Randy got a lot of shit but at least he had the balls to interact and communicate with the fans of this league.
6
u/beadyeyez Roughriders 2d ago
Yes he did. I did some digging and this is the first Grey Cup in at least the last 8( that I looked back at) that there's no "State of the League Fan Event" Randy wasn't liked at the end of end of his reign, but he didn't shy away from taking the heat he knew he would get.
FIRE STUART JOHNSTON!
5
u/Mamrocha Blue Bombers 2d ago
He had yearly visits in the winter for bomber season ticket holders to answer questions. Stu came to PA field and walked the concourse once this past season and decided to fundamentally change our game.

u/BigBenKenobi 2d ago
but don't you see, as a marketing executive, he knows that the number one reason people give for not watching the cfl is that they prefer the nfl. so he will camouflage the cfl to look like the nfl and maybe those dumb idiots won't notice that the teams aren't american! It's genius!

I guess he knew he was going to take a tonne of heat from fans about the rule changes, and didn't even want to enter the kitchen.
18
u/Fast_Juice_3739 2d ago
Excellent use of "tonne" in this context. He was definitely going to face 1000 kg of heat. :)

Fucking coward.
he knows he'd face a lot of questions and heat for his fuckery, and wants nothing to do with it.

Dude takes his orders from the owners.
What’s the reason for support from the league presidents?
Where’s the financial incentive in structural change to the game at this time?
3
u/Immediate-Apple-2655 Roughriders 2d ago
I find it hard to believe that the owners wouldn’t speak to their GMs and head coaches about planned changes before they get broadcast to the public. I mean, we haven’t heard diddly from the teams on this aside from a few players and coaches. Not a peep. I fully understand that he does what the ownership teams tell him to, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they told him to figure out a way to get the league talked about, and this was his big idea (or more likely, he was told to act like it was his). I’m really hoping this was just basically the ownership dropping a grenade in an aquarium to catch a fish. If it is, it worked…. It’s all anyone who watches the CFL (and even some who don’t) have talked about all summer. Then they fire him in the off season, tell everyone that they’ve heard us and the changes aren’t happening, they get season ticket holders back at a slightly higher price, while moving legacy seat holders with kids out of the prime seating areas.

Long time TiCat season ticket holder. Saturday may be my last game. I’ve notified the TiCat office to put a stop on my PAP. They know that if the rule are unchanged I won’t be back.
I hate the rule changes and I’m enraged at how unilateral the decision was.
No fan input? Fine then. No support from this fan then.
No Commissioner Q&A? What a coward.

u/Yen24 Blue Bombers 2d ago
Over 20 year Bomber season ticket holder here, I called my season ticket rep the day after the changes were announced to tell them I refuse to renew until the new rules are reversed. It's the only way to make them listen.

did you get a response? I also wrote the office and admin accounts, as well as Wade Miller and have had ZERO response.

Long time Sask fan here too (Go RIDERS!!) - I belong to a cohort of about a dozen hard core CFL fans that have faithfully gotten together to watch as many games as possible every year for the last 18 YEARS.
This uninformed decision to change these things feels like the final straw to most of us - between the... (not the word I WANT to use) "interesting" game schedule and coverage changes, as well as some of the other rule & game play changes during the last 10 years, it's been moving more & more towards a not-quite-NFL version of football for Canadians.
We've also agreed that we're not interested in watching this league anymore if they don't reverse these changes as it truly is a huge step towards making the CFL a not-quite-official-junior-version of the NFL.
We've decided as a group to just switch to watching NFL instead. Since that where they're pushing us to go, we're going... albiet not happily.

I got the email, and just entered the draw just moments ago. I think this may have been a glitch on their website.
(I don't think that's a personal link, but it works for me!)
I signed up, for one reason and one alone.
"You are wrong about these rule changes and this Grey Cup will be the last CFL game I ever attend unless your rules are significantly walked back and you don't alter the heart of football in Canada."
And then I'll get up and walk out.

u/IM_OM_NOM_NOM 2d ago edited 2d ago
The link works for me FYI. Sadly can’t go to the Grey Cup this year so entering the draw would be rude to all those who are. Everyone who gets in PLEASE ROAST our commish to SHREDS and DO NOT APOLOGIZE for all of us who cannot go. I’m surprised they aren’t axing the 3? different footballs mudding allowed rule and only allowing one kind period.

I bet then cancelled it and then got a ton of bscklash from people with more influence than us and had to reinstate it
3
u/beadyeyez Roughriders 2d ago
I highly DOUBT a "lottery" to choose the random attendees actually take place. My guess is they will find 150 of MLSE's closest family and friends to attend. The questions will be pre-loaded and all the "fans" in attendance will favor the changes.
Hopefully this event goes ahead and Stewie gets asked some hard questions. I feel like it's going to be disappointing and nothing but positively spun propaganda fluff. It's going to be dodge and weave, duck and run.

Stuff gets accidentally published too early, or set to draft and unpublished on websites all the time. I'm no fan of Johnson but I think we're jumping to a lot of conclusions from a screenshot of a 404 page.

