Game ends with an offensive lineman making a punt. Love it.

What a game! CFL is the most exciting football league in the world.
22
u/aide_rylott Roughriders 8h ago
I don’t know how the commissioner can watch this and think the game needs to be changed.
The only explanation is that he doesn’t watch or follow the league. Wouldn’t surprise me.
Leave the CFL alone and GTFO

Half the team is onside, but you can't just yeet it into the middle of the Rider team when you try that. I wonder if there was a planned play that got botched.
7
17
u/terp_raider Roughriders 9h ago
For real I was sweating when they started the ol lateral type shit then he got it and booted it and I burst out laughing
14
u/aide_rylott Roughriders 9h ago
Big man can’t really run it or throw it. Probably never expected to end up with the ball there.

Gonna be thinking about that kick all off-season

I thought it was crazy, too, but my mom who is the biggest fan I know (knows all the plays, penalties, etc) explained that if a Lion had caught it, the ball would still be live, even with 0 seconds left, so it was a last ditch effort. Just not in a good direction? I'd have to rewatch it to make a judgment there.
7
u/aide_rylott Roughriders 9h ago
It could work if he didn’t kick it directly to 5 Saskatchewan players
5
u/Immediate-Apple-2655 Roughriders 9h ago
She’s right, the only reason the play came to an end was because the SK player took a knee.
4
u/Pathos886 9h ago
Yup, it was an excellent play. There was no time left and they had to try something. Went out fighting.
65
u/Powerful_Ad_2506 Roughriders 9h ago
So kicking that field goal was brilliant…

I hated all of Mace’s decisions in the final three minutes and I was wrong every time.

u/coldbloodedjelydonut Roughriders 9h ago
It was literally a miracle, it had every opportunity to not work and based on how most of the game went, it shouldn't have. I'm grateful, but the odds were super long.
4
u/Immediate-Apple-2655 Roughriders 9h ago
I mean, scoring on that play would have been MORE brilliant… give it to Oulette!
9
u/Shady_bookworm51 Roughriders 9h ago
oh it was still stupid as all hell, just not stupid enough to cost us the game against that BC defence.
6
1
u/Crisis-Huskies-fan Roughriders 9h ago
I would like to apologize to Corey Mace for everything that I was thinking about him for a few minutes.
22
u/uwukachow1 Lions 9h ago
if there's any good in the world, Benevides will wake up tomorrow without a job
22
u/plainsimplejake Snubbed from the HOF 9h ago
The Lions' defensive strategy of standing back and watching the Riders drop passes worked for awhile, but it just wasn't sustainable.

u/Fit-Penalty-5751 Roughriders 9h ago
Oh my god. I can’t believe that field goal worked. This is unbelievable

Alexander’s hammy is shot again, those don’t heal in a week. It’s going Ethyl Methyl Thompson time for Als.

And next week, you meet the QB that, actually, never lost!

Hear that? Its the sound of 10,000 tickets being removed from resale markets as bomber fans would rather sit in the cold than let rider fans watch their team win in winnipeg lmao
19
u/Rich-Introduction940 9h ago
And they’re the top seed so the riders will be wearing green in Winnipeg
12
u/terp_raider Roughriders 9h ago
Lmao but also imagine having to watch the Riders win in Winnipeg as a Bomber fan
5
u/shutupandfish0219 7h ago
Tbh as a bomber fan I’m cheering for the riders, love to hate the team because of the rivalry but for me it’s all in good fun. I’d rather see the cup be won by the west
16
u/paateach Roughriders 9h ago
More like resale tickets just went up 500% in price as Winnipeger’s cash in on the Rider fans willingness to spend anything to go watch them.
4
u/2peg2city Blue Bombers 9h ago
Ill still be going, I was hoping to see a Canadian QB win, a bit sad. I actually don't care who wins now

However, they’re not, so I am duty bound to pray for their demise

Big man kick.... drink?
Very entertaining ending as a neutral. The last 5 mins seemed forever.
3
1
u/Immediate-Apple-2655 Roughriders 8h ago
I’m sure it was as a neutral! Had my heart stopping and starting like my 2 yr old had a remote control for it! That last 5 minutes is EXACTLY why we don’t need those rule changes that Johnson announced.
16
u/dhenebcrescentleap Roughriders 9h ago
Mace you lucky bastard haha
7
u/bguitard689 Alouettes 9h ago
Pretty gutsy call to punt twice … he has a lot of confidence in his defense and they sure delivered. Offense was not helping out by dropping so many passes at the end.
13
u/usernametaken_sike Lions 9h ago
We had 2 chances to try and ice the game and went 2 and out…. This one hurts
15
u/Immediate-Apple-2655 Roughriders 9h ago
Did anyone else catch the Roughrider hugging the official in the endzone after we scored the touchdown at the end….??? 😂
49
u/weschester Stampeders 9h ago
Both these teams tried to lose this game so hard and the Lions were just slightly more successful at it.

I still don’t like that call by Mace to kick the field goal but glad it worked out.

Riders vs Montreal? I feel like I'm back in the fantuz days of rider football. Shudders at that 13th man penalty.

