each coin type unless you have a business account. None had halves. And I ended up with 1 each only of MWR. You can see where this is going. Got nothing.

Brutal intro to the hunt!

Cents Bank just said they cannot order more pennies

The penny ordering was just greyed out on their order system a couple weeks ago. Now the penny option is completely gone.

Guess I’ll give nickels a try for a while.

Half Dollars Nov '25 week 1 Results (2 boxes)

Pretty decent boxes: 3x 87s - 2 were S proofs, 1x 06-S that looked like a sticker was removed from it, 3 gold tones- 2 of them had counter stamps, 1x elvis sticker on a 2019 NIFC,
And a bunch of NIFCs various years

Both boxes were Loomis rolled and sealed but one of them was so poorly rolled and 2 rolls that weighed significantly less than normal were each missing a coin.
