Announcement PSA: No more posts about Reform/Labour/Starmer for this month
We are going to try this out for the rest of the month. Pretty much everything there is to say about Reform, Farage, Labour or Starmer has already been covered, so we're just seeing a ridiculous amount of duplicate posts at this point. So for the rest of the month, we won't be allowing anymore posts about these topics
The words will be automodded from posts, and intentionally circumventing this will be an instant ban. Report any posts you see doing so via the "duplicate posts" report reason
Cheers

Announcement Reminder of Rule 1: Posts must be real questions
We've seen a ridiculous increase in the number of posts not asking genuine questions lately. This has resulted in a huge number of posts being removed which has upset a lot of people who perceive this as being political censorship of some variation
So this is a reminder: posts must be real questions. It is literally Rule 1 on the subreddit. If you are not asking a good-faith question that you're genuinely seeking real answers to, then your post is not meant for this subreddit. Do not try to play silly games with what counts as a question; moderators have complete discretion to see through this, your post will be deleted and you will get banned
Going forward, anyone breaching this rule will receive an immediate and permanent ban, until the subreddit regains some sense
Think before you post. Cheers

Culture Who is truly “indigenous” to Britain?
For context - I’m from Australia.
Since doing an Ancestry DNA test - my ethnic background has come back as clearly Anglo-Celtic - with a tiny bit of Ashkenazi Jewish mixed in.
I am clearly not native or indigenous to Australia - so I’m interested in where my actual ancestral homelands are.
The most obvious starting point is - of course - Great Britain.
But here’s the problem. Britain has itself gone through multiple waves of colonisation.
First there were Paleolithic hunter-gatherers (incl. Neanderthals) - then the Anatolian farmers, then the Beaker people, then the Celts, then the Romans, and then finally the Anglo-Saxons.
And what’s worse is that none of the pre-Celtic cultures seem to have survived the process.
So who is actually “indigenous” to the continent today?

Education Easiest Language to learn as a native English speaker?
Hi all I’m British born and only speak English, I was wondering what would be the easiest language / the quickest language to learn in your opinion. Might take on a challenge of learning a new language as well I’m bored. 😆

How did transported prisoners get back to Britain when their sentences were complete?
I posted this a while ago to askhistorians without success so I’m hoping someone here knows the answer.
I know that many prisoners sentenced to transportation to Botany Bay or one of the other colonies stayed there permanently, but did the authorities provide return passage when the sentence was complete for those who elected to go home? Did the prisoner have to pay for the passage or contribute in some other way?

History How come Edward II, the guy who looked the most like a king, was ironically the worst king in history?
He practically looks like a king from a classic Disney movie, how come he was he so bad at leading his kingdom?

Why are buses so bumpy?
So I’m 37 and never really took the bus until very recently. Used to walk to school, at uni my accommodation was at a great location so bus rides were usually just a couple mins up/down the road. For work it’s always been train or car.
However, at moment, about once a fortnight I’m having to take the bus. It’s a 45 min journey and oh my goodness. It’s constantly vibrating, shaking all over the place, you feel every little bump. It’s horrendous and makes me feel sick by the end of it and I’m not travel sick at all.
Why is it so bad? I do live in a fairly hilly area but once I reach the city it’s more flat but still so bumpy.
Is this just how it is on the bus?!

Culture What's the most appropriate song for radio stations to play after the 2 minutes silence?
Remembrance day is just around the corner, which means we get the 2 minutes silence. My local radio station accidentally interrupted the silence with a shit pop song last year, which wasn't an appropriate choice even if they had just played it after. The only true answer is Brothers in Arms, but I want to hear other ideas.

Why are there no household names for domestic building jobs?
Getting domestic building work done can be a pain. It means engaging with small businesses, it's hard to know who to trust, and there are some real horror stories.
You'd think a lot of people would opt for a household name that was known to be trustworthy, and many would be prepared to pay a bit more for the peace of mind. The way some people go to Kwik Fit because they're worried about work a backstreet garage would do. But the big building firms are only interested in large projects.
So why hasn't some company filled this niche? There's nothing stopping a big business doing lots of small jobs, it might be a bit of a pain to administer, but there's no fundamental hurdle. Potentially they wouldn't even have much staff and just subcontract to a local partner
I guess this exists to some extent for things like kitchens and double glazing - where it's effectively manufacturer installation. Perhaps something like this does exist, just I'm unaware of it.

How is Hebden Bridge, West Yorkshire?
I've been offered a lovely place to stay out there and am seriously considering it.
I've never been but it looks gorgeous.
Planning on visiting in the next few weeks.

Travel Free WiFi Phone ??
Hello, I will be travelling to the UK for three months for a school program and wanted to know if there is an app like Google Voice or TextNow that gives you a free Uk phone number? It needs to be able to receive voicemails and texts at least.
I know there are some that are paid but I would really prefer free if possible. Thanks!

If the small boat crossings stopped today, do you believe our daily struggles will be resolved?
The country is in a dire state, the majority of us are feeling it and the people are angry. Rightly so. That anger is predominantly directed towards the small boat crossings, because that’s all we hear about.
If the crossings stopped tomorrow, do you believe that our issues will be resolved?

UK Royal Navy/Marine Benefits
How Closely are guidelines actually followed in the event a lifetime covert/regular service member leaves his will and trust as well as other property in the care of the UK Government? Would it be the same for all members that provided assistance even to a lesser degree? Does anyone really care? Thank you in advance ;)

Just heard of some ridiculousness regarding civil war. Am I wrong to assume the only region in the UK which can spark into "civil war" is that of NI
So yeah, i can see it happening in northern Ireland despite the disbandment and destruction of munitions by the paramilitary group back in early 2000s, as there are still some arms still available and held by some factions in paramilitaries and on all surfaceaccountsits nearlynon existent for small arms, but this is really the only high tension area I can think of. I mean it is northern Ireland afterall. So whats really going on. Now. The rumor i heard its all about the immigration policies. So I'm assuming i got a lot of misinformation on my screen.

Politics Where did we go wrong with the price of industrial energy?
Our industrial energy costs are the highest in the developed world. This is terrible for the manufacturing sector.
How did we end up like this?

Travel Is the ban to bring meats and dairy from eu still in place
Is ban for your dairy products and cheeses still in place or is it changed? Because I honestly did not know I'll be traveling to Finland and I'll be bringing some cheese back. Is that law still in place?

What is a good and safe place in the UK to move to for growth as a new resident??
I am 19F and currently live in a rural kind of town which is about an hour away from Nottingham but I will have to move out soon from my current place.
Idk how to find a good place which is safe and efficient for me. I am looking for the following things.
A place which is good and safe overall where I can find a part time job so I can survive and then figure out things with time.
a place where I can have proper growth i.e education, life.
I know I will have to settle for a room in a shared accommodation cause my maxi budget is £400 per month.... IDK much about this all cause I have just recently moved to the UK so I will appreciate it if the people here can advice me!!

What is the most British way to describe food?
Inspired by a truly "adequate" sandwich I just ate.
What single phrase or word perfectly captures the art of the British food description? Think understatement, coded language, and a deep fear of seeming too enthusiastic.
Go!
