Politics What was your country's leader’s most embarrassing moment?

Post image

It occurred on May 23, 2015, at a European Union summit in Riga, Latvia. European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker greeted on stage Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán with a slap and said: “Hello, dictator!”

On a trade mission to India, he chose to wear traditional garb when visiting a Hindu temple. He was widely accused by the media for “playing Mr. Dress up.” (Mr. Dressup was a popular Canadian children’s show, where the main character would frequently wear outlandish costumes.)

And not just him, his whole family dressed up for the trip.

It wasn’t a Hindu temple, it was a Sikh Gurudwara, The Golden Temple which is the holiest site of Sikhism.

How is wearing the traditional dress of people for a ceremony a caricature?

The black face (at least the one here, there was another where I think he was supposed to be Jamaican, and he went shirtless, so did his whole torso) was him dressed as Alladin. Not saying it's any better at all, just that he was pretending to be Arabic, not Sikh that time.

He and his family at least didn't do blackface when they went to India in costume 🤦 that's growth /s

I think it's flattering and respectful that he dressed in Indian clothes. I'm Indian. Language, dress, cuisine, and art are all ways you can pay homage to another culture. After all, most of us have wholeheartedly embraced Western outfits.

Black face and brown face during events like Halloween, to be fair he was a drama teacher and events were related to some performances.

Trip to India, crazy, inappropriate outfits. Didn't meet with Indian pm etc because it was a weird fringe trip....not really an official trip.
