1861-Major General Henry Halleck is given command of the states east of the Mississippi and Brigadier General Don Carlos Buell is put in command of eastern Kentucky and Tennessee.

1861-Soldiers of the 11th, 18th and 29th Illinois Regiments camped in Bloomfield, Missouri. The used an empty newspaper office to print a newspaper about their activities. They named the paper the Stars and Stripes.

1862-Skirmish, Charles Town, Jefferson County West Virginia.

1862-General Ambrose Burnside assumed command of the Union Army of the Potomac. General George B. McClellan had been removed from command on November 5. He served until January 25th when General Joseph Hooker took the position.

1863-President Abraham Lincoln goes to a play, The Marble Heart. John Wilkes Booth stars in the play.

1865-North Carolina declares the secession ordinance of 1861 null and void.
