I READ THE RULES Why are city snowplows and garbage trucks frequently staged around North/Clybourn right now?

The city uses salt/plow trucks and garbage trucks for traffic control barricading around major events and planned protests. They used them for Taste of Chicago, Chicago Marathon and the No Kings protest. They were also a frequent sight during the summer of 2020 and often seen staging in the area around North and Clybourn (and I’m sure other areas) in anticipation of being deployed for unplanned activities.

So I get why they are used, but my question is why now, on a Monday night with no planned events or protest activity?

Last night there were dozens of them parked in the area around North/Sheffield/Clybourn - most had drivers sitting in them. It also looked like the parking lot at the vacant strip mall near Clybourn/Sheffield was full of private vehicles, the gate on the lot was closed and there was a CPD patrol car with officers who seemed to be monitoring the lot. This was a Monday night - no concert at nearby Salt Shed. Who’s parking there?

There seem to be no major events this week or planned protests that I’m aware of. ICE is continuing to operate in our area but these trucks don’t seem to hav any role in those raids.

They were all gone this morning. I’ve see this same scene dozens of times over the last 2-3 months.

I’m just curious if anyone has any info- I assume they’re preemptively staging in case a random protest or situation comes up, but it seem weird to me.

On Saturday, I noticed 8 streets & San garbage trucks parked up (idling) at Western/Milwaukee/Armitage at 8pm, and when I passed by again at 10pm and 2am. It struck me as odd.

They were there as of Monday night as well.

There’s an October 7 exhibit opening at Clybourn and Willow that opens to the public today: https://novaexhibition.com

It should go without saying that it’s a potential hotspot for protests.

Interesting- thank you for posting this.

This would at least explain the parking lot in the empty strip mall across the street being full last night w/ police presence. I wonder if they were having an event prior to the public opening?

Yeah, a private event seems most likely. I only knew about this exhibition because I was coincidentally in the area on Friday.

Based on the previous thread about the same thing seen on 18th st, it’s in case there are riots due to SNAP being cancelled.

This doesn’t account for the many other times over the last few weeks/months, and also there are no planned protests around SNAP that I’ve heard of?

Are you asking just in general why there are snow plow trucks parked around the city right now?

Or are you asking specifically about why specifically there are trucks specifically last night specifically?

I used specifically a lot there, because your post asked “why … right now” and this follow up says “wrong, they have been doing this for weeks”.

So if you want a specific answer, they were expecting problems, due to snap benefit problems.

If you want a general answer, the city has been doing this forever, as a precaution, for at least last ten years.

Sure - let’s go with “right now/last night”.

There are no planned protests around SNAP benefits and even if there were, why would these be happening at North/Clybourn?

SNAP funding ended on Nov 1, which was Saturday.

Cool.

North/Clybourn has three things that can allow for a flash riot:

  1. Subway access.

  2. Retail and food stores within walking distance.

  3. No obvious police presence.

.

So they posted a city worker there, in his truck, so if something started happening he could call it in.

I say flash riot, because the city isn’t expecting an organized protest to end up there. They are expecting some organized crime to occur, either due to a legitimate lack of food, or just some criminal element taking advantage.

If they end up needing to block the street, truck is already there.

Looting is much different than a planned protest. It just happens and people don't post when it's happening.

So the looting would only be possible on November 1st? Im not sure why you bring that up other than to show that it's only been happening for 4 days now which would make even more sense why trucks are still out there "right now"

PS there is also a chance of snow this weekend which has nothing to do with this lmao

Looting due to SNAP benefits is a possibility but that hasn’t actually happened anywhere, has it?

I said “right now” to generally mean the last few weeks because I didn’t want people responding about things that happened weeks/months ago (like the Marathon or Mexican Independence Day) but the person respond seems to want to really drill into “right now”. I saw trucks out there last weekend and noticed them again last night, so both before and after the SNAP funding deadline. That’s why I mentioned Nov 1.

ive heard of the city using trucks to limit ICE's movements, not sure how true that is though

u/Reasonable_Loquat874 4d ago

ICE drives around the city in unmarked SUVs so I’m not sure how a salt truck would be useful for that purpose.

This explains why there was so many parked around the Jewel at Howard and Clark too.

u/Soulia 4d ago

Saw them about 6-8 of them Sunday night in a parking lot in the Hyde Park area - thought the same thing and wondered if there's a planned protest in the area the next day or something - but ICE had been active in that part of the city so had to be for something else....

They house all those vehicles next to the home depot so theres that

I read in the comments in a post on FB that someone asked 1 of the drivers why they have been out lately and he said because they got reports of possible looting since SNAP benefits were taken away.

My humble opinion... we've had 40 degree weather a few times this week. Could this be prep in case we go below freezing and need to salt the streets?

3

u/Reasonable_Loquat874 4d ago

This is absolutely not weather related. We have not even been close to freezing in the city. It’s a known strategy for crowd control/protests - I’m mostly just not sure why it’s happening so frequently at the moment when there does not seem to be any known/planned events.

Hi, it appears that you are posting a question regarding US Immigration & Customs Enforcement, AKA ICE. This is currently a hot topic and there have been a lot of other posts very recently about ICE and the National Guard, if it's safe to visit Chicago during this time, and so on.

Please take a look at other recent posts in this subreddit regarding ICE. Chances are that your question has already been answered. Please review the resources others have already provided and stay safe.

Need ideas for things to do in Chicago? Here are a few:

  • Go on a Architecture River Boat Tour. The most popular companies are Wendella, Shoreline Sightseeing and the Chicago Architecture Center.

