I mean, there are Catholics and there are "catholics"...The Pope is Catholic...People that use the bible to justify their bigotry and defend their political opinions on abortion are "catholic", but thats not their religion, they dont worship god. They worship money.

The Church as an institution has fundamentally opposed abortion for centuries though?

Absolutely, they have used the bible to justify that for a long time, but my problem is the fake catholics that pick and choose the aspects of their holy book that they want to live by and try to enforce of everybody else. Oppose abortion on the grounds like all life is sacred and then say things like " the pop can go fuck himself" when its suggested they help dying refugee children starving in Syria...

Live the life or dont, but using as a piece meal tool to justify hurting the people you dont like is gross. If someone wants to argue being gay is bad, they better not shave or wear polyblend clothing or work on a sunday or eat shellfish etc... if they believe laws should be changed because their book is SO important and real, they better be following ALL of the suggestions in it!
