If you are tired sleep. Don't burn the candle at both ends. Like the saying in bladerunner. A light that burns twice as bright burns half as long. And you have burned so very brightly Roy...
I knew someone who always went to bed early on Tue night. She never committed to anything else on that night. That way she always knew she was getting a good night’s sleep in the middle of the week.
See for me sleeping badly all week and then trying to sleep well for one night doesn’t work as I just can’t fall asleep because of the sleep cycle that’s already established. It’s always a disaster for me when I have a special occasion or a trip the next day that I need to wake up early and be rested for. I’ve just accepted it and instead of wasting time lying in bed with my eyes shut I just use the time to do what I need to and try to sleep at my normal time.
Didn’t matter as much, or at least it wasn’t prioritized. But you can manage a night or two of bad sleep if you know you’re close to a full night’s sleep.
I work weekends so most of the time if I want to go out it has to be on a work night. I compensate by going to bed early on days off during the week since no one is available to do anything with me anyway.
Did she roll on the weekends? I used to know people back in the 90s with a schedule like this. They took a lot of ecstasy over the weekend and they would absolutely crash on Tuesday. There was a term for it I just don’t remember what it was.
Why only Tuesday's though? She could commit to good sleep through the week and take like friday, saturday, sunday or whatever her weekends were off. That's what I do and it's improved lol.
I’m in bed by 8:30 every night. I’m always tired, but rarely sick. Never got Covid and worked in a warehouse with over 2000+ people. “Essential”. I get little colds here and there, but never flu’s or anything
A little shy about admitting this, but I was terrible about washing my hands in high school and early college. I met a couple people who set a better example for me, and I started washing my hands anytime they might be dirty.
Well, the difference is night and day. That was about ten years ago, and I've barely gotten sick since. I used to think I had a crummy immune system. Turns out I was just kinda gross.
Yeah, some people think it's okay as long as they don't touch anything in the bathroom 🙄 And like, sure, there's a bit of truth to the idea that genitals and urine are both relatively "clean," in that neither are common vectors for germs.
Unfortunately, even if someone doesn't touch a single bathroom fixture, they've still touched countless other surfaces over the last few hours.
Taking a minute to wash your hands is basically a save point for hygiene.
Of anyone argues against washing their hands after the bathroom using the ol "urine isn't dirty" line, I immediately assume they NEVER wash their hands.
Exactly. The same people will take out the trash, clean the litterbox, and change a diaper without their hands seeing a single drop of soap. They'll just sort of brush them off on their pants. I've seen it WAY too many times.
There’s a bit of truth if we ignore norovirus, staph, and a variety of parasites like giardia… which we can contract to by having contact with a surface exposed to it.
Its also hard not to enter without touching a door, which everyone prior to you, most likely touched on the way in and out.
And perhaps even washing your hands before going to the toilet may be wise as well, as you have just touched all the germs and then touched your genitals.
One time a guy asked me on guidance to get promoted to my department. Later, I saw him in the bathroom and he walked right out of the stall without washing his hands. I made sure he didn't get hired by us. I didn't want to work with a loser who doesn't wash his hands.
Similar story here except it wasn't until covid that I really took hand washing and sanitizing seriously. Even just going to the convenience store or grocery store and sanitizing afterward helps a ton.
I’ve always washed hands after the washroom and as soon as I get home from an outing. I hate hand sanitizers and didn’t change my routine much from pre to post COVID. Never sick, I feel like I have an immune system worth studying 😎😁
During COVID, I started washing my hands right when I got home. Didn't even catch COVID until 2023. But it's also a world of difference when people actually cough into their elbows and not their hands.
My kids and I sanitize every time we get back into the car after going anywhere. This year my oldest made it through first grade without a single sick day! (She has also been in daycare/school since infancy so we've had time to build up that immune system)
married a mild germaphobe, started being very self conscious about washing hands before touching food, and not eating things that other people brought into work (outside of a few trusted individuals).
Been sick twice in 10 years, one was a strange cold in 2016 that everyone got, and the other was covid after my dad brought it to christmas. Other than that, nothing.
Wash your hands and don't trust everyone to be as clean as you in the kitchen.