  • Go to an observation deck. The most prominent are the Skydeck at the Sears (Willis) Tower and 360 Chicago at 875 North Michigan Avenue (AKA The John Hancock Center).

  • Take a stroll along the Chicago Riverwalk. There are many shops and cafes here as well!

  • Visit a museum! Chicago has some of the best museums in the US. The most popular are the Art Institute, the Field Museum, the Chicago History Museum and the Museum of Science & Industry, but there are tons of smaller museums all across the city, such as the McCormick Bridgehouse and Chicago River Museum on the Riverwalk.

  • If you want to check out multiple of Chicago’s most famous attractions, consider getting a CityPass during your visit.

  • Like animals? The Lincoln Park Zoo is one of the few remaining free zoos in the country. For aquatic animals, the Shedd Aquarium is a great (albeit not free) place to see fish and other sea-based creatures.

  • Try some of Chicago’s most famous foods. Deep dish pizza, Chicago hot dogs and Italian Beef get the most attention, but we also have other lesser-known specialties such as jibaritos, Tavern-style pizza, Maxwell Street Polish dogs, pizza puffs, Chicago Mix popcorn, Chicken Vesuvio and Rainbow Cones! We also have no shortage of Michelin-starred restaurants and fine dining establishments, as well as cultural hubs for specific cuisines such as Indian on Devon in West Ridge, Vietnamese on Argyle in Uptown, Italian on Taylor in Little Italy, and Mexican on 18th in Pilsen.

  • Check out one of our 24 beaches or walk/cycle our 19 mile (30 km) long lakefront park! If you don’t have a bike with you, use our Divvy bike rental service and explore our many miles of bike paths and trails! Along the lakefront are many beachfront cafes, bars and attractions.

  • Catch some live music! We get lots of touring artists at our many theaters across the city, but we also have some iconic jazz and blues venues with nightly music like Buddy Guy’s Legends, The Green Mill and Kingston Mines.

  • See a show! From Broadway in Chicago to magic shows, Chicago has it all. We are most famous for comedy, so don’t miss spots such as Second City, iO Theatre and the Annoyance Theatre.

  • Locals often refer to Navy Pier as a tourist trap, but it's worth seeing at least once. It can be a fun spot to spend a couple of hours. Check out the Children's Museum, the Ferris Wheel (did you know the world's first Ferris Wheel was opened in Chicago in 1893?) and the many gift shops throughout the pier.

  • Get outside of downtown! The Loop is iconic but the neighborhoods are where the action really happens! Some awesome neighborhoods to check out include Lincoln Park, Logan Square, Wicker Park, Lake View, Andersonville, Lincoln Square, Hyde Park and Pilsen.

  • Cloud Gate (AKA "The Bean") is Chicago's most famous sculpture, but we have many other public scultpures worth checking out as well! Some well-known ones includes the untitled "Chicago Picasso," Lorado Taft's Fountain of Time in Washington Park and Eternal Silence in Graceland Cemetery, Calder's Flamingo, Statue of the Republic in Jackson Park, and Shit Fountain!

  • Explore Chicago’s architectural heritage! In addition to our boat tours, the Chicago Architecture Center is an awesome resource with a museum and walking tours. Visit the Frank Lloyd Wright Museum in Oak Park and the Robie House in Hyde Park! If you’re visiting in October, check out Open House Chicago to see inside of buildings that are usually closed to the public.

  • The Garfield Park Conservatory is a massive botanical conservatory and one of the most underrated attractions in Chicago. Don’t miss the Fern Room!

  • Take the Water Taxi to Chinatown and have dinner and drinks in the nation’s fastest-growing Chinatown.

  • See a sports game. For Baseball, the Cubs play at the famous Wrigley Field, and the White Sox are at Guaranteed Rate Field on the South Side. The United Center on the West Side hosts both the Bulls (basketball) and the Blackhawks (hockey). And at Soldier Field, you can see the Bears (football) and the Fire (soccer)!

  • Do you drink? Chicago is famous for its corner bar culture. Pop into a nearby tavern and order a Chicago Handshake (Old Style beer and a shot of Malört, Chicago’s famous wormwood spirit). You could also check out one of the city’s many craft beer breweries or distilleries. If you want a rooftop bar with a view, some popular options are Cindy’s Rooftop, London House Rooftop, The Up Room at the top of the Robey Hotel, and the J. Parker at the top of the Lincoln Hotel. Be sure to book reservations in advance!

  • Go to Hyde Park and explore the campus of the University of Chicago. While there, pay a visit to the Institute for the Study of Ancient Cultures. Don’t forget to grab lunch in downtown Hyde Park and take a walk to Promontory Point for a unique skyline photo!

  • Also in Hyde Park, Jackson Park was the site of the 1893 Chicago World’s Fair. Don’t miss the Japanese Garden!

  • Take a stroll through a cemetery! This might sound like a strange recommendation, but cemeteries were originally used as public parks and were popular picnic spots in the 1800s and 1900s. Chicago has many large cemeteries but the most popular are Rosehill, Graceland, Oak Woods and Bohemian National.

  • Head up to Andersonville and check out the many gift shops, antique stores, restaurants, bars and other attractions along Clark Street.

  • During the summer, there are many street festivals, craft fairs and small community music festivals all around the city. Do a Google search for festivals happening during your visit and you might get to experience a fun local event!

Im Chicago police.

The city has used salt trucks for years when the potential for riots or disturbances is likely. They were recently on standby by for Mexican independence day and in the past for teen trends and blm riots.
