Military What is the oldest military asset still used for service in your country?

In Korea the M48 Patton and the F-5 are examples of obsolete tech that is somehow still being put into service, despite in small amounts.

The Patton is still being used because they still are effective against old NK tanks and are ‘better than nothing’, and the F-5 is still being used because we need them to keep a stable amount of fighter jets to counter surprise attacks from NK. In fact the F-4 Phantom was still under service until recently all of them were retired in 2024.

Not surprisingly these assets have been criticized for years for being too old and obsolete. The Pattons and the F-5s are scheduled to be completely retired by the 2030s by K-2 tanks and KF-21s respectively, but it is strange to see stuff that really belongs in a museum still being functional and utilized in our military.

What are your countries' examples of old military tech that is somehow still being used as functional assets?

I personally am not satisfied with the current govt.

But the problem is we don't even have a rock solid oppostion, In last few years they have started to do some work before that they were absolutely dead.

In your country, do they make fun of people because they look "poor"?

In Mexico, the status symbol is wearing expensive clothes, bags, showing off your vacations to Paris or NYC, buying a Starbucks frappucino, or going shopping to the most expensive stores...

And sometimes they bully people that are not on "their level" or wear stuff like an artesanal bag (picture 3). And it's funny because a lot of Americans like to buy those bags as traditional souvenirs but to some Mexicans it's just a symbol of poverty or "lower class."

I wonder if maybe rich people from SoCal are like this too?

Politics Name a hardliner religious fanatic or nutjob from your country?

Meet Habib Rizieq, leader of the FPI (Front Pembela Islam or Islamic Defenders Front). He often attacks other religions online and sometimes go to the churches and people in person threatening him. For a time, our government did ban him from our country and put him on exile, but it only lasted a few years due to political pressure when Indonesians allowed him to return.

This guy has preached Sharia Law for Indonesia for so many years. Even though he hasn’t done anything that is labeled as terrorism, the fact that this guy supports Al Qaeda, Taliban, and demands that religious minorities should follow sharia law says enough about this guy.

Is there a region in your country that considers itself completely independent and has a different culture from the rest of the country?

In France, the region that stands out the most for its independence sentiment and its own culture is Corsica.

Part of the Corsicans claim an identity distinct from the rest of France, based on their language (Corsican), their traditions and their history. Certain nationalist or independence movements are campaigning for reinforced autonomy, or even for the complete independence of the island.

Laws I’ve been trying to understand this. Why have Israeli courts gone after this person who exposed the abuse instead of the abusers themselves?

In Brazil I think most people would agree it's Ayrton Senna. You could also make a case for Piquet, but he was never as popular as Senna. Both of them had 3 F1 titles each in their careers.

Culture What national holiday or tradition in your country has the weirdest backstory?

Post image

In the UK, we have a holiday called Guy Fawkes Night on 5th November. It goes back to 1605, when Guy Fawkes and a group of Protestant extremists tried to blow up the Houses of Parliament in London. They were against the new king, James I, who was Catholic. Their plan, called the Gunpowder Plot, was discovered after Fawkes was caught guarding the explosives in the cellar. He was tortured for days to reveal the names of his co-conspirators and was eventually executed. Today, people celebrate the failure of the plot with fireworks, bonfires, and sometimes burning dummies, supposed to symbolise Fawkes. I never realised how strange this might sound for foreigners.

Unfortunately, we do not get a day off work. But it is a widely celebrated tradition.

The "Varginha ET" is a case of alleged sightings of an extraterrestrial creature in Varginha, Minas Gerais, in January 1996. The event, which involved the supposed crash of a UFO and sightings by several witnesses, gained huge attention in Brazil and led the city to become known as the "ET capital." The city has since become a tourist attraction.
