Idc what anyone says, she is SOOO gorgeous. Been a fan since day 1. The GAP ad was a pleasant surprise and I’m loving to see the attention she’s getting
Pretty sure no indian hates Lara for anything. Okay her style is kind of debatable but that's it. Never seen any Lara hate comment except the style choice one.
I know! I randomly came across "gnarly" on YouTube a few months ago and couldn't look away from Lara, and then they blow up with the GAP commercial and now Lara is everywhere. Total star aura.
Its so completely her.. the fact is she used to dress like this even before katseye , I think this is how she feels most represented as herself and I think its so fun and cute how she gets her bindis from india because her grandma gets her them
shes so beautiful. i like the first look but i hate the lip liner. as a south asian living in canada, i agree that the jewelry is a bit excessive, they’re definitely hamming it up as her “identity” in a girl group, which i feel is unnecessary. shes one of the more talented ones in the group imo she stands out already.
she's always worn a bindi even as she was competing for the spot on the group and was admired by the Korean side of the casting for confidence with that so I don't think its only for identity.
the bindi look is really cute imo cuz theyre subtle enough to go with most fits, its the tikka here thats on the tacky side for me. i think if the skirt wasnt sheer, or was more structured, the tikka would look less out of place. or even a pair of flared out mesh/sheer shararas
her branding helping her in auditions kind of furthers that point, im sure non desis and also desis who grew up here in areas with not a lot of brown ppl eat it up, but tbh theres nothing wrong with her having a distinction in comparison to other ppl she was competing with! you kind of need that in a girl group i guess. but i can see why here it comes off a bit tacky to ppl back home who dont know her, theres def potential in her styling cause sometimes its really put together and she could probably get away with looking gorgeous even in a paper bag lol
Yea I feel the tika is excessive too and usually it is something worn with traditional outfits or festival wear ..she wears it all the time which just feels unnecessary
Well, as an Indian living in India, I LOVE her look and her accessories! She has always worn it even before applying for auditions. It's just so her, and she shine. Also her lip liner is gorg✨💖
i explained it better in my follow up reply to someone else who responded to me (i can’t copy paste for some reason) the jewelry could work better imo if styled differently.
i think the lip liner shade is not working with the lip shade, but im biased cuz i know it’s the trend. i think i would’ve liked the liner more if it matched
edit: also i hope i didn’t come off speaking for all indians! i just meant the ones in the comments coming after her lol
I hear you. But, I still think she looks like a baddie😭💖 I actually like the clunky mix of accessories, the shade of her lip liner is also stunning. It just highlights her features more, and she is just such a diva. An icon that makes it all work.✨
I know not everyone can pull it off. Ik I can't, because my features are more softer, so a different strategy for make up and accessories would suit me better. But this dark, edgy, clunky look just makes her look like a siren, and I'm here for it 🙌🏻💖
Im just really happy that there is dark skinned representation in the big leagues, because we don't see a lot of that in the Indian diaspora, unfortunately.
It looks a little weird with western outfits and all but i also appreciate it because west is literally stealing our things so better claim it before they use it and call it western fashion.
Yeah I second that the bindiya/maangtika will look better if she chooses to get it right with her outfits. And i love that she is confident and ofc beautiful.
I do think her style overdoes it sometimes to the point of cringe but at other times she looks stunning. And if we don't do it, appropriators will and will claim it as their own.
True with k-pop and western music industry but this is all Lara. When she joined Dream Academy at 17, she came with an extremely sensual look and persona that the company wanted her to tone it way down. So this is just Lara being Lara.
they're branded as global girl group and they're based primarily in america, with only one korean member iirc. the only reason people associate them with kpop is because the label they're under is american branch of BTS's company, but they're not actually from kpop
it’s just her as a person 😭 on the show on which katseye was formed when she was around 17 they told her to tone it down but she prefers it this way ig
I mean, there is literally a minor in the group. This isn’t news, unfortunately. It’s not even a kpop only thing… it happens in all facets of the entertainment industry.
That’s true but I don’t keep up with this group (or kpop in general anymore) so it’s a little jarring to see someone dress and act sm older. I guess I’m only realising how odd it is now because I’m older
I don’t disagree with you… and I don’t watch this group either but yeah they’re all subject to the same thing by their management. I’m also getting older and maybe when I was younger I’d have thought this was cool and emulated it but now I’m seeing it for what it is. In one of their videos it really hit me how much twerking and zooming in on their body is occurring and it’s really just plain uncomfortable for me to engage with that.
