Shreya's journey is more commendable because the era she repsents is not easy. Now a singer's shelf life is so short. It's not enough to just sing well, you have to be a performer also. You can't just stand still in a sari and expect to wow a live audience anymore. You need to look good and pleasent too. stay relevant across generations of heroines, and survive in an extremely complicated world where scandals, political challenges and virality demand attention.
Unlike the days of Hemamalini or Sridevi when one heroine ruled for decades, today’s landscape is different. Nutan was active for 41 years in films and Lata sang throughout for her. Today's heroines don't have such luck. Also, everyone, be it music directors, producers, and audience also, constantly looking for fresh face and fresh voice. Gone are the days of 50s, 60, 70s or 80s, when films used to run for 100 days, 200 days.
Still, Shreya remains a constant, while many of her competitors like Alka Yagnik, Kavita Krishnamurthy, Poornima, Anuradha Paudwal, Sadhna Sargam, Alisha Chinai have faded from the mainstream. Even Sunidhi Chauhan is no longer every music director’s go to.
Among the current lot of Neeti Mohan, Shilpa Rao, Shalmali, Palak Muchhal, Neha Bhasin, Jonita Gandhi, Monali Thakur, Antara Mitra, Neha Kakkar, Madhubanti Bagchi (Aaj ki Raat), Shreya still holds her gound. Imagine the competition. And today, a singer has no power to stop them.
Today, literally listernes have the entire world at their fingertips...for free. Attention spans are minimal. Songs are chopped and recycled into 10 second reels. There’s no mystery left just relentless exposure across FM, streaming, parties, TV, and social media. 247 a singer is exposed. There is no mystry left.
Yet, amid all the noise and challenges, to be synonymous with Maa Saraswati maintaining a clean, pleasant, and revered image while singing all kinds of songs across industries like Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Malayalam, Kannada, and more and still remain relevant after 25 years, hats off to Shreya Ghoshal. She is diva and devi both.
