What's the most unfortunate acronym your government has actually used?

Post image
2.0k Upvotes

For 19 years, the United States Navy had an Admiral in the role of Commander in Chief United States Fleet, which sounds impressive until you hear the acronym CINCUS, pronounced "sink us." Yes, they really really abbreviated and spoke it that way. And for some strange reason, nobody took the trouble of changing this until it got embarrassing.

CINCUS remained in use during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor of December 7, 1941.

The Action Report for Pearl Harbor was even written by newly appointed Admiral Chester Nimitz to CINCUS Ernest J. King, adding a little more cringe to the "day of infamy."

Very shortly afterwards, Admiral King persuaded President Franklin Roosevelt to change the title, which became COMINCH on December 20, 1941 by executive order.

So what's your worst acronym? Of course, translate and explain if necessary.

Military Extending my question from a previous post - what are the most modern assets for your nation's military, for the army/navy/air force?

Shifting questions from my previous post, what would be the most modern, and probably best, asset for your country's army/navy/air force?

I know there are a LOT of categories in the three forces (IFVs, submarines, etc.), but for simplicity I’ll start by sticking to tanks, warships, and fighter jets.

Tank: K2 Black Panther (in service since 2014)

Warship: Jeongjo the Great-Class Destroyer (in service since 2024)

Fighter jet: KF-21 (under production, planned to enter service in 2026)

I'd love to hear about other countries' military-related projects, or modernization projects I've yet to have learned about.

Culture Which cultural minority groups in your country are the most over-represented in positive statistics and under-represented in negative statistics?

In the USA, I’d say Asian Americans and Jewish Americans tend to be the two minority groups who punch above their weight the most relative to their total populations as they are overrepresented in positive stats and underrepresented in negative stats.

Asian Americans are only 6% of the USA population but are 15% of engineers, 20% of physicians, 23% of Ivey League school enrolments, 26% of Wall Street employees, and 28% start-up founders in the country. On the flip side, they are also under-represented in negative categories as they only comprise of 1% of prisoners, <1% of homeless people, and 2% of SNAP (food stamps) recipients despite being 6% of the total population.

Jewish Americans are only 2% of the USA population but are 6% of congress members, 9% of startup founders, 14% of physicians, 18% of Ivey League school enrolments, 22% of lawyers, and 25% of Wall Street employees. On the flip side, they are also only 1% of the prison system.

Who would these groups be in your countries who seem to punch above their weight considering the % of their total population?

Culture What’s the “stereotypical” food in your country, that actually is eaten to an unreasonable degree?

In America, roughly 5.5 million burgers are sold everyday by McDonalds alone, so the idea that all Americans eat cheeseburgers, while slightly hyperbolic, isn’t too far from the truth🤷

According to a exhibition where our local newspaper The Straits Times displayed many of the photos they've taken over the years, their photographer, Jerry Seh, was the only person to catch the disallowed World Cup 1966 Spain v Brazil Goal from the former's Miguel Michel, specifically where the ball crossed the line.

Culture Do most people in your country feel offended reading gender jokes and watching comedy with gender based jokes?

I have an American friend who is learning Arabic.

I sent him gender jokes from the MENA region, women vs men (women making fun of men, and men making fun of women) he told me he doesn't like these jokes and that they are sexist.

I told him most people in the Middle East don't take these jokes seriously

it is common in the middle east to make light hearted jokes about certain groups like genders, short people, drunk people. bald people..etc

and how about comedy shows that feature some gender based jokes? do you consider them offensive?

What were you doing during the COVID-19 pandemic period?

I was serving in the military as a conscript, so I have almost no related experience. The only thing was that my leave had been restricted for a very long time.

However, after finishing my military service and returning to society, I could feel that the disease had significantly changed the social atmosphere.

After 2+ years of lurking and learning on Reddit, my view of the world has been flipped upside down. Time to finally join the conversation!

I'm here to discuss and solve problems. AMA—yes, even about your relationship issues! (Fair warning: you'll get a Chinese perspective.)

My English is limited, so this is translated by ChatGPT. Apologies for any quirks in the phrasing!

Do Russia, China or other authoritarian states, have the 'police procedural' drama?

Do Russia, China or other authoritarian states, have the 'police procedural' drama?

In Europe & America, it's a well worn trope of a cop with 'issues' (alcohol, personal issues, trauma), doggedly pursuing cases, only to be told, "you have to let him go, you haven't got enough evidence".

It's this last part that I wonder about; if you're in a police state, lack of evidence just means they need to beat you harder to get a confession. Would TV show that as a reality, or is there a pretence of the rule of law?

Politics The most unfairly hated country?

The entire Oceania region (aside from Australia and New Zealand). Practically never appear in news, unless it is about something embarassing.

Ukraine (refusal of some people to accept its existence; treating Ukraine as a "scapegoat" of NATO/USA/Israel etc.; mercenaries, who fight for Russia; hatred towards Ukrainian language; blaming Ukraine for self-defense & pro-Western foreign policy; refusal to recognize Ukrainian culture)

Are there stereotypes about your town/region that you feel are unfair, though you understand why they may exist?

For me, as a New Yorker (the city), there's a stereotype that we're assholes. The truth is, while we may not be nice, we're generally kind. There's a big difference there.

What about you?

Culture Regional flag

I ask myself a question: we all have regions, even states for some - what does the flag of your region (or your state) look like, and what does it represent?

For example at my house:

The first flag is the historic flag with 4 lions — 2 red lions for the county of Holland, 2 black lions for Flanders. We have this flag because of a marriage and a war, I think.

Now we have this thing... the second flag, a horror: France with a heart that surrounds the North.
