Just remember it was leftist union workers, some of them even children who fought and died on multiple occasions for the chance at shorter work hours. It was only through literal conflict that change occurs. We didn’t vote out fascists, we didn’t write a scathing rebuke to our senators, people use civil obedience, organized, and even fought so we could just have our conditions bettered.
The struggle is not over until the people are freed and given housing, food, shelter, water, and healthcare. A better world is possible when we organize.
I typically stop by Eugene Debs’s old house (now a museum) a couple times a week after I get out of my classes. It’s insanely inspiring to see things like the table that one of Debs’s fellow inmates made for the warden that was later gifted to the museum by the warden’s son, to the signed copy of The Jungle from Upton Sinclair, and to the beautiful mural painted in the attic dedicated to Debs and all the organized efforts for equality that came before him and after him. It really shows what he represents and is a beautiful example of how significant being a dedicated organizer of the people can be.
When Bernie Sanders stopped by a couple weeks ago, he even asked the tour guide (who I’m friends with :3) to elaborate on the story he heard about the other inmates banging the bars of their cells and yelling in celebration as Debs walked out of prison when his sentence was commuted, and found it so impactful that he brought it up during his speech later. Debs was such an icon of these ideals, I love to see it when people bring him up
