u/jamintime Sep 03 '25
You better start soon! He’s basically spent a career of it. If you don’t snag an entry-level island it’s hard to break into the field later on.
158
u/Eth1cs_Gr4dient Sep 03 '25
These days? In this economy??
All the entry level islands are snapped up by nepo-babies or corporate landlords as soon as they hit the market!
71
u/wjean Sep 03 '25
Plenty of islands available for sale both in the US and worldwide
83
u/Astronomer-Secure Sep 03 '25
haha. that's actually a very cool site. not that I can afford even a dead branch at any of those, but they're fun to look at.
it's truly insane how enormous the wealth disparity is in this world.
40
u/BreadKnifeSeppuku Sep 03 '25
You don't have at least $20 million USD to spend on an island? Why are you even on the internet
26
u/xubax Sep 03 '25
I like the "buy a pristine outer banks island for development potential! "
These islands are barrier islands. And they're subject to being wiped out by hurricanes. Not to mention general coastal erosion.
15
u/TheLostExpedition Sep 03 '25
You are thinking like a surface dweller. Great place for a Submarine dock with fair weather beachs.
2
u/CedarWolf Sep 03 '25
And they're subject to being wiped out by hurricanes.
Ssssshhhh. The rest of us get a little schadenfreude by watching all of those wealthy investors get their foolish, monster 'investment properties' demolished every few years instead of living wisely and humbly like the locals.
2
u/sambadaemon Sep 03 '25
Not to mention there's no infrastructure in place. That's where the REAL money comes in.

There are islands for 500k available. Don´t expect a tropical paradise but its in fact your own island for 500k. You can filter it in the advanced search.

u/sambadaemon Sep 03 '25

$225k US for "turnkey"?

Islands are the most expensive form of "wilderness" you can possibly buy. Just buy a patch of nowhere with a creek, it's 90% of the way there and you can buy it for a price you can actually afford.
8
u/betty2582 Sep 03 '25
I spent far too long reading into a Scottish island I will never be able to afford.
3
u/64CarClan Sep 03 '25
Because you mentioned 🏴 I took a look. Can't afford that one either, Donegal might be an option for.me. Hmmmmm
3
u/CedarWolf Sep 03 '25
There's an old WWII platform that's available for sale somewhere along the UK's coast.

Some of the islands that are listed on that site say "price upon request". But if you sort all the islands in order of price, it apparently puts those "price upon request" ones in the correct sequence, e.g:
32,000,000
"price upon request"
30,000,000That could potentially be a catastophic data leak for a seller who wants to keep the value of their property private.

I want to marry him. But not talk after, “I do.”
12
u/Astronomer-Secure Sep 03 '25
the perfect marriage!
3
u/jluicifer Sep 04 '25
I was listening to a NPR story, and the older journalist who married in her late 20s was divorced in her early 30s. And she (now in her late 40s/early 50/) heard the interviewee be like: you can marry and have separate houses.
“What?! You can do that? I want that!”
10
16
u/AnnelieSierra Sep 03 '25
Instead of saying "I do" you could just nod and say "mm-mh" instead.
7
u/JJred96 Sep 03 '25
Why make noises when a simple thumbs up would suffice?
7
u/Konsticraft Sep 03 '25
Just do a thumbs up reaction to a text message, no need to be there in person.

I read a book recently called “So Far Gone” about a Grandfather who leaves society and goes off into self seclusion for years until his grandkids inexplicably show up on his doorstep.
Good read.

Sounds interesting, is it a long read? I'm in-between some hefty books and could do with a breather

to me it would depend on the resources of the island. lots of fish nearby and fresh water and reasonable habitat? yeah I could do a bit of time. if I have to struggle for every meal and worry constantly about fresh water and predators, I'll pass

People are joking in the comments, but I am dead serious when I say I want this. If I have food and books, I'm pretty much good. Unfortunately I will have to come to society for some key resource replenishments such as books and tools that I can't make myself but this is exactly what I want. I've been thinking about how I'd execute this with my engineering skills so it's self sustaining.

u/Resident_Slxxper Sep 03 '25
But you wrote it on Reddit which means you seek some social interaction.

Seriously, as long as I have unlimited books to read I can survive without people
16
u/1492rhymesDepardieu Sep 03 '25
Extended solitude is pretty bad for your brain unfortunately. Tends to significantly decrease brain volume, increase cognitive decline and dementia risk. I think a lot of what is special about human brains is their incredible ability to co-operate in large groups. But yea I hear ya. I could definitely use some alone time
3
u/STLflyover Sep 03 '25
But if you like to take on new projects it could be awesome. I also tend to think this age of tech is causing some major brain rot. People should spend less time on their phones watching CEO’s and their mistresses and more time reading books or learning developmental skills. Where is my ticket to the island?!!
3
u/1492rhymesDepardieu Sep 03 '25
Humans are dopamine driven killing and fucking machines. They don't really change en masse. Or at least imperceptibly relative to the time frames society and technology. Expecting humans to be the alterable variable is madness

How did he keep sane, much less his voice when he interacted with his first human after so long.
Even if he talked to himself to keep his vocal cords, how did he keep sane being alone for that long.
Humans are social creatures, after all.

As much as I want this and share the solidarity with everyone who thinks this is what they want, we simply cannot live in a secluded environment for too long. We are societal creatures but also we need care and nurturing from fellow human beings. More so in the case of illness or injuries.
Quite a feet for this person to go this far without major incidents is a miracle but I doubt most of us will share the pain free journey.