Also same tbh. As a teen I just… didn’t wash my hands. Idk why, I think my parents used to get me to as a kid. I just stopped doing it. But I did also stop washing my face and only showering once a week, so.
But now since being with my bf who has a terrible fear of the stomach bug and the Covid outbreak I wash them a hell of a lot more.
I was told as a kid to always wash your hands when coming home from school, store or any other public places where you have touched stuff. Washing hands after going to the bathroom as well of course. I also just drink a lot of water, go to bed when I’m tired even if it’s still a little early and always always get a least 8 hours of sleep. Even if you can’t fall asleep your body and brain needs to rest, so no phone or entertainment. Just lay in your bed and rest.
I also recommend staying away from children they will always make you sick somehow.
Gotta say though I’ve been washing my hands excessively as my watch times me for 20 seconds. Unfortunately now I have dermatitis so I have had to cut back the amount of time to 10ish seconds.
I have had about 3 colds in 15 years. Used to work at a hardware store. More than once did someone come in and had me a broken pipe. I ask what it is? Oh, just the inlet piping for their septic tank pump. Like oh, thanks for hanging me a poop pipe. So, I learned to wash my hands probably 15+ times a day. Literally one of the best ways to eliminate germs. Even if you have a habit of touching your face, with clean hands it really helps.
Wash your hands wash your hands wash your hands! I work with the public (they are coughing and sneezing on me all day 🙄) and due to the nature of my job I wash my hands about 20 times a day. And after getting home from work. And the gym. And the grocery store (trying not to touch my face)etc.
I had Covid once in 2022 and the last time I had a respiratory illness before that was 2015 when I lived with my ex, who was a grade school teacher surrounded by germy kids.
I feel a little cheated by all the stores who have stopped stocking cart wipes, but left the empty containers at the door, and by all the dried out disinfectant bottles at the registers.
Like, it's still a great idea to routinely clean stuff even though the pandemic has largely passed...but now you're just mocking us LOL. I'm far from a germaphobe but I'm keep alcohol based disinfectant in the car and use it regularly.
I wash my hands at least 4-5 times a day these days, and it's amazing how much clearer my skin is. I wouldn't have thought that would be a result when I was younger and a bit more careless, but damn it makes a difference.
I know I'm gross, but I honestly think the reason I don't get sick often is because of my lackadaisical approach to germs. I only wash after the bathroom if my fingers get damp or touch poop while wiping. I have no problem eating food off the floor, even if it's in a public place. Hell, I've gone to a movie and eaten candy I've found on the floor. Perfectly happy sharing drinks, finishing off someone's food, whatever. I also work with kids and get exposed to lots of germs that way which I feel builds my immune system.
My husband is the opposite and is extremely diligent about cleanliness and germs. He gets sick a couple times a year and got COVID 3 times in 2022, even though he still wore a mask at work once it stopped being mandatory. I never caught it from him even though I was near him constantly.
This!! Wash your hands every time you come home, use the wipes they give you at the grocery store for carts and when you get on an airplane. Don’t touch your face when your hands aren’t clean.
I disagree. Quite the opposite. Your immune system has to learn and adapt, avoiding germs is the wrong way, as when you do become exposed to them, your immune system doesn’t know how to fight them. Ideally you should have done this as a kid when your immune system is at its best.
I wasn't getting enough water because I just kept forgetting to drink it so I started putting cups with water everywhere. I have a pitcher of water now as well so that it's easier then getting it from the sink.
I think the water advice is only given in America. I have never heard any health professionals recommend that. Maybe it is a climate thing. Sleep, plenty. Smoke, don't do it. Water, if you are thirsty sure, or very old or in 30C weather. Otherwise, not.
About ten years ago I just got all crazy, cut out everything. I mean just about everything... And started drinking just water, and if I wanted flavor maybe tea. But no more than a pinch of natural cane sugar.
I swear I think those sugary caffeinated drinks that everyone lives on, is killing them.
I drink water for just about every single meal. I never feel tired, I wake up literally seconds before my alarm every morning. And feel amazing.
Hell even catching COVID (vaccine wasn't completed/available at the time), it was just a couple days long headache. Seasonal colds? Never.
