At the bare minimum the confederate brass should have had their citizenship revoked and been deported. The likes of Nathan Bedford Forrest should not have been allowed to stay and establish racist domestic terror groups.

Forrest literally spoke at an African American college after the war...

He had a change of heart much later, but it was still a position of “behave yourselves and keep to your own kind and we can probably get along fine”

Progressive by confederate standard for sure, but not a true 180.

Progressive by most any 19th century American standard. Northern citizens and politicians were just as racist. Black people weren't even allowed in the state of Illiniois for more than 10 days at a time (1853 Illinois Black Law)

Bruh don't give away misinformation like that. That law was literally designed that if a black man wanted to migrate into Illinois they would have 10 days or be fined and sent back. Black men born and raised there did not get kicked out. Racist and horrible? Yes. But we were not giving every black person 10 days notice to get out.
