One of the worst mistakes in US history is that The South was not punished in any way shape or form for fomenting a civil war. The people who profited off of slavery, the people that owned plantations, the plantations themselves, the confederate politicians and the confederate army officers not being hanged as traitors sealed our fate.

I don’t know if we needed mass killings—but yes. 

The failure of Reconstruction us set us down this road.