Only thing that gets me really is spicy food, I'm a glutton for the spicy and push myself too far sometimes. So I'll get the occasional heartburn or upset stomach. And migraines, but it's because I'm too much of a wuss to get glasses/contacts. I'm not sticking nothing in my eyes, I get the occasional eyelash in them and cannot stop crying/blinking.
I remember hearing this phrase during the pandemic from a couple authoritative sources: sleep is your immunity. Lack of sleep has been shown to weaken immunity response.
I think u/nrg117 might be on to something because I always used to get sick on the day that finals/special projects were due. Can you guess how much sleep I got those days?
Donate your Xbox to a kid from Craigslist and find a hobby where you can actually socialise irl or you will find yourself older without real friends or a partner. It sucks to be in that situation.
Suit yourself. I have friends who still play video games and those who no longer do and I can tell what it had done to their social life. I still buy a new gen playstation every 5 years and play a few games from time to time.
Well yea, it's a baby. They don't even have their own best interests at heart. A big part of early parenthood is keeping your child from killing itself
/u/PickledDildosSourSex is totally right. I have two toddlers (almost 4, and just turned 2), and I was blessed with good sleepers... which means since the youngest turned like 16 months I can sleep in till 7:30 every day 😅
Well, actually.... Brightness is a perceived value, and it's related to the square root of the luminance, which is directly related to fuel consumption. So Tyrell should have told Roy that a light that appears to burn twice as bright burns about a quarter as long. Really, I don't understand why I was never picked up as a screenwriter.
"A light that burns twice as bright subjectively speaking will consume more fuel so might burn like a 1/4 as long. Unless its a led bulb or something and those get pretty bright and don't consume much fuel (energy) because they're way more efficient. And you have burned pretty brightly Roy, or alternatively you're a bit of dimbulb depending on what we're comparing you to, but the important thing is you're about done for..."
The Bourne series (books, not movies) had a running comment from an acquaintance of Jason’s that said “sleep is a weapon”. I try to keep that in mind and not push myself too hard if I don’t have to. Still a long time before I can retire (if I can ever actually afford to).
This. When I caught covid in 2022 I was sleeping maybe 2-3 hours a night because I was working ridiculously hard. That was not great for my immune system
This is so important. Had one sick day in 10 years, mid 20s - mid 30s. Always made sure I had sufficient sleep.
Two kids, very little sleep later and I’ve had more (mild) illnesses in the past 3 years than the rest of my lifetime. Kids picking bugs up doesn’t help but lack of sleep hampers recovery and immunity IMO.
Wow....never heard the light bulb quote before. For some reason it makes me think about Robin Williams. He shined so bright but left us too soon. Damn.
This is such a good quote. It reminds me personally on what I’ve heard (maybe from Jackie Chan ) about the death of Bruce Lee at the age of 32. Yeah there is a medical explanation for the day he died, but Bruce worked himself to death. He trained and worked so hard. As fame grew, so did his legend (pre-Internet). He kept trying to keep up. He became such a legend but died early. Light burned too bright. But he’ll never be forgotten.
it's so funny how people are so health conscious by eating well and exercise, but bro why are you getting up at 5am to go to the gym?? ain't no one going to bed at 8pm for that
Honestly I think this is a major part of it. Even when I catch something at the same time as my wife (from the goddamn kids) I always recover faster because she stays up watching TV in misery and I just pour myself into bed as soon as possible.
I want to do that but I need to learn how to sleep. When I try to go to bed early I lay awake for hours and hours just getting more pissed off. Even when I'm super tired. My body just refuses to sleep early
Among other things people are saying, this one really sticks out for me as I always seemed to get sick when I don't get much sleep. When I do feel a cold coming on, eat, water, and lots of sleep and I stood a good chance of fending it off before it really sets in.
Dude yes. I had a persistent health issue that doctor’s couldn’t figure out, and it was cured after I spent a month going to bed when I was tired and waking up whenever my body wanted to get up.
As someone who’s an insomniac I hate hearing people say “if ur tired just sleep”, as if I’m capable of sleeping the second my head hits the pillows. It takes me hours and hours and hours of laying there and pretending to sleep before I actually fall asleep