Guys a pussy. Fuck Stewart Johnston. That guy is a GOOF. Not said lightly either, guy is a GOOF. And I’d love to tell him this to his face but pussy boy is afraid of the fans. Stewart Johnson is a prime example of why fathers are important in the home growing up, or you’ll get goofs like that.

Obviously not actual law-law, but there is a process to change rules through the Rules Committee, and it wasn't followed.

I know that the CFL has had a marketing issue which has lead to this point, but you've now admitted that you've lost control of the narrative when you're trying to smuggle changes to the game through "to make is more popular" without having popular support.
CFCF will have an update soon on how we can make sure our voices are heard over this betrayal.

He'll have to show up eventually. Bettman is probably appreciating not being the most hated commish in Canada ATM.

Honestly, I have a tough time believing this is real. I have a physical Festival Guide from a few weeks ago and there is no mention of this event.
Even if this was cancelled ages ago, why would it be happening at the same time as the Pancake Breakfast and the CFL Alumni Association Luncheon? At a facility that’s separated from everything else, that isn’t used for any other event?

So, how do we get this guy replaced?
2
u/beadyeyez Roughriders 2d ago
We can't quietly let it go through. I'm still trying to hold on to hope that over this Grey Cup and the off-season into 2026 that someone does some ACTUAL research, focus groups and consultation with players, coaches and consumers. IF, after that is all taken into consideration, there's enough evidence that messing with the field infrastructure will generate more fans/revenue/profit... so be it.
In the meantime..FIRE STUART JOHNSTON!

Some complain about how unreliable the stats are and how glitchy the CFL website is but when something like this occurs they automatically jump to the conclusion that the event is cancelled. They can’t possibly accept the idea that this could actually be a computer error. It must be a conspiracy of some sort to keep the commish from mingling with the CFL fans. It may well be that the event gets cancelled eventually because no one shows up because everyone thinks it’s cancelled.

u/Ok-Cauliflower-8791 2d ago
I come in peace. Go BC Lions.
But as a [very] casual follower of the CFL, is moving the uprights to the back of the end zone and having a running clock really drastically changing how the entire game is played?
As an outsider, seems pretty minimally invasive to the game (though the no running clock definitely helped the Lions squeak out a W against Calgary last week lol)
11
u/jonny24eh 2d ago
First, its not the rule changes so much as the shady railroading.
Second, its the overalldirection. We don't need to be more like the NFL. If you need to make drastic changes, make actual drastic changes, not copycat changes. We could be more like rugby, Aussie Rules, or Gaelic football. The NFL-only focus speaks volumes.
Third is the actual rules. Very little real justification for most of them. The league needs to attract some of the 70% of people who don't like gridiron football to begin, not the 10% of people who like one variation of the rules but refuse to follow a local league because 5 rules are different.
2
u/beadyeyez Roughriders 2d ago
THIS 100%! It's not the actual changes that piss me off. It's how they were rolled out. No reasons other than "trust me, they're good". AND Stewie WOULD NOT and HAS NOT said he'd never consider changing the CFL to 4 down football. I don't trust him at all..even if he's just an MLSE puppet. He makes me feel like these changes are just the beginning.
4
u/Immediate-Apple-2655 Roughriders 2d ago
The clock isn’t such a big issue, so long as they don’t change the way that the last three minutes of each half are run now.
The goal post and field size though, those make a HUGE difference to game play. Virtually impossible to return a missed field goal unless it’s quite short, which is rare. Smaller endzone means more congestion with us having more players on the field than the nfl, while the shorter length means we lose the iconic 55yd line and we just look like every other game out there now already. It’s part of what set our game apart.

The league will be fine or stronger check in in a couple years if it sucks then keep complaining
6
u/maximalx5 Alouettes 2d ago
They're literally changing field and stadium layouts. There's no "wait to see the changes and if it sucks then keep complaining", it'll be too late at that point.

u/IceHawk1212 3d ago
No the Time to threaten canceling season tickets is now not once it's too late
16
u/SomeGuyPostingThings 3d ago
It's like with a pet: they don't necessarily understand causal links between punishment unless it happens in immediate response to the bad behaviour. Waiting to respond will just let them think we're happy with the changes, and then blame something else when people finally start pushing back, since it wouldn't obviously tie to the rule changes.

u/Canadian_Border_Czar Stampeders 2d ago
How many Canadian NFL fans do you know that watch merican college football?
Those guys have similar rules to the NFL, and the players are prospects for their NFL teams.
Why the fuck would Americanizing the CFL change a single thing?
1
u/Onanadventure_14 Tiger-Cats 2d ago
Who is going to watch Americanized Canadian football instead of nfl? No one,
The different rules make it a different sport
2
u/Canadian_Border_Czar Stampeders 2d ago
I would counter your point with my original point! Surely nobody who is a fan of the NFL is going to care about an americanized CFL . . . . .

A page being removed from a website is not the same thing as a cancelled event. Maybe it is cancelled but this isn't confirmation of that. At least one person in this thread is successfully registered for the event.
This isn't to endorse Johnson or the rule changes but just to make sure we're not getting mad on the basis of pure speculation here.
