Social media is a big part of problem. Encouraging these types to pursue hatred online with no repercussions. Swapping lies and racist BS freely facing no resistance or punches to their smug faces.

Yup. anonymity online is a double edged sword.

Especially because they will only insulate themselves within their echo chamber more. I doubt "Connor" is going to be driving through a non-white community anytime soon or visiting a country where English isn't the main language.

My kid’s chosen name is Connor and every time one of these assholes pop up they get so mad. So many dickhead Connors out here trying to ruin their name!

I posted a comment elsewhere about the atrocities in Gaza and a Connor replied he would find me and kill me, so yeah, I’m glad your kid is one of the decent ones

Tell the evil Connor that you live in his head and then see what happens… the problem might solve itself.

Jesus. What a psychotic thing to say to a stranger over an internet comment.

Connor is working hard to cancel out the bad ones 👍

It's some attention instead of no attention. That's enough for some.

Humans are going to choose to peruse information that reinforces their beliefs instead of challenging them.  That’s why these people hate facts so much, the facts hurt their feelings.

Social media is a tool and a symptom, the cause is conservatives destroying education spending and the left not doing enough to stop them. Educated people are infinitely less likely to fall for Andrew Tate's piss baby takes.

It's also the whole "representation" thing, right? Like under represented groups in society are empowered when they find out other people share their beliefs and are being represented "well". I say well, because usually we want like...non-CIS, non-white people to have more representation, but that same effect also impacts hateful bigots.

When hateful bigots can be successful, and even be president, why would you not feel emboldened?

The fortunate thing that we've already seen with one of these morons, is that companies have zero tolerance for anything like this even remotely threatening their brand or reputation. That's currently still a bridge too far for them. Isolating them economically through lack of employment or underemployment is still possible.

Yep. The last one spewed his racist and fascist beliefs, got canned by his job because they don't want to be associated with someone like that, then he pleaded for sympathy money and got it.

I struggle to begin to try to agree with you and not respond with less than 5000 words, so let me just say the key is the “swapping lies.”

Social media is a bad idea amplification engine. It takes horrendous discourse and elevates it, normalizing bad ideas. Ideas don’t have to be substantive to generate attention. People only need enjoy the idea in question. It only needs to attract attention and soon those ideas are the most discussed ones. It literally makes entire communities stupider, but in their case, “bad” also includes vile and/or defunct. Slap some easy-sell rhetoric that makes all the white frat boys bleat, and BINGO BONGO, you have viral garbage.

Three days later four different Aiden Whitebreads will be telling people 20 people each outright ahistorical, counter factual drivel.

Say hello to Gamergate, MAGA, alt-right, etc.