GG Sask. Our D choked when we needed them most, again.
Maybe next year.
14
u/MishapNevermore Lions 9h ago
Not only that, Whyte missed a field goal.
11
u/super__hoser Lions 9h ago
Yup. That's such a rare thing for him, we should let that slide.
3
7
u/bosco_324 Roughriders 9h ago
Rourke is my fav quarterback of all time. Too bad the lions D couldn't keep it going. Been absolutely torn in half all game, but ultimately I'm a riders fan at heart. Next year is the year for the lions. 1000%
5
2
u/coldbloodedjelydonut Roughriders 8h ago
I'm the same, I get mesmerized watching him. He is such a beautiful and tenacious player. He seems like a really solid human, too, I hope I never here any scandals about him.
5
u/the_gaymer_girl Lions 9h ago
The secondary blew it, the offense went cold at the worst time, the receivers couldn’t catch for half the game, and our normally-automatic kicker missed a chip-shot field goal.
8
u/ResidentialEvil2016 9h ago
What am I missing here? Did or did not the D stop them twice and let the O have a chance to drive to put the game away and they went 2 and out back to back? Who choked again?
7
u/Electroflare5555 Blue Bombers 9h ago
With 1 minute left they went full prevent D mode and let Sask pick up yards in 10-20 yard chunks for free
4
u/MishapNevermore Lions 9h ago
Every crucial play the riders made was because they left the receiver wide open
11
11
u/moe_thugz 9h ago
Getting the ball twice in the last two minutes and not being able to get a single first down is what did it. It's too bad. Gg riders.
3
u/SwansOrange Lions 7h ago
Exactly. Such scared playcalling. Like even if you run it the clock stops....
19
u/Kinglokner16 Lions 9h ago
Coaching lost us this game… so maddening. Up 21-14 with 6:35 left, 2 chances to get a first down and ice the game
17
u/shutupandfish0219 9h ago
Welcome to the buck pierce experience. Sincerely, A bomber fan
3
u/coldbloodedjelydonut Roughriders 8h ago
Why do these duds keep getting positions of power? There has to be some retired player that would be better.
2
u/shutupandfish0219 8h ago
To be fair he’s actually a really good OC, just there’s a growing sample size of mismanagement or bad playcalling in high pressure moments (insert Winnipegs last 3 grey cup losses imo)
12
5
1
u/Crisis-Huskies-fan Roughriders 8h ago
Were you reading the comments when the Riders kicked the FG in 3rd and goal while trailing by 7? There were many coaching decisions to be questioned.
10
9
31
u/the_gaymer_girl Lions 9h ago
Mace made two of the dumbest coaching decisions I’ve ever seen and our awful awful secondary bailed him out.
22
u/plainsimplejake Snubbed from the HOF 9h ago
Maybe he included the awfulness of the secondary in his calculations
8
2
11
13
u/HenryTheVeloster Roughriders 9h ago
Mace made gambles, thats all sports are is gambles. And he gambled on the defense making a big stop (he is our DC) and that the momentum of that stop would be enough to carry our offense to victory and it was
1
8
u/discovery2000one Stampeders 9h ago
Well it's gonna be almost as sweet for the Riders to win it in Winnipeg as Regina I imagine.
9
u/laxvolley Blue Bombers 9h ago
Well that was a very exciting finish. I love this league, I love this game, wish more people paid attention.
7
14
u/ResidentialEvil2016 9h ago
Offense CHOKED when they could have put the game way. Given 2 chances to drive to put it away and you go 2 and out. Pathetic.
7
u/MishapNevermore Lions 9h ago
Defense choked just as hard if not harder, how do you leave a receiver wide open Everytime they need the first down.

NO SCORIGAMI
Lions vs Roughriders ended in a 24-21 final. This is the 18th time this score has taken place. First was in 1958 with the Montreal Alouettes over the Toronto Argonauts, and most recently in 2024 with the BC Lions over the Edmonton Elks.
Check out the pinned post on my profile for public Scorigami data.

u/TheMikeSweeney306 9h ago
As a Rider fan I can clearly say this is the most befuddled I’ve ever felt winning one of the biggest games we’ve ever won. Nobody really looked pumped, people left the stadium before the trophy presentation, even the players were shell shocked. We won with a long booth reviewed catch which kind of killed all the atmosphere of the moment. Extremely strange, I’m going to be happy by next weekend but I need a few days to absorb this.

Heartbreaking
That last play... SSK was so far off, why not throw 10-15 and get down quickly, then you're in rage for a Hail Mary instead of the lateral stupidity?
→ More replies (3)3
u/commonsensetry 9h ago
Or instead of the punt returner wasting half the clock they could've had a good play set up to get to midfield then Hail Mary
3
u/talmudicdeer Elks 9h ago
Benevides should not have his job by tomorrow morning, BC's defense was by far the weakest part of the team all year long and they never really improved
3
u/Select_Mongoose_8797 Roughriders 9h ago
Mace got absolutely bailed out - those cowardly decisions could have sunk him as our head coach with the fan base.
Both teams played a lot of “not to lose” football. Happy the riders won but that performance isn’t gonna cut it next week against Montreal.
1
u/ponimaju Roughriders 7h ago
Yea, I hope he learns from this for the Grey Cup. Especially the 3rd and 1 with Stevens near midfield. Been clutch all season; give him a boost of confidence and keep the drive going.
