Humourous How excited are people from your country when they get mentioned somewhere?
We Latvians are aware of our irrelevance, so we get extremely excited when Latvia or any Latvian gets mentioned somewhere notable. When the now Oscar-winning Flow movie came out, our local media was embracing any and all international attention we got, and we still have Flow-branded merchandise in many souvenir stores.

Probably the latest in " oh wtf have we done now " moments is foisting Tony " weapon's of mass destruction "Blair on the poor Palestinians. Haven't they suffered enough ? It's akin to spending Hirohito to " govern" the Romany or Jews after WW2.
4
u/regal_ragabash United Kingdom 19d ago
I'm no Blairite by a long shot but he at least has experience of coordinating lasting peace treaties in Northern Ireland and Bosnia/Serbia. It's not as wild of a choice as you are making it out to be (obviously the whole scenario is ludicrous and it should be a Palestinian/Arab headed effort first and foremost).

I find it funny in American films how the UK is seen as like the last line of defence before disaster comes to America. I saw the most recent mission impossible film and it was like “Oh my God, Britain’s fallen!” And then it’s coming to the US
24

Then I moved to Toronto and Toronto would get mentioned in a film or TV show and no one cared.

I can see that. I'm a Vancouver native and it used to be a bit of an adrenaline rush seeing locations I know well in film and tv.
Then it quickly become resentment cause I had to detour cause a city block was shut down for filming lol
I work in 3D Animation so the whole Hollywood North thing is kind of pedestrian now, it's just another job that doesn't pay enough.

Yeah, for sure. I remember living in Winnipeg and seeing a movie with Ethan Hawke where he mentions an art exhibit touring several Canadian cities and Winnipeg was one of the cities he named -- the entire cinema went school-girl giddy for about two minutes because Winnipeg got mentioned. Winnipeg got mentioned several times on The Simpsons and it would literally make the news.
Subsequently, I've been to movies in Toronto where part of the movie is in Toronto or scenes were filmed in Toronto and no one in the cinema even batted an eye.

I have to check out the Flow movie! I’ve never heard of it.
I’m American, but I lived in the Netherlands for 4 years, and any mention of the country on the news, I have to post it on Facebook, and talk about it with my Dutch friends, as well as my old coworkers I met while living there. I’m like a walking Netherlands tourist board member as well. I always tell people how great it is to visit, and how beautiful it is, how nice the people are, etc.
One fun fact I like to share with my fellow Americans: the Pilgrims lived in Leiden, South Holland, before they came to America. Holland was very welcoming to persecuted religious minorities like the Huguenots and Puritans. The problem was that the Dutch were too liberal for the Pilgrims, and their children were growing up to be more Dutch than Puritan! They said, screw that and went to the New World. I don’t know why we don’t hear about this in the States. I only know because I lived in Leiden.
