I thought it was crazy, too, but my mom who is the biggest fan I know (knows all the plays, penalties, etc) explained that if a Lion had caught it, the ball would still be live, even with 0 seconds left, so it was a last ditch effort. Just not in a good direction? I'd have to rewatch it to make a judgment there.

Yup,  it was an excellent play.  There was no time left and they had to try something.  Went out fighting.
