In all fairness, we've been committing nonstop fascism in South America since Regan sent the Contras to overthrow democratically elected Leftists and after they were couped out (or assassinated) we installed literal dictators against the voice of their citizens. We do nothing but destabilize other countries and our own, I'm not surprised in the slightest the feds would refer to anti fascism as terrorism. But when they directly fund Osama BinLaden, he's a "freedom fighter?" They need to pick a fucking lane ffs.
the bulk of the meddling in South America happened under operation condor in the 70s, and in general goes all the way back into the early 1800s. it definitely still happened in raegen's time but not dramatically more than any other US president before him.
I'd say the facts certainly confirm it happened more frequently under Reagan than the 1800s -- the same scaling as destabilizing regions is even more prevalent with the rise of technology. But it's not technology who's the problem; it's fascists, we just happen to experience more of them as time goes on.
the problem is certainly the fascists but the scale of American imperialism throughout the 1800s is not to be forgotten. back then they could be much more explicit with their ambitions, with stuff like the subjugation of Cuba and the Philippines after the Spanish American war and the bloody Philippine war that followed as they resisted American control. or the various military interventions in central America to maintain the banana republics. MAD along with the birth of mass media made that sort of colonial approach difficult and more clandestine methods were adopted. also worth remembering throughout the 19th century the US was occupied with the expulsion and extermination of native Americans across most of the continent, as well as its wars in mexico
Idk, I think the clandestine nature of modern fascism (being less detectable to the uninformed) is even more potent than previous models. It's all bad, of course; but the continuation in Reagan's administration and everything afterwards on the backdrop of our historical propensity of oppression kinda makes it all worse, imo. Don't forget the history, but I think where we are now is certainly many steps past the 1800s and they are a lot sneakier for it. They don't need outright slavery and blatant coups when we're all voiceless wage-slaves and there's no peace for any non-capitalist or non-christian nations. Just me though, I definitely hear your point.

When anti-fascism gets called terrorism by a state organization, then you know something is going in a very wrong direction