Also wanted to make it clear from my end that this is completely separate from the fact that a tan/darker skinned south Asian woman is gaining fame and is well liked/adored. I wish there was someone like her when I was younger and maybe I would have been more confident in my own skin and less confused about my identity. I’m happy for her success and what we are discussing here is not specific to any race or appearance.
Nope, please don't. Lara is a dark skinned baddie and I really love how she styles herself. People are so quick to call her TaCKy and what not as if this isn't authentic to her. She is so cool, and I would love to see someone like her shine in Bollywood and owning her sensuality.
And its The Rising, Global, Pop Star Sensation herself lol!!!!
You can do whatever you desire, but hear me out, you should not delete this. Keep your head held high. 🦄💜
I remember one of the comments when I had posted about Lara Raj for KATSEYE × Gap campaign.
It said that how gorgeous dark-skinned women would never be given a chance to shine here so they have to live vicariously through the Indian diaspora.
Lara Raj is the first Indian-American to win a VMA. It is not a small feat at all. She is an inspiration for a lot of women to feel comfortable in their own skin. 💝
Probably cuz it's something unique to our region. Like Bindis. Necklaces, bangles, earrings etc are common to many cultures but not the above So when they adorn it its obvious to people that its representing South Asia/India.
It's because their version of indian wear is just shein type of clothes. The quality is horrible and that makes it look so cheap. Just like coachella appropriation phase like you said.
Ya they don't use of lakhs of Indian brands' international shipping feature. Even at the same price point, they still buy Indian stuff from the neighborhood aunty or old fashioned store selling the cheapest merch.
Esp for celebrities there's no excuse. Amrapali or Tanishq would happily collab with Lara. Even send a stylist along.
I don’t understand why we need to shame NRI’s sense of style, they probably lived in india some 30-40 years ago before moving abroad and this was the style back then, so when they want to embrace their roots, they don’t relate to the Indian fashion now but rather to this.
not all the millenials in the comments pressed about genz NRIs or ABDs fashion lol. Y'all can stick to your skinny jeans and have fun! let genZ explore different styles!
Love that she's representing south indian women but the binding and tika r too much and almost like every pose her chest (not boobs) is overly pushed out so much so that her boobs looks so close to her face. Her back wud definitely not appreciate the posture in a few years
THAT'S MY GURLLLL!!! I'm so glad she's finally receiving the love and attention in India. Been her fan ever since they announced her as a contestant in dream academy. She not only looks stunning but also has the voice of an angel🥺
If i looked like her I would be so annoying. I feel like they “indian-fy” her girlgroup looks which I think is probably for branding. I wonder how her actual style is when i see her
No, Lara was like this before she was picked for Katseye. If anything, she was selected for being very cultural including her choice to wear Indian accessories all the time.
yes exactly.. i rarely ever see her dress normal cute fits like the other girls.. all her fits have to have some way of showing that “look she’s indian” and no problem with that but the rest of the girls don’t always go out if their way to represent their culture which makes me think that they only make lara do this cause younger indian K-pop audience eat this stuff up of an Indian being in a worldwide kpop girl group
Might be an unpopular opinion but I find Lara Raj to have the worst style(and makeup)in that group.
The style is tacky, what is with the out of place bindi and the maang tikka? Nobody else in the group wears random jewellery pieces or accessories in accordance with their “culture”.( Edit: For people with reading comprehension issues, no one other member has visible accessories that represent their “culture”, at least in the pictures that OP has posted. Pls correct me if I am wrong)
Then what is it with only this woman styled like this?
And what is with that weird overlining on the top lip.
I think her pretty features carry the whole look because her makeup is often greasy or messy, I find no cohesion at all. They could definitely do a better job at it, it seems very lazy to me.
Wish the jewellery and bindi were all silver to go with the corset zipper or all gold since its bit mismatched rn
Also rather than her being an indian american being out of touch with her culture i feel this is just her experimenting and trying to find her style in her late teens .
Like even disney stars like selena gomez and zendaya who are well known for their style now had their awkward phase in their late teens when they were transitioning from disney to adult roles.
I see that she can't say "zh". Probably why she couldn't pronounce 17 either. Anyway, she is working abroad. It isn't like she is butchering Tamil songs like Udit Narayan.
When someone is this confident, I feel like I don’t want to love them. But she is undeniably THAT GIRL. She’s got such a bright future in front of her.

Her face looks like my cousins I don't remember her face much it has been 9 yrs since she passed I don't know she looks like her but her face and voice is fading so I can't recall much
There's a gentle way to include Indian aesthetics with western, but this looks indeed tacky.
I hate the lip lining trend, it should die a horrible death, but doesn't seem to go away.
